I've been cutting my own hair for about 10 years now. Never got a consistently decent cut from those national chain haircutters, so decided I could screw it up myself and save some money. Turns out it's not that difficult. I got some tips from watching your video that will give me even better results. Thanks.

I do that before this video. Woohoo. Female here. Had brain surgery in 2018. During covid got the clippers out and shaved right side of head in celebration of no more regrowth of benign tumors. Im a sassy senior pushing 70. My left side is a wave of grey infused black curls. I cut that by twirling pin curl style. As a kid thats how i curled my hair twirling hair within a hair pin. So the back of head and right side are shaved. CPAP fits better and doesn't pull on hair. Thank you for the video and reinforcing my technique! 🎉Cheers from California.

I've only had two store-bought haircuts in my life and I'm 76. My first haircut was when I was too young to remember it, but my father said he would never take me back to the barber because I screamed and embarrassed him. Because there were four of us brothers, Dad bought a pair of mechanical hand clippers first. Later he bought an electric set which he used to cut us boy's hair for years. When I was about to graduate from high school I decided I needed a professional haircut for graduation. The barber made so much fun of my hair being like 'Hog Hair' like the people who lived down in the poor area had. I paid him a quarter and left. And I've never been back to a barber shop since. For the last 58 years, I've cut my own hair. Hair cuts have gone from a quarter per head to twenty and thirty dollars a head... I've saved some real money over the years... And... Truth be told, there are only a couple of days between a bad cut and a good look that's grown out to hide the mistakes... So... Yeah... You can cut your own hair... I've done it... For decades...

What a gem!, I began cutting my own hair at the beginning of lockdown, my first attempt left me looking like the accomplished actor Sir John Mills in his unforgettable role as Michael in the film "Ryans Daughter" (a must watch if you haven't seen it!), as time went by my confidence grew, but it still took me around an hour, using a selection of guards to cut my hair, I tried your method today and bam! you've helped me nail it, not only that but I've made an appointment at my local barbers for my next cut to show my appreciation and support a local small business.

I bought clippers at the very start of the first lockdown and began cutting my own hair being quite pleased with the results, even though it was a shaky start, getting better with each cut and time. Having watched this guys vids and taking on board his experience and well-explained easy-to-follow tips perfected my technique and consider myself almost a pro on my own hair. I feel bad taking business from the young lad who cut my hair prior to COVID by not returning to him. He was talking about going to live and work in Ibiza so am hoping that's what he did. (If you are out there and read this and you worked in S.Notts) Thanks for this vid and others all of which are great. I'm a fan.

I have a pixie and use either a 6 or 7 guard for length as still want to look feminine. I also have a straight edge razor I use to detail my fringe. With your video it works like a charm every time. And yes, RELAX as you use the clippers!! You will achieve a better result.

This video and several others of yours have given me the confidence to try this, and I am so glad that I did. I have two self-haircuts (plus a couple of touch-ups) under my belt now and I am excited about the results. I look forward to improving my technique. I'm an older guy (YOB 1952) with some remaining 'fine motor skills' and, as long as I remain "relaxed", everything works out pretty well. I'm a woman and have worn my hair either long, or in a flat top, for about 35 years. I've cut it myself for almost all my adult life, with clippers. I finally gave up trying to get the blend on the side right (because I had never been taught how to use clippers) and just buzz the whole thing except for my fringe. But now I've learned about cutting with the grain! I can't wait to grow the top out a bit and try your technique. Yay!

After a bit of practice, I could probably cut my hair just the way I like without waiting at the hair salon for like 2 hours. Remember folks, there's always the nuclear option if you fuck up, just cut the sides and the backs with 3mm and the rest with 21mm. I did it that way last time and it wasn't half bad.

Huge thanks for this tutorial! I'm slowly coming out of a depressive episode where I really didn't care about myself and just cut my hair with kitchen scissors a few times when it got annoyingly long. And as I get more motivated and care more about myself again, I also wanted my hair to look OKish. Still couldn't motivate myself to go to a hairdresser, so getting some clippers and following this tutorial was an obvious solution. As a fun fact, I actually used the kitchen scissors again, but only because my clippers have a safeguard that doesn't allow them to cut way too long hair. So I used the scissors to shorten the hair to the length the clippers can handle. I'm very happy with how my hair turned out (for sure not 100% perfect, but so much better than before and better than I expected...), will definitely do this again in the future! Also funny that in my place, a pair of cheap, but surprisingly decent clippers costs less than a visit at the hairdresser ;)

