As an American trying to get into soccer after the World Cup has just ended, this is exactly what I was looking for. It's very confusing with the different clubs playing outside of their own respective leagues. I'm starting to wrap my head around this now!

@@totallybored5526 The "World Series" is just a name and the international players of that caliber tend to make it to the MLB anyways. Teams moving to another city is upsetting but it doesn't happen very often. The playoffs in any American sport are really what make that time of year exciting. The regular season is simply a long period of time that determines playoff eligibility and matchups (bracket). Makes it way more exciting as a team that barely makes the playoff still has a chance to beat the team with the best record. You could compare this (while not as impressive but happens more often probably) to a no name club working their way up the leagues only they have a way better chance. Using the World Cup as a comparison: You could imagine that the regular season is qualifying matches and the playoffs are the round of 16 and onward. Obviously it's only a national scale and it happens every year instead of every 4

Personally for me the complex rules and higher scoring of American Football really make it more exciting. There's so much more game plan, coaching, and variables that make the game so exciting. Not saying futbol is not exciting but American Football has so much more depth

@@JamesCM86 That definitely has to do with it. I think if I really got into soccer more and began to have a deeper understanding of the rules I'd appreciate it more. I agree there's definitely more to soccer that I'm not seeing yet, however I still don't think it comes close in complexity to American Football. One of the similarities I picked up on was clock management. I noticed in the WC teams that were ahead would take their time getting the ball. I think I even saw somebody launch it into the stands (not sure how thats not illegal). All of this to try and waste what's left of the game time. In American football it's pretty similar. You have to run the bull instead of throw because the clock will continue to run if you're tackled within the boundaries. This forces the other team to use up their timeouts. What are other complexities of soccer I need to learn/look out for?

Do you really? When Americans say Hockey, they mean Ice Hockey, not the Hockey that's way more popular in Asia, Australia, South America etc. Baseball is a dumbed-down version of Cricket, another game that's very popular around the world and worth understanding. I'm not sure if it's possible to understand American Football. It seems like a stoppage occasionally broken by plays, a bit like Nascar, where many laps are done under caution. No wonder it hasn't caught on anywhere else in the world. There's a women's version where they play in skimpy gear, another only in America perversion.

Mate I actually switched off from football it seems to bore me now ( English) ...I started watching hockey ( New York islanders fan I watched them when I went to New York at the Barclays centre ) as I work nights and can catch the games live!! They only won because of a sex tape in Thailand which resulted in 3 players getting sacked by the club. One of the players was the son of the manager; Nigel Pearson, who was guaranteed a few more years in the job as he had secured them promotion to the Premier League and were the third team in PL history to escape relegation after being bottom at Christmas. He was sacked due to the sex tape aswell. Claudio Ranieri joined and won the title in his first year in charge. Many journalists and player Riyad Mahrez gave the credit to Pearson for having built the team but would he actually have won it if he was in charge? I guess we'll never know...

This point is not at all for newbies, but I would still like to make it: the difference in playstyles in the different main countries English football is very physical and it has become quite "risky", as in teams attack in 10v10 situations exposing them selves to counters Spanish can be the most spectacular for the untrained eye, since you have lots of goals, mostly due to overall bad defences. This is the reason why Atletico put such good shows the last few years. Simeone taught them how to defend as a team And finally my favorite, Italian football, which is less a sport and more a constant class in tactics. It is more physical than spanish football, but you notice that big teams, very rarely win with a huge goal difference. This is because italian defenders are beasts, even in smaller teams. Positioning and tactical thinking is everything in Italy, which can make it look super boring, but if you know what youre looking at, is the most satisfying

Just stop those trying to change Football , into American sports. it’s existed for well over 100 years, with relegation & promotion. In the U.K.it’s ingrained in our culture, clubs represent an area, they do community outreach work, develop players from the area, really help out the local people. Their not Franchises they fundamentally belong to the area, the owners are only custodian of the club for the time they own it. In WW1 the government asked footballers to enlist in Pals Battalions, to increase enlistment of men from the local areas of clubs. At the Somme the Leeds Pals kicked football’s towards the German frontline machine guns, Leeds as an area lost players & a lot of its young men that day. My entire family support Leeds, my brother comes back from the U.S. to attend matches, my grandparents went to games, it why there was such a backlash against the Super League, it Leeds 16 years to get back into premiership after 2 relegations. he idea of all that being ripped up & clubs playing in a closed super league instead of teams earning the right to play top level European football is against everything the game is about.

