You have such excellent videos on getting quilters to think beforehand rather than just trusting the pattern. Skill level comes into the mix, but if we learn to think and find a better way when we first learn to quilt, we will be miles ahead! Great video! Thank you!

I totally agree. In this day and age, getting the most out of every scrap of fabric is very important to me (and many people). I find myself rejecting more and more patterns because of extra piecing or excess waste. Thanks for this video 🙂

Lol. I'm going to start using '" mush mashed" in my descriptions. Lol. Fun word. I agree with you on this. Fewer seams. Fewer corners to match. Less mistakes. Less fabric. Thank you for sharing ❤

Some of these higher-seam-count blocks allow you to 'hide' bias edges. Avoiding those stretchy edges is beneficial to some... especially beginner quilters.

Thanks for this great video. A good reminder to read your pattern and think about the best way to sew it.

I agree completely. I end up getting lots of little scraps because my employer wants the shop samples made according to the pattern that accompanies the kit. Annoying, but the offcuts make great little leader/enders, that I get to keep. (Which are then trimmed with Deb Tucker's tools.) 😊

You Tuckerized the patterns! LOL! I find I'm doing that more now. The flying geese are used so much in that HST method. Cheers Maureen.

Once again Maureen, you hit it out of the park, encouraging us to read the pattern first and make a sample block! I’ve ran across some of the above instructions you have zeroed in on with more pieces and more seams and refuse to assemble them the way it’s suggested, when there a much better ways. The customer quilt you showed at the beginning is beautiful! Just a glimpse of it shows how much time and labor this Mom put into this quilt for her son. A valuable lesson for all of us🧡🧵

Great video encouraging us to think before we simply follow a pattern. And making a sample first - excellent advice! 💛👍from Somerset UK

I agree! All good advice. Through your videos you've made me remember to pay closer attention to the pattern BEFORE I start cutting. I just bought the Deb Tucker Diamond Rects ruler for a pattern I got recently; I'm anxious to get strted on it.

I agree 100%. I do have a case where the project is using scraps, and I may need to do some of the 2 split rects to get one v block, but that is an anomaly due to the scraps already being cut (and not by me). It depends a lot on how I go about executing the design and how big I go, but it is a legit reason to do the seemingly stupid seaming.

Another reason to follow your advice. More pieces, greater chance of errors in cutting and sewing back together.

Great topic. I minimize pieces where I can. But when I am scrapping or just designing as I go I get a lot of seams. Where I have a lot of seams I press them open.

I agree with the comment of @jenmckitrick as to why people are drawn to the "more seams" methods. People know how to make an HST so that makes them feel comfortable with that starting point. I for one didn't grow up with Deb Tucker (sounds like I should have) and was reluctant to purchase specialty rulers so never explored their wonders. I do admit that I take inordinate satisfaction from following a Fabric Cafe pattern and having the center of the hourglass blocks come out perfectly flat--I consider it a fun challenge. Intellectually, I agree with you completely --fewer seams are better. Emotionally, I may just continue with my methods because I can, not because I should. That said, I won't miss any of your videos because I find them fascinating and worthwhile viewing. and there may be a particular quilt that calls out for flying geese and I will make them because of your opinion!

Great advice as usual! I can't afford to buy patterns and make up my own so usually end up doing things the most logical way like you do. That said, I am planning on making one of those rail fence type patterns with all flying geese blocks for a friend because I know she likes this type of pattern. However I hate making flying geese! So for once I might go the uneficient way and use HSTs. About the quilt you showed us, please don't make the lady feel bad about her points. After it's quilted and washed and puffy it won't be as noticeable and since she made the same mistake over and over the quilt looks quite balanced without some glaring mistake being obvious. I used to be a perfectionist and it sucked the fun out of projects. Now I embrace my little mistakes and move on and enjoy the process. Anyway what son would not be happy to receive a beautiful hand pieced quilt made by his mother? Mistakes and all😊.

I’m in agreement. Work smarter. Not harder. I think maybe people take all of the extra steps if they are making a scrappy quilt?

Very good advice and opinions/ You asked why would one use a more pieced and seamed block over a more simplified one. I though that making the quilt scrappy or making a quilt with optical illusion piecing.

I agree, but sometimes it is a matter of know-how and tools. For example, I can make a half-rectangle triangle unit oversized and trim it down, but I am not sure what precise size and shape to cut the diamond for a diamond in a square unit. In patterns and tutorials, less efficient methods can make things seem simpler and more beginner-friendly. Fabric Cafe's 3 yard quilt patterns use HSTs to make flying geese, square in a square, hour glass, etc.

Fewer seams also makes a stronger quilt, especially one that will be heavily used like a baby or child’s or pet’s quilt.

I agree with you but think it happens because pattern writers don't want to promote a certain ruler or some of us don't have the v and split recs rulers needed. If you're not sure you'll use it in another project, some of these rulers can be pretty expensive. But agree that I'd rather do it with less seams and fabric for all the reasons you give. Thanks again.

This is a good reason to join a guild! Chances are good that someone will have the special ruler and would loan it out. Some guilds have lending libraries.

To the maker of the quilt shown in the beginning. It's BEAUTIFUL. Your son is a lucky man to have you as a mom. Although the advice is good, some older patterns are written with antiquated directions, before the famous influencers discovered more efficient ways to accomplish the same results. To the Opinionated Quilter .. I hope you don't mind my opinion... Did you get permission from the woman who pieced this quilt before you highlighted everything she did wrong (in YOUR opinion)?

I prefer less seams but I also like to use up smaller pieces so I do turn half square triangles into flying geese.

A reason to use more pieces with more seams: using scraps that are too small to cut the combined piece from.

Only reason I would see to create as a unit would be how the quilt blocks fit together. But I agree, why do all that extra work and create bulk….

I think a lot of times when a pattern designer shows an inefficient way of doing something it's because they're pushing a certain manufacturers rulers.