Especially the shown method starting at 04:13 made the difference in my case and I was always cutting to the wrong direction in the past. No more in the future and happy with the result. Super helpful clip and everybody can do this. BIG THX! 👍

Thanks for this. I've been freeballing my own haircuts since COVID locked us down. I've been doing two kids too. The "going forward on top" technique is new to me and I will give it a shot. Kids have been getting a 4 guard on top and a 2 on the sides with a 3 in between to kind of blend a bit. For my own I go 3 on the side like this, but tight along the skull up to the top hair whihc you suggest avoiding. Topside I just go finger length on top in the shower with scissors a couple times a week. The biggest PITA has been doing my own neck. That is always a mediocre job.

Thanks a lot for this video. I just tried it today and wow I am so happy. I had a bit of trouble with my crown and I kept thinking "No.3 does not equal 3mm" so of course I grabbed the 3mm by mistake. Thankfully your other videos provided me with the ability to fix my mistake! My hair is shorter than I wanted but it all worked out.

I found this video last night and was really intrigued. So I liked and subscribed and then watched it like three more times today and then I got my brother's clippers out and did it. I only everything with the 3 guard today and I really think that it looks good. Tomorrow I will finish with the 2 and the 1 and edge over my ears and clean up my neck with the detailing trimmer. You're right, if people just follow your instructions there's nothing to be scared of.

4:11 top of the head. With the grain of the hair to reduce the bulk - not the length. Cool. From another of your videos - a 2 guard could then help to blend in the top with the sides (again going with the grain, top of side down - as you introduced!) That's the only improvement to this video I could notice for self-haircut. (But I know you were just using a 3 to keep it simple).

Wow, you're a lifesaver! I started experimenting with cutting my own hair when lockdowns started. @@theoneminutebarber Thanks! One tip I had was to stand in the bath and angle the bathroom cabinet mirror with a handheld mirror to see the back of my head easily. The clippings can be easily collected from the bath (don't flush them down the plughole in case you get a blockage!)

Hi Mike, greetings from another Mike in San Francisco. Thank you so much for your videos; I finally took the plunge & bought a Wahl Haircutting Kit & used this video to guide me. Your instructions are clear & to the point, thank you for your generosity in sharing your skills for the benefit of others. Just finished cutting & had to comment here in appreciation. The only difficulty I had was having to use my left hand (I'm right-handed) in addition to looking at a mirror image while cutting (oh, man, I'm going to cut my ear off or something worse 🤣). I just took my time & by the time I finished, I was more comfortable with it. Just will take more practice holding the clippers while looking at the mirror, maybe using my right hand on the left side. When I showed the results to my wife, she said I looked no different than when I went to the barber the last time. Can't believe how good it looks for the first time self cutting with clippers. For over a year now, I've been cutting my hair with my nail scissors 😂🤣😆!!! Now I feel like a human being again instead of a crazy hermit. I'm 64, so this shows you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Thank you so much!

That's awesome Mike, I love to hear stories like this. Well done. I'm glad too that the nail clippers have been replaced. That must have taken an eternity. 🤌✂️ And I completely get the left hand plus mirror thing, the brain just can't compute for some reason, but stick at it. It becomes second nature after a few cuts.

@@theoneminutebarber UPDATE: Just finished my third self-cut & made a major breakthrough. After the euphoria of the first haircut wore off, I could see some rough spots of my work. No problem, I'm a beginner. After the second self-cut, it looked like I was having problems blending where the top meets the sides. I'm better at holding the hand mirror to see the back, but manipulating the clippers in the mirror at certain angles is still problematic. After my first pass today, I looked at the problem areas in the mirror & visualized how to approach them, passing over them with the clippers off as a dry run. I tried relaxing by closing my eyes while doing it, and realized I could keep the clippers perfectly in line. EUREKA! CUT THOSE AREAS WITH MY EYES CLOSED! So, I picked a small area with a problem, turned on the clippers & closed my eyes, and I was able to get that spot with perfect control of the clippers by eliminating visuals & relying on touch alone. Like flying a plane in zero visibility with instruments. Absolutely perfect! I then went over all the others spots that needed attention one by one, eyes closed relying on touch, and the result was PERFECTION! It sounds crazy, but it worked!!

I've been cutting my own hair throughout the covid lockdowns. The most difficult task is a steady hand, using my less dominant hand and cutting opposite of the mirror. This guy is a barber, so he has the hand skills & muscle memory to do this properly. I'm too scared to cut it short like that. I just kept mine long & manageable!
