On January 20, 2012, R.C. Sproul was joined by Ligonier Teaching Fellow Sinclair Ferguson to answer questions submitted by online viewers and those present at Saint Andrew's. During this relaxed and informative evening, these two notable theologians and pastors addressed topics such as the doctrines of grace, when to leave a local church, Tim Tebow, dispensationalism, free will, and the peccability or impeccability of Jesus.

Five years ago our pastor in Glasgow, Scotland asked the congregation which preacher had influenced them most and a lady said “RC Sproul.” I had never heard of RC Sproul and when I asked her who he was she set me right and I have been mightily impressed ever since….when I heard RC referring to Dr Sinclair Ferguson as the greatest reformed theology teacher I was utterly amazed at such praise…..I first met Sinclair over 60 years ago when he was a teenager living in Roslea Drive in Dennistoun in the east end of Glasgow….he attended what was then Rutherford Church of Scotland round the corner and Whitehill Secondary School close by….so from such humble beginnings Sinclair has come a very long way and is one of several godly men who originated from Scotland….John McArthur, Alistair Begg, RC Sproul and Sinclair himself…..

We have had a beautiful family in our church. The wife says it was her husband’s great devotion to God which drew her to him. He is from Ghana and is on the worship team of Union Church of San Salvador. She has been loyally serving in Christian education and their three children were so well behaved even when, during the plandemic, there was no Sunday School.

God has led me slowly and gently into the understanding of pre-destination. I couldn’t have understood apart from the Holy Spirit explaining this via scripture. Knowing the path He took me, I rarely try to convince anyone else because I understand why they believe what they do, so i share a little and pray a lot.

I personally am a Molinist with several Calvinistic leanings. You're 100% right. Whether we are actually given true Libertarian Free Will or we simply have Compatabilist Free Will we need to preach as though people are free to choose but understand that God will do the drawing. After all the last words before Jesus ascended was to preach the Gospel to every creature. If we do that then we will stand in front of our Lord and hear well done.

To all who watch this wonderful session of edification... It is of utmost importance to observe the gentleman at 30:00 and to always examine oneself in the light of such a demeanor because the cracks that are showing themselves in the gentleman's spirit is the anti-gospel... which is to say that of a "hyper-calvinism"-which is precisely what has festered in the cracks of the the Reformed Homeland... where it has even gone so far as people never taking communion because of fear that they have some remaining hidden condition that would curse them nor do they share the Gospel for fear of false conversion. This gentleman might not be of such a hue, but I wonder if it would startle him to see himself as it were, in a type of mirror. I would suggest that this is an instant of the Holy Spirit reflecting or projecting what we all should fear in the tendency of the hardened heart ...which is the reservation of freely proclaiming Christ's atonement that is is not hypothetical -but should be proclaimed HYPOTHETICALLY since not doing so is actually Gospel abortion. This man had ruminated over this and premeditated this ambush... that, thanks to the Holy Spirit, was foiled. Ferguson is the consummate disciple and "overseer". May we never have any more of a role than what we've already had (prior to conversion) in quenching the Spirit. Indeed, such self-asserting imposition upon the Gospel proclamation would be, quite justifiably, an inverted proportionality in irony of a poetic sort- in that... such intentional insubordination (the gentleman)... would be self-imposing an ontological usurpation - and therefore self-fulfilling - inversion of the Creator-creature distinction... thus projecting his own reprobation by his own assertion. A chilling warning indeed! Soli Deo Gloria!

@@elsaberhe9704 the dude accusing ferguson with a poorly disguised question is obviously in much deeper error than he was claiming ferguson and piper to have in his 'question'. in other words, he's being very hypocritical. not only that, but very ignorant, and frighteningly so. essentially he's making Calvinism his religion and ignoring what the Gospel actually is. the author of the comment you asked to be summarized is saying he doubts the guy who asked the question is saved and is saying we should see what he did as a warning.

Dr. Sproul wrote the forward to the best book on Dispensationalism by Dr. John Gertsner, "Wrongly Dividing the Word of Truth". It is clearly the best handling of Dispensationalism. Dr. Gertsner makes it clear that Dispensationalism is certainly unbiblical. Great to hear Dr. Sproul refer to it as heresy. That is Dr. Gertsner's conclusion.

