I noticed you made the point later in the video One acute point that you may have missed is that one of the reasons the points of power chose to move away from crude executions was because the criminal tended to become a martyr among the public after the execution, because they say him/her suffer so immensely. It was like watching the crucifixion.

The idea at ~37:00 defines for me the core of Foucaults approach in that book. People observing the exertion of sovereign power, forming their own opinion on it and intervening at will had to be stopped, so the exertion of power needed to escape the public eye. Through discipline, not only hiding the origin and place of sovereignty became easier, but also the possibility to negotiate power and its normative framework democratically became increasingly difficult.
