One thing I do with the leftover scraps from making a quilt... I make a pillowcase to store the quilt in creating a design with the scrap strips, squares, etc. It can then be used as a decor pillow when the quilt is on or off the bed. My scrap bin is quite small because I do this. Love your videos. I don't like wasting anything.

Leftover triangles or scraps might be helpful to those experienced people that can create something wonderful, unfortunately that isn't me. I donate mine, and it makes me really happy. Thanks so much for not making me feel guilty about my small scraps.

As usual, a lot of useful tips! I love the Elizabeth Hartmann quilt behind you - I've done one of hers in the past, and I'm about to begin another (along with the scrap challenge).

Another great video, thank you. ❤. In my opinion, paper piecing such a block as the diamond in a rectangle means you can use small scraps rather than yardage strips, and one doesn’t have to buy yet another expensive ruler.
@theopinionatedquilter
@theopinionatedquilter Жыл бұрын
Depending on the size of the diamond, many are large and you have to use large pieces and then you still have scraps. That being said, you have to do what works for you.

I learned the old traditional way of piecing and construction. I thought I'd try something new. So I sent for a pattern and when it arrived I found the instruction booklet and it showed all the cutting was squares and rectangles. Well I puzzled over this for several weeks until I decided I just can't use that method. The amount of waste was too much and the instructions were complicated a d required sitting at the machine for hours. None of those things appealed to me. So I've decided to redraw the pattern in a way that combines the old hand applique and try to remain close to the pattern. Thanks so much for your discussion, it helped me make up my mind.

I am using the FP for the Vintage Kite blocks. I found that the cutoffs from the background fabric can be used for the background fabric in another kite if you just make sure that you using the correct angle 😉. I always measure the FP and use smaller fabric than the pattern asks for so I don't use as much as it calls for

Great ideas! Have a question on the blocks you cut and added the stripe material, the block turned out same size as the one on the left side. Did you cut out extra fabric on the cuts so the block remained the same size as the original?

Another great video! Thank you. I do wonder why not just cut the ends of the squares so that they're even and then cut the blocks from there. I guess I don't understand how that would be so different from making a bias block. (I do think the bias block looks great, I just see it as more waster.)
@TheSewingChannel
@TheSewingChannel Жыл бұрын
Great question CJ. 😀Sometimes it's printed so crooked...even if you try to cut square..it will not look evenly square🤷🏻‍♀Yes, there is waste with bias cut "check". When you cut it on the bias it camouflages the wonky printing. Eyes are always drawn to the "crooked block" LOL🤣 Grab some checkered fabric and give it try✅ It really comes down to whether or not you want to see crooked in your quilt or not LOL🤣 I hope that helped a bit...Happy Quilting❣

Misprints? Cut on the pattern not the thread. Its going in a quilt and will be sewn all around and secured in the middle. A whole inch off will make no difference at all.

I think your sawtooth star example is more of a square in a square. Don't the lines that make the points go the opposite direction than what is drawn in the example?
