The frustration-aggression hypothesis states that if we experience frustration from being prevented from achieving a goal, it will lead to aggression, a cathartic release from frustration.
Here is an outline of the stages of the hypothesis:
An attempt to achieve a goal is blocked (goal interference).
Frustration occurs.
An aggressive drive is created.
Aggressive behaviour is displayed (cathartic).
The social learning theory of aggression explains how aggressive patterns develop, what provokes people to behave aggressively, and what sustains such actions after they have been initiated. The value of particular aggressive acts derives from social labeling.
excitation transfer model suggests that people rely on external rather than internal cues to distinguish and label specific emotions. A necessary condition of excitation transfer theory as applied to aggression requires that a person experiences anger when provoked, directed at the source of the provocation.
The General #aggression Model provides a theoretical framework to explain why the weapons effect occurs. This model postulates that exposure to weapons increases aggressive thoughts and hostile appraisals, thus explaining why weapons facilitate aggressive behavior.
According to Cognitive Neoassociation Theory aggressive thoughts, emotions and behavior are linked together in memory and activation of one aggressive concept is spread to other associated concepts.
The heat hypothesis states that hot temperatures increase aggressive motivation and (under some condi- tions) aggressive behavior. The heat effect is the observation of higher rates of aggression by people who are hot relative to people who are cooler.
Alcohol can contribute to increased anger, particularly in people who have higher levels of trait anger. Because these individuals are naturally angrier, they tend to behave more aggressively when drinking.
Traditionally, men are considered more aggressive than women, and this preponderance of men is linked to testosterone. However, a recent review indicated that overall aggression scores do not differ between the sexes; rather, men are more physically aggressive, whereas women are more indirectly aggressive
