I loved what he said here. Aliens may be different in a way we can't even conceptualize. They may "live" in a reality that is totally different than ours, or explore the world in different dimensions than we do. The idea of alien civilization is so abstract that every possibility makes no sense or may be genius :P What if "luck" is some alien civilization getting into contact with us. What if time is a way of different entities influencing our existence.

I personally don't find it terribly interesting to allow too many unrestricted exotic possibilities. You can suppose things at infinitum. A game is also only fun once there are SOME rules and restrictions. It's not close- minded to let current knowledge inform speculation and research, it's the only sensible thing you can do if you don't want to soend all your time in the woo-woo weeds. Also, we live in a universe where everything is connected and makes sense in some way. Like, the chance tht you're going to be able to practically exploit some phenomenon that takes a 10 km diameter particle accellerator to even just DETECT, is vanishingly small and unlikely.

I like both the OP and Jo Helsen's comment. I'm also of the opinion that, while a wide range of possibilities exists, there's no civilization that can brake the laws of nature---but there is a catch. We need to know what are the laws of nature. To Queen Cleopatra communication at a distance (like we do today with cellphones) would be something that violates the laws of nature.

Now there are good physicists that are known for hosting shows etc and like to speculate. You can say that they are doing it at least partly for the money. An example would be Michio Kaku, though he is a theoretic physicist, so he can naturally speculate a bit more than his collegues without going off boundaries.

There are a lot of possible limitations even if they exist. For example, if their planet doesn’t have a coal and gas layer the way ours does then how could they have an industrial revolution? If their planet is larger and has more mass, the idea of getting a space craft off it would require so much fuel as to seem unfeasible, or at least not worth the effort.

I agree with Lex here, if those Alien civilizations exist, we wouldn't know about them unless they tried to contact us. The distance are astronomical , and our equipment's to scan the universe are very rudimentary. We have made great strides as a species in understanding black holes, and different cosmic phenomena, take for example the exo-planets that we are discovering routinely now, we make lots of assumption about them that very likely wrong because of huge distances involve. We are very impatient as a species, we want to have all the answers right away, precisely because of what Lex said , we only have 100 years life span which nothing in the scale of our universe.

What we think of as physyical reality could potentially only be "shadows" from something else beyond our perception. The problem with ideas like this, or the idea in your comment, is that these ideas are unfalsifiable, there isnt really a scientific experiment you can set up to test a hypothesis.

Without being certain of anything... I always am astonished about people entertaining the Fermi paradox as they do. My reaction always is: THERE IS NO FERMI PARADOX. The real paradox or question is: how is it possible such scientific minds are able to neglect facts or at least 'lots of indications' that aliens already are here and maybe have been here all the time? How is this possible? It is like a vaudeville repeating itself and doesn't speak well of our rational, our potency of being really scientific. When something is not suiting our narrative we can dismisse it in a fraction of a second, no questions asked. What is scientific about that? Then they ask for proof where you could also ask for a disproving either ways. The 'facts' for both sides are as certain (or not), but still only one side gets the full 'scientific' backup. Although the scientific method is strong and has proven itself, the fact science is done by humans, makes it you can count on nothing at all. A very strange mix of things. The Fermi paradox' existence is a greater question than it will ever be in itself. (sorry, my English is not very good, is not my native language).

Since Copernicus, astronomy has been one long argument against the notion that Earth is unique among heavenly bodies. The notion that Earth is not unique in this particular respect, among all planets in the universe, seems to me a reasonable conclusion to draw.
@enterpassword3313
@enterpassword3313 Жыл бұрын
@@ultrafly100 the paradox is suppossed to be about the lack of evidence vs high probability of complex, intelligent e.t. life. The first part is fine, but the second part of the paradox is a false premise. The problem starts with the fundamental, most basic notions of calculating the probability, there is no frame of reference from which to start, so there has never actually been any probibilities calculated. What constitutes "high probability" in this instance? None of the scientists have a clue, so they just choose arbitrary measures like size/distance of planets/stars, presence of water. Okay, great, thats better than nothing. So if we find a planet containing water, with a similar sized sun, at a similar distance to earth to the sun etc, what is the probability that planet with have developed life??? Well... still, nobody has got a clue. We have only one identified example of life emerging on its own, and thats here on earth, plus we dont really know how or when, or really even IF that happened the way we think it did.

Lex has such a romantic desire to believe that there is intelligent life in the galaxy. In a lot of ways his desires and beliefs about intelligent life elsewhere are very analogous to religious beliefs or believing in God. People who believe in God are doing so without any physical evidence. They have faith that God exists even though there is no real hard evidence. Lex is doing the same thing. He has faith that there must be intelligent life in the universe even though we have no real hard evidence at all.

@@omarkenitra1558 that still isn’t proof that there is any other intelligent life anywhere else. It just means it seems likely that there is.
@davidmcmillan4183
@davidmcmillan4183 Жыл бұрын
It’s more a probabilistic argument. With the number of planets there are that would be capable of harboring life, its very very likely it exists elsewhere. No one said in this galaxy there is intelligent life. There are over 100 billion galaxies. There is estimated to be around 2*10^22 earth like planets in the universe. That’s like if you took every grain of sand on 100,000 earths. We’re one of those grains of sand. Surely at least one more is like us? I think the problem is more than intergalactic distances are so gaping that it’s very unlikely that a civilization will make that voyage. If there’s no way to create wormholes then the distances are too great.
@theburnetts
@theburnetts Жыл бұрын
@@davidmcmillan4183 yes but the issue is that we have absolutely no idea what the probability is that life spontaneously evolves on a planet. Maybe it’s relatively common. But perhaps it is super super super rare for life to spontaneously appear on any planet. In fact it might be so rare that it doesn’t matter how many planets there are. We just have no idea what that probability is. So it’s just a guess that is as likely to be right as it is likely to be wrong. Or perhaps every civilization that gets as far as we have destroys itself. We just have no idea. So we really have absolutely no idea if there is intelligent life out there or not. It’s a complete guess.
@davidmcmillan4183
@davidmcmillan4183 Жыл бұрын
@@theburnetts I could be mistaken but I believe that once the earth formed and developed the right conditions that early microscopic life forms emerged fairly rapidly (in galactic timescales). I would say that we can get an idea of the likelihood of this happening elsewhere by studying it and (especially) seeing how quickly it happened. Imagine you sit on the edge of a cliff, and within two minutes you see an eagle fly by. You could pretty reasonably conclude that eagle sightings are quite common wherever you are. Of course you could have just been very lucky, and an eagle passes only once every 50 years. But the more reasonable conclusion is that your experience is somewhat close to the statistical average, rather than that it was outlandishly lucky. I think it’s pretty plausible that we’re the first civilization in our galaxy, but in the universe almost certainly not. However, the nearest galaxy to us is over 2 million light years away. Even a civilization that already colonized its entire galaxy would view that as a huge endeavor. Imagine a 3 million year voyage with no external source of energy or sustenance through the void of intergalactic space. Last point: civilization on this planet is only a few thousand years old. Complex life is billions of years old. If we follow lindy’s principle we can expect civilization to last maybe a few thousand more years and life to continue on for billions more. So in all likelihood if there’s a solution to the Fermi paradox it’s probably that civilization has a short shelf life, so I think I agree with you there.
