This chemistry video tutorial explains how to memorize the polyatomic ions. It provides the name of the common polyatomic ions, the charges and their respective formulas as well. Common polyatomic ions include sulfate, nitrate, acetate, ammonium, hydroxide, sulfite, cyanide, phosphate, disulfide, bicarbonate, hydrogen sulfate, bisulfite, chromate, dichromate, pyrophosphate, permanganate, thiosulfate, peroxide, superoxide, oxalate, borate, iodate, perchlorate, hypochlorite, bromite, and nitrite just to name a few. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems including a quiz that tests you to see if you remember the common polyatomic ions.

I am having such a hard time with my chemistry class and it's really affecting my self-esteem. I watched this video a couple months ago and you were right. "might as well learn them now". I spent most of the night watching this and making flash cards and when you did the quiz questions. I got 85% or so right and I got teary-eyed. Thank you for making this video and giving me hope. Bless you.

Hey! Just saying! You might actually want to improve your aptitude skills if you were not able to actually find this pattern on your own. I know close to nothing about chemistry and the minute he taught us a couple sets, i was immediately able to tell the pattern here. I thought it was obvious but seeing so many people telling it was brilliant that he gave them this pattern seemed weird to me. So just pointing out!

For the pattern seeking minded, we have a rule of thumb. Let A stand for some nonmetal, I will use 1- charge for the overall charge of the ion or polyatomic ions for illustrative purpose; we could use others such as 2-, 3- , etc. The labeling scheme is: A - , AO - , AO2 - , AO3 - , AO4 - Names: A-ide, hypo-A-ite, A-ite, A-ate, per-A-ate Note that there are exceptions to this scheme, for instance in the Nitrogen category N has a 3- charge but Nitrite and Nitrate have 1- charge. Chlorine and Bromine behave well according to this scheme. Also note that per is short for hyper, to indicate more oxygen atoms, 'hypo' means under or less. When you are 'hyper' you have too much energy. Also a useful tip, to remember -ate ending has more oxygen than -ite ending, 'ate' sounds like after you ate (paste tense) when you have more food, so you will have more oxygen than ite.

2 even number atoms = -2 charge 2 uneven number atoms = +1 charge 1 even and 1 uneven = -1 charge except for the phosphate groups which have a -3 charge If the are more atoms in the molecule for example HPO3 you just add or subtract the charge of the added atom in this case a +1 for the hydrogen so HPO3 is -2 charged.