@Tomas You are not interested, if you are, buy the book. This is not the place to discuss it. The entire system is based on a system fabricated in the brain of J.N.Darby in 1830. It was popularized by the Schofield Reference Bible and has unfortunately become the majority report. If you are interested buy the book or if you want KZbin videos, there are many. Gary Demar, Kenneth Gentry, to suggest a few.

These are my favorites theologians. I was born in 1946, raised Presbyterian and graduated from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) but my parents, who both taught Sunday school, never stressed “predestination” even though I know now there is Biblical basis for it. As an elderly retired teacher, I would suggest it might not be a doctrine for children or even youth. I think the chosen will not be the ones we, even the most wise, might choose.
@prayertogo7569

I once heard this illustration and it made so much sense to me... The doctrine of predestination is like the bright lights of a car driving through a moonless black night: it will blind all outsiders who look into this doctrine from a 'outside of Christ position'.... But for those in the car ( those who are safe in Christ) it gives them much light on their path...We do not preach predestination to our children but Christ! But when they believe we can assure them that they were chosen from eternity past!

Pre destination is the only way any man can be accepted redeemed or justified by the creator God behind the veil. It is so simple and so undeniable to anyone who has faced HIMSELF and his own totally depraved inner man that it is obvious all other still cling to Satan's lie from the garden that we can be or are self righteous. It's just the ridiculous Mickey mouse Disney world revivalist easy believism cult in America that has made false zombies of most church goers.

I enjoy the clarity in his question and the challenging spirit without being overly insulting. @@marukchozt6744 when he said 'i don't think anyone here has ever heard of john preston', i don't think he was being sarcastic. maybe he was. maybe the congregation is very familiar and it was sarcasm. if it was not sarcasm, that was remarkably arrogant. some people are not as natural with being 'nice' as others. some people are more 'stoic' to a point. maybe he was. maybe he has some bit of 'social awkwardness'. i hold nothing against that as i am very similar. however, when he said what he did about preston, as long as it was not sarcasm, he was unnecessarily elevating himself. why do i rant about this? because you claim his question, which was mostly an accusation, and entirely in a degrading manner, was in good spirit. i don't think so.

@@bjornegan6421 See, you misinterpreted just about everything I said about him. I said "apparent awkwardness" to refer to the situation which he brought, not "social awkwardness" which would then refer to who he is as a person. I said "good scholarly spirit" here to mean that the spirit which leads to results that would manifest in a scholarly discussion, in which case the question must be phrased according to the questioner's mind and yet, can be clearly heard. I said nothing about his "good spirit" here for I do not know his intentions whatsoever. The reason why you run into so many "maybe"s in your writing is because you're trying to guess what he's coming from much beyond what we can see in the video, as well as mine. Simply put, as far as I'm concerned, the only reason I enjoyed it was because it had loads of information that made sense whether you'd read it as an accusation or a question.

THe point that Dr. Fergus made about everyone believing in some regard in the limited atonement to me spells out perfectly why this is an issue I simply refuse to argue about with people. If you are within the bounds of Orthodox Christian thinking, and you believe therefor that some will go to heaven and others will go to hell, then you DO, in some way or another, believe in "limited atonement". Having lengthy debates about whether Jesus died for all but some refused the gift or Jesus died only for the elect is rather irrelevant on this singular issue because the product is still the same: some will receive imputed righteousness and some will not. So while I enjoy a robust debate on other 5 points of Tulip, this one is a snoozer to me. ;)

The bottom line is that God knows exactly who his sacrifice was for. As Christians we should be sharing tge Gospel with anyone who will listen, and that is "Christ crucified." Really Enjoyed. I wasn't very familiar w Ferguson and was Blessed. The characterization of Evangelicals is unlike I ever experienced in reguard to Dispensatinalism. The one pastor that taught it who's church I went to. I just accept with humility some of Evangelical teaching and calvinist teaching. Almost seem like each side puts on blinders a bit when looking at the other. When Spoul who I've listened to a lot, speaks of L in TULIP, from my Bible I can't at this point agree with how Sproul teaches it. It is ashame to see the astounding turning away in America from Biblical Truth. The incorporating of squishy and liberal ideas have captured many. (Anyone remenber White Horse Inn?) Dr Sproul is still using the most absurd examples of lost and uneducated Christian's absurdities he has heard. That us disengenuine to Truth.