I liked the section on American objections- i never quite realised Americans drew a comparison with Hockey and Basketball because of how the pitch markings look similar. I think the video is good but the big thing is the appeal. Why do people enjoy football? The answer is actually easiest to understand when you sit in person at a live match, you can feel the excitement, the tension, you know from intuition when your team are playing well or poorly both from what you can see and how the supporters around you react: The anticipation when a player breaks through a defensive line; the groans when a pass goes poorly; the mocking jeers when an opponent makes a mistake; the cheers when one of your attackers outplays their opponent with finesse; the anger when the referee makes a decision that goes against your team; the fury when you feel a penalty has been unfairly given because an opponent fell too easily in the box; the shock when your team concedes a goal; the utter bedlam when your team scores and the satisfying euphoria of your team grind out a win after 90 minutes of slogging it out. You can watch a match on TV, but in person its a whole different experience. There is the common saying of the twelth man, which is the supporters as a collective. Fans are as much part of the experience as the players on the pitch.

In the English Premiership, we have had players who have covered up to 13.2Km (which is a little bit over 8.2 Miles) during a 90 min game. Now as an athlete, you would expect an intermediate to cover that distance in half a game ie 45 minutes, but remember that in soccer your movement is going to be a mix of sprints, small runs, jumping for headers, running with the ball, tracking backwards, and tackling, so to be doing an average of 5.4 miles per hour over the full 90 mins shows the stamina that elite footballers have to have these days. Soccer requires the most stamina of any current team sport

Another mistake you made was that England AND Wales are both countries that are part of the Premier League (Wales is a separate country, but also part of the UK. Just remember that England and Wales are members countries of the UK just like the UK used to be a member country of the EU). My team Cardiff City was actually in the Premier League 2 seasons ago, but they and I are both in Wales. Also, Swansea, another Welsh team has played in the Premier League within the last 10 years. Additionally other Welsh teams (other than the two I've stated above) like Wrexham (recently bought by Ryan Reynolds, yeah Deadpool) and Newport are also involved in the FA Cup, League Cup and all of leagues between EFL Championship and what you call the "whatevs" leagues. Cardiff City actually won the FA cup back 1927 and got to the final in 2008. Swansea also won the League Cup around 2012. To confuse you even more; Queens Park (a Scottish team) also played in the FA Cup final in both 1884 and 1885. But this was because they were invited to take part. However, a few years later they stopped doing so as the Scottish League system developed and became seperate to the English and Welsh league system. Basically over 100 years ago there weren't as many teams as they are now so teams from Wales, England and Scotland played in some of the same competitions. The Scottish teams eventually stopped doing so, but the Welsh teams continued.

This is why American football will always suck.They should involve the USL and make it a two league system, it would only help the leagues get better. About 4 years ago, I heard a German man, who spent 10 years in America, interviewed about American football. He said that MLS and American Youth Soccer were its own worse enemies. The lack of relegation/promotion was one thing. The other is that youth soccer cost money, a lot of money. And there were no programs for the inner-city youth. There was no promotion of any kind towards any financially disadvantaged youth at all. The German said that American athletic talent wasn't the issue , but American football was more geared to make money, rather than grow the sport. He went on to say that if done right, and with the proper promotion of the game, the US would dominate world football with the athletes the USA have.

