My neighbor was a flame thrower operator on Iwo Jima. I’d have to ask my father who talked to him about 10 years ago about further details but when he landed but he went through about 4-6 other marines who carried the tank while he had the flamethrower. He refused to get to know any of the replacements knowing they would just die. After weeks of fighting it was only him and a captain of his unit who were the only original landing men and the replacement officers assumed he hadn’t been there long so his wounds from the flamethrower and days of continual combat were overlooked. To the captain’s amazement he was still alive (both assumed each other dead) but he was almost completely blind by that point from the heat, wounds, and infection of his face. His captain forced him to leave on a medical ship and said to him “Gene you’re done”. He was sent with a soldier who could no longer walk so he carried the man on his back while the other guy directed him. He learned years later that the captain died the next day after he was sent for the hospital ship. Mr. Gene is still alive but he can no longer remember anything or anyone.

If they didn't lose the whole garrison and could continue naval operations in the Pacific from another island that would be a Pyricc victory. But Japan lost the whole island and from it bombers could target all of Japan unhindered by anything but their homeland defences. For the U.S this is a complete victory and even though the cost was higher than normal everything that was lost despite any tragedy could easily be replaced. The U.S was military production god and you could see it from every shipyard and factory converted for war production. Fun fact, the japanese perspective at this point, commander of the island kurabayashi is shocked...According to his transcripts...Mt surabachi had enough food to last for 10days. But the mountain fell in
@carltonace16062 жыл бұрын
Not only because it was believed to be most defended. The biggest reason to have Surabachi fall quickly is because it has a commanding view of the landing beach. As long as the Japanese hold it, they can fire down on everything that comes on the island. So the mountain has extreme tactical significance. There is no way to know that the defenders on the mountain would soon be unable to continue harassing the landing zone due to ammo depletion.
@values262 жыл бұрын
@@carltonace1606 You are also correct. You should check out the book "tomb called iwo jima". It talks about the japanese survivors and kurayabashi perspective. In one interesting report, alot of the japanese soliders who survived surabchi said they had no idea if their bullets even connected during the first day due to the debri of their artillery shells...Plus the hills in the north and the quarry in the east was where most of the artillery and mortars came from. Alot of Surbachi's artillery units were destroyed during pre naval bombardment. Another transcript from kurayabashi, was that he actually shot a flare and the iwo jima generals blue horns to signal collective firing due to many defenses' communication lines were destroyed from the pre naval bombardment. Which meant not all of the defenses fire power was released within the first hrs and in some cases days...which reduced the american casulry rate...and explained why surbachi shocking fell 5 days prior tp expectation from the japanese persepective...yes they were running low on ammunition but their a many defenses not firing due to the lack of communication..which could really give surabachi another day......Their was a story in book which reports a japanese unit on the opposite base slope of surabachi had no clue the battle started until noon of the first day when they saw the American units reached the opposite shore of the landing zones. They assumed the explosions and firing were prenaval bombardment....interesting

It always amazes me that these battles are so well documented that you can reasonably put the locations of individual soldiers on the map. There's sure to be some guesswork still - some bits the guy writing down the main report didn't see directly, other accounts differing slightly and whatnot, but it's still most impressive. It's also kinda a nice touch that when it zooms out far enough, the Japanese and American flag markers where people died become kinda hard to distinguish from one another - it becomes just marbled red and white dot indicating the position where someone died horribly (or was horribly maimed). Completely accidental, I'm sure - if I were watching it on a big 4k panel I'd probably be able to tell the difference, but it seems almost poetic that things get blurred like that when the map zooms out.

Another top-notch video Ops Room! I just don't know HOW you do it. Such detail! I can only IMAGINE the amount of work that must go on behind the scenes. Please know that your efforts are very much appreciated. I just have to login to KZbin and see "Oh, a new video by The Ops Room?" and that's an insta-click from me! PS: Very nice surprise visit from Drachinifel! Love it when amazing content providers collaborate!

Thankyou for releasing this relatively close to part 1. I forget what happens part 1 when part 2 comes out and I'm trying to catch up to speed on how they got here, and like its fresh in my mind still.

My great grandmother (also my step-mom's grandmother) was dating this guy for a while and he had a brother who served on the Saratoga at Iwo Jima when it was struck by one of the plane during the kamikaze attack. His brother was a radio operator and went to get breakfast just as the plane struck moments after which he survived.

Love this channel, the attention to detail is really amazing and the narration is great, thank you! Would love to see videos on the battle for Betio, Manilla and Okinawa for WWII. While watching a documentary years ago I heard there was a 3-day long battle for Manilla Ballpark, wow!

There they battled up Iwo Jima hill Two hundred and fifty men But only twenty-seven lived To walk back down again And when the fight was over And Old Glory raised Among the men who held it high Was the Indian, Ira Hayes Call him drunken Ira Hayes He won't answer anymore Not the whiskey drinking Indian Or the marine that went to war