@55:45, I want to understand how to juxtapose the understanding R C (which I presume ) is taking is from [Romans 3:10-11 There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God] when compared to [Genesis 4:26(At that time people began to call upon the name of the LORD.] or Noah [Genesis 6:8 But Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord.] How did Noah do what is right if no one is righteous or how did the people call on the name of the LORD if no one seeks God?
@BogeyCDogRosey
@BogeyCDogRosey 3 жыл бұрын
The understanding is that even righteous men have no ground upon which to boast before God. There’s no possibility that our righteousness could ever put God in debt. Therefore righteous men like Noah, Job, Enoch, Mary, etc can only be called righteous because God has purposed you place His favor on them.

Raymond Blanton thank you for the reply. I get what you are saying but when we read Genesis 6 where it says .. 5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created-and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground-for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. Did the Lord enabled or predestined Noah to be righteous ? Cause when I read it’s hard to come to a conclusion on what you are saying. I am trying to understand the doctrine of predestination and this is where I’m at.

I’m not actually defending the Calvinist position. I just understand what it is. I believe, rather than that God predetermined the good and the bad, that all humanity is fallen in sin, and God for His glory and our good chooses to save some. He gives grace to some and Justice to others, but God never CAUSES wickedness in humanity.
@BogeyCDogRosey
@BogeyCDogRosey 3 жыл бұрын
The Calvinists will say, “We don’t believe God causes wickedness either,” but the doctrine of reprobation teaches that God causes salvation and damnation therefore God, of absolute necessity by logic, must also cause the wickedness of the reprobate from which they cannot escape.

There are pastors who call themselves “Reformed” who preach and teach in Spanish, Leslie, but I so wish I could, in my old age, help translate the very words of these two giants in the faith. Artificial intelligence could never do them justice. I suggest you try to find translations of their books into Spanish and ask that there again be Spanish subtitles, which I rarely see these days.

What is your comments on churches that have a lot of liturgy (which i am mostly ok with) 1.parachuting their political views. 2. make statements like we should not be judging a man who is in his bed either male or female. 3. where we apologize to the previous occupiers of the land for being on their land.

As I'm listening to the brilliant RC scroll, I just had a thought how to explain the carnal Christian. It would be like hiring someone to come and convert your water heater from propane gas to Natural Gas. He does the work tells you it's all converted but and still Burns propane, it's converted but there's no change keep doing what you were doing, LOL.

The concept of predestination is not that hard to understand if you realize that God exists in our past, present and future always since the moment decided to create humanity. For God in his existence it is always the present. Time is for us humans not for God so from God's perspective he is always choosing his elect. From our perspective he chose them in time, from the past but for God that past is, from our perspective a time gone by. GOD exists in our past present and future but for God they are one and the same.

When we were still sinners Christ died for us. Our sin was judged long before we even thought of God. If the sin of all has not been atoned for then the Cosmos is still unclean. You need to read PT Forsyth's 'The cruciality of the Cross'. Christ's sacrifice was first to God the Father before He dealt with our sins. We can only respond to what Christ has done if He has done it all.

Try to share your belief of the true gospel while listening to your father’s view. The Holy Spirit is the teacher. We just echo what He has taught us thru the ages. There might be a meeting of the minds but the Gospel can not and should not change to meet man’s views, expectations and opinions.

When they talk about Wisdom personified, in Proverbs, they do not mention it being personified as a woman, as it is in English, with "she"? My understanding it is is personified but in the Hebrew the nouns gender does not necessarily reflect in the actual speaking (i.e. Wisdom is gendered as feminine in Hebrew, we don't have that in English as far as I know). So it isn't quite correct then in my class recently where the text stated wisdom was personified as a woman?

