What broke my heart was Arya rebuking her dad, after Ned said that Arya "looked like Lyana." Arya replied, "But she was beautiful." As a little girl, Arya has in her head that she is homely.

I always love getting tidbits about how Ned ruled the north. Despite what he thinks he does so exceedingly well, which is pretty incredible considering he had zero coaching as that would've gone to Brandon. Not to mention Rickard died w/Brandon so there wasn't any guidance after Brandon passed...it was just 'next man up'. And Ned f-ing killed it. Love him🐺🖤.

Several things: First - I am not sure I understand the people who claim that Sansa's character "grew" through the series. Her take on the tourney in the Vale is almost identical to the one she displayed in this chapter; Baelish just has a better ides how to operate a Sansa :). Second - Ned did an absolutely remarkable thing by setting Arya with an exceptional sword master - more than his father did for Lyanna: finding this master was the most successful thing Ned accomplished in King's Landing and it is quite incredible, although the fact that Arya can tell the accent, indicates that there were people from Free Cities visiting Winterfell. Third - Syrio was an exceptional teacher - in Bran's vision he sees that Lyanna was beating Brandon in swordplay, while Arya, being older, never managed to beat Bran. As a personal note: I teach fencing this year, and having he students to get a correct en guarde position is a challenge enough, and as a reference to a "dancing master", I had the most success with a girl with a ballet background :)

I think hard times and being bullied make you a better person usually. And being flattered and living soft make you a worse person usually…but I think some people with strong natures stay good or bad no matter what. That’s what’s fascinating for me about Sansa. Has Sansa suffered enough for her nature to change in the end or is it fixed…? And Aryas Will seems strong… in the end how much can she change? If Sansa and Arya truly come together in the end It has to be because Sansa has improved… but CAN she?
@BurkeanMama2 жыл бұрын
Years after this, Sansa is STILL blaming Arya for Lady's death. So no Sansa hasn't learned, hasn't changed. Sansa is as selfish the last we saw of her as she was when we first met her.
@Cole_E2 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to consider that Lyanna might have been more like Sansa than Arya. She was wilful and bold (we know that from Meera's story about the Knight of the Laughing Tree) but she was clearly something of a romantic. She cried at Rhaegar's music and I feel like the whole notion of playing a mystery knight is quite romantic regardless of the intent behind it. The more I think about it, the more she strikes me as what Sansa could have been if she was a little more Northern and a lot less concerned with becoming a carbon copy of her mother.

Ned should have given Sansa that lecture about being family and acting like sisters. He knows Sansa lied, and he does nothing about it. It is just more of Ned's refusal to stand up for what is right. He wants peace in his family, so Jon goes to the Wall and Sansa is allowed to lie. Ned's refusal to deal with Cat and Cat Jr. destroys everything Ned stands for.

Can I just say that I've always hated Septa Mordane? The favouritism she shows Sansa is appaling, being her little teacher's pet can't have been a good influence for sure. Ned sadly did what many fathers did and still do: he trusted the mother would know what was best. They don't always do. Having a Septa is a southern custom, Winterfell didn't even had a sept before Ned had one built to be nice to Catelyn, I highly doubt Stark girls had septas before, so Mordane being hired was all Catelyn and all her teacher feedback would go to Castelyn only, since in a society like this a girl's education is solely the mother's area. Yet another instance of Catelyn failing has a mother and Ned puting more trust in her than she deserves. Ned is a good dad, but he's so busy all the time, even when he was Lord of Winterfell, let alone King's Landing. Makes me sad when I think of it.
