I just discovered your channel, I have always had beef and hogs but have a big soft spot for Jerseys after I found the book The Jerseys of Merridale Farms in a small museum in Delaware county NY. They had a thousand cow dairy in the later 1800s to roughly ww2 time frame. Some of their original herd came from the uncle of the Red Baron when he was called home to Germany. They imported many cattle from the Island of Jersey and had a tremendous influence in the breed here as well as having huge production sales at the farm.

Great looking calves. For your water troughs in your new shed may I suggest running the water line to the front and putting the trough in the front so if calves make it overflow the mess is in the front and the back of the shed will stay dryer longer. We moved all ours to the front for this season and the sheds stay a lot dryer

Haha I thought kiwi was easy to understand, but I do talk to fast, definitely guilty of that. Our climates a lot milder which enables us to graze out side all year 👍

Hi Andrew hunting and fishing do cage traps for around $70 is spring loaded with a plate they walk on to set door off and I just use peanut butter as bait . If you are see possums around means numbers are high . I use pallet 🔫 to dispatch them

My family kept jersey cows before I made a transition to Water buffaloes, but I had 1 single jersey cow left and she looked so frail and skinny compared to my buffaloes, but the 14 member strong herd of buffaloes avoided her like plague and she followed them like the FBI.

Your cows are looking good Andrew I'm surprised you and your dad don't start milking at 8 or 9 am in the morning instead of 5 or don't you want to milk that late I figured you would want to sleep in seeing you only milk once a day

I mixed the optiguard in with the meal this season, I found it encouraged the calves to eat the meal because they love the taste of optiguard.

Amazed that that colostrum milk can last for 7 weeks without being chilled is it because you add fresh milk each day seems amazing to me thanks

It’ll last that long as long as you don’t have penicillin , mastitis or blood milk in it .

Hello Andrew calves look great. Do you need refrigeration for the milk for the calves? Maybe a larger trap so it has to go inside cant reach in. Good video have a great day.

Hey Andrew how many cows did your Grandparents milk in the old walk thru cowshed. Also with the records of the sires on paper actually turn out to have good offspring . Do you audit those figures? Cheers thanks for the video

A couple questions Andrew. Do you think possibly some mastitis come from changing from milking twice a day to once a day of the fresh cows? And is the once a day milking common there? Your calf crop looks wonderful. You are the first one I have ever heard of once a day. We have some that will milk 3 and 4 times here in the USA. You will have to let us know how you prepare your opossum after you catch them. Stew or baked. lol

Jersey calves look dainty and fragile compared to buffalo calves, but they are equally cute. I often carried new born jersey from the spot they were born into the barn, but buffalo calves are much heavier.

Yeah it does go a bit yogurty for sure and mix it in with the fresh milk. I slowly add it into the diet as to not upset there stomachs 👍

Get yourself a Tim’s trap, sprinkle some cinnamon on half an apple and set the trap. No issues with despatch either, it’s all done for you.

Some of the wire traps' doors are seldom closed enough to lock with a large possum because the tail is too large. DOC website list of tested traps - National animal welfare advisory committee. "NAWAC trap guideline test status - updated 14 June 2022"