What a great comment in it's depth... This is a particular instance of the range of divine attribution in the areas of wisdom in understanding, and those ranges are particularly attributed to feminine characteristics in the human division of unity (male/female). Christ's attributes have a "feminine" character of acceptance- which is not of a gender implication but rather of compassion (even the word "acceptance" can be tricky in it's semantic range) The Father has no compassion -only passion for the Son (which attests to God's impassibility to anything else), and if it were not for the tri-unity of God, there would be no Redemption... which is why there is none in Allah. I'm so glad you brought this up! it just goes to show that it takes Ligonier to have such discussion in the comments of a video. God bless

Say, if I were one of those who will die and go to hell. Can it be said? When alive I had no Savior to call upon. The problem is, if you believe this you might want to remove a couple of verses from Gods word. I will start writing from Johns gospel chapter 3 verse 14 “ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.” If it is true , God only Made Christ to die only for the elect, with the dead having no sacrifice for sin to lay hold of. Then, the next verse is a contradiction. “He that believeth on him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John ch 3v18 You can’t believe in something that wasn’t there for you to believe. And also in 1Tim ch4v10 we read “For, therefore, we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those that believe.” Now it’s clear that Chris is the Savior of all men but especially to the group out of this all, that believe. The gospel message that the apostle Paul preached is written down in 1 Corinthians ch 15 vs 3+4 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures…” If God made no provision for the lost, then it would not have been written in the scriptures that he is the Savior of all men especially of those that believe. Let me take you back to the book of Genesis, to the time God judged and condemned the old world; saving only eight souls, Noah and his family. Genesis 6 vs 5-7 “ and God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the Earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repented me that I have made them.” These we’re not left without a witness. This same chapter in Genesis we read in verse 3, the Lord saying, “ and the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: Yet his days Shall be an hundred and twenty years.” A passage in 1 Peter is helpful chapter 3 v18 “For Christ also have once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, by whom also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison. Who at one time were disobedient, when once the long suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing, in which few that is eight souls, were saved by water.” It was by the Spirit Christ went and preached. For some people it is needed to finish this passage with the next verse. verse 21 “The like figure unto which even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God),by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” The saving of water and baptism are only figures, that are like figures. Noah is mentioned in 2 Peter ch 2 v 5 that he was a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. So then while the ark was in preparing, the Spirit of God was preaching through Noah. Moving, working on, striving with man. The people in Noah’s day were not left to die without hope. The hope for salvation came from the preaching and striving by God, while the ark was being prepared. Think about this, though, God was at work striving with the people, (remember he said in verse 3 of Genesis ch 6, My Spirit will not always strive with man)not one of them repented and came into the ark for salvation. One thing is for sure, God has not elected people to be dammed. He would not have preached through Noah striving and moving in them by the Holy Spirit. The truth is that they were not willing to turn from their wicked way. “ And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil. For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.” John ch 3vs 19-20 God offers Salvation to all but actually needs to call out a people for his name. Now, can you see the necessity of John chapter 6 vs 37 and 44 also 65 37 “All that the father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” 44 “No man can come to me, except the Father, who have sent me, draw him; and I will raise him up at the last day.” 65 “And he said, therefore said I unto you that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.” “Behold what manner of love the father hath bestowed upon us…” John 3 v 1 Chris Barry

Believing is not enough, my dear friend. There must be a change of heart. I mean, anyone can say “I believe” but not everyone wants to obey. Luke 6:46-49 [46] "But why do you call *Me 'Lord, Lord,'* and not do the things which *I* say? [47] Whoever comes to *Me,* and hears *My* sayings and does them, *I* will show you whom he is like: [48] *He* is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. [49] But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great."

Interesting that there are no Bibles present and not much mention of Biblical text. Also ,if one takes Scripture consistently literally grammatically and historically correct, then one would have to pretend that about one third of the text doesn’t exist, the prophetic text. Don’t take my word for it, or anyone else. The best authority is the whole word of God. Don’t be fooled.

Hey I understand what your saying. It frustrates me when you don’t see a sensitivity and compassion like you’d expect. I guess that’s why we are all body’s of Christ for the church. Where some lack others gain. Doesn’t make it right. Sometimes these old timers get stuck on the “doctrine” and scholarly talk instead of coming from a place where Jesus would. Not saying at all that doctrine isn’t important. But sometimes a bible answer isn’t what’s needed.