Great job. Just a side note that in the German Bundesliga they do promotion and relegation slightly differently. The bottom two clubs from the Bundesliga and the top two clubs from Bundesliga 2 swap places but the team that finishes 16th in the top division plays the 3rd place team in the second division home and away to decide who stays up or goes down.

In the Netherlands it's even slightly more different. There we have number 17 and 18 from the eredivisie that relegate and number 1 and 2 that promote from the second, but then we have like number 3 through 7 plus all of the teams that have won a period in the second division first duke it out with eachother and the winner there plays the number 16 from de eredivisie. Meaning the team that came in last could potentially promote if they won a period title.

I found that in learning soccer, one thing that really helped me was to make friends with people who know and understand the game. My buddy is Portuguese and he invited me to watch games with him, and he'd explain strategy and what was happening, like why are these guys running to where, how the teams were attacking and defending each other. Once I had a bit of a baseline there, I found that going to watch my local MLS club definitely helped in developping an attachment to the game; watching soccer's a lot more fun when you have skin in the game. From then on, a desire to watch the best of the best play the game was sort of a natural evolution to it.

Its worth pointing out that some teams HAVE scaled the football pyramid in the UK. Its rare, but its not totally theoretical. Wigan got all the way to the premier league and won the FA Cup. They were the fastest team to ever go from founding to the top league. Leicester went from the 3rd tier of english football to winning the premier league 7 years later. And even if they can't win, regularly lower league teams have derailed the ambitions of larger clubs. Giant killings are a staple of the English game and are celebrated by neutrals.

Not every player contract has a release clause. In Spain, it is required to have a release clause. If the player is really good, they just add an insane release clause that no one in their right mind would pay, let alone afford without selling all their players. There might be other leagues that requires release clause's in players contract but I'm not sure. In England it's not required and there are very few if any players that have them. Some teams straight up refuse to sign a player if they demand a release clause in their contract (like Liverpool did with Emre Can when he wanted a release clause in his contract when he was negotiating an extension). It's this way in England because they take rivalries very seriously. For example, the last thing Manchester United would want is to have a release clause in one of their best players contract and then have Liverpool just swoop in, pay it, and they just have to sit there and watch as they loose their best player to their biggest rival. Smaller teams also want to have control over the price of their players if they develop into good players that will interest bigger teams. That way, instead of having to honour a 3 or 4 year old clause that was appropriate for the player when he was young or shit, they can demand a fee they'll see as appropriate for his talent and thereby have the funds to spend on a replacement of similar quality or several players in hopes that one or more develope into great players. And even if the two clubs agree on a transfer fee for a player, the player can still refuse to move. If the player refuse to move or the player can't agree on a new contract with the new team, then the team trying to sell is shit out of luck. They must either keep a player they don't want and pay him his salery, or buy out his contract. Usually that means paying his remaining salery in one go as well as a fee for terminating the contract. Or they'll just go on as if nothing ever happened, this is usually how it goes.

Bare in mind the formation you’re told is being used is only a rough guide of the starting positions of the players, not their roles or jobs. Good teams will use one formation for keeping possession, change formation when they lose the ball and want to win it back, then maybe even change again if they want to sit back and defend.

A 3rd Division Team made it to the finals (Union Berlin) and last year a 4th divison team made it to the semi finlas. Yeah Milan are not yet at their best again but from a historical perspective (into the not sooo distant past) Atalanta are dwarfs beside them. Should've been icluded in my opinion.

just to add a point about the english leagues, most fans are somewhat aware of the lower leagues, at least the championship. We also have the FA cup which can involve professional and semi-professional teams, meaning even the most casual fans often get to watch their top division team competing with teams from a much lower league. Not to mention that due to the nature of relegation and promotion, teams can shuffle around quite a lot, so with time you start to learn about many teams as things change from season to season. I also wanted to say that this is a great video for someone wanting to get into the sport, i can tell you it has beautiful and exciting moments and it makes me happy knowing there are people who are here because they want to know more about the beautiful game

Yeah I would say most British football fans know most of the teams in the top 4 leagues
