i've owned one of these for 20 years and it still works well. the legs and pot supports are no problem, hold the folded stove upside down and let the pot supports fall straight down, then unfold the legs. flip it over and the pot supports flip into place easily. i can do it in the dark in 2 seconds. fuel cans in my area cost $1-$1.50 in a 12-pack at asian stores.

I understand your frustration with the legs and the pot supports. However as you mention it is extremely reliable and to me that's a big plus. The legs and the pot supports are a minor inconvenience in my view. But yes I can understand how it might frustrate you LOL if I didn't have enough little stoves already I would definitely buy it. I do prefer the size compared to the tiny ones that I already own. The only thing I do not like is the price I think it should be around $60 or less.

Bought an Iwatani stove and used it for camping and I guess I forgot to clean after going to the beach. After some time, I opened it some parts has minor rust and after cleaning it looks like new again, I never thought I could use it for a month as primary stove when I newly occupied my flat and really couldn’t beleive it’s performance. Life changer stove! Iwatani, made from Japan, I couldn’t ask for more 🫡

I don’t really see the legs and the pot supports being that big an issue. I don’t care that the company over priced the gas, like you said, you can get it anywhere for cheap, you’re not limited to the cans they sell. I think your criticism of the burner size is legitimate, but I’m rolling my eyes at the other stuff.
@jeffmatthews3798 Жыл бұрын
I like the ‘fiddle factor’. I’ll hand it to someone else and enjoy the show. If it is humorous, let it be. If the company’s butane can attachment isn’t proprietary it isn’t an issue. I’m a canoe camper. My kit is a little heavier (just a little) than a backpacker. The size is not an issue as long as durability is good, and that package looks durable. Thanks Luke. Appreciate your reviews. Your occasional suffering is our benefit. 😎

Don't know why I watched this video, except that I watch nearly all of Luke's videos. I already have what I consider the best solution to my stove needs. A very lightweight, very easily packed Chinese stove for iso pro fuel cannisters, made of titanium that I bought over 6 years ago from Amazon, fits my needs whenever having a fire to cook on is inconvenient. It cost me less than $20. When it fails to cook I hope to replace it with something similar. It doesn't come with any bells or whistles. It won't even light without a match or lighter, but I can live with that. It weighs nothing, packs very small, and always works. It has a dial to control the flame. Turning it gets you from simmer to high heat in just a second. Why would anyone ask for more?

I believe YOU are UP FOR the leg-folding challenge!🤩 I have used Iwatani restaurant tableside stoves and culinary torches for years. They have gone the distance in camp and for emergency use at home. I would put up with the legs, as the system is easy to figure out in regular use. More important to me are stable pot supports and pretty good windshields.

A bed of coals in the Wolf and Grizzly firepit, ambiance glowing, warming a dutch oven full of stew. Off to its side a Firebox twig stove, grilled skewers crackle and hiss, simply seasoned with salt and pepper. A top the low table a Coleman tabletop stove on low flame, kettle sits alight a sake warmer and server ready to pour. The camper, watches the fading flame from the Esbit folding stove, its small fuel tablet lasting only 12 mins, just enough time to cook a mess tin of rice. "A few more minutes, and I'll be able to fluff the rice." he turns to his daughter. "You must be hungry after all that running around you did earlier." His daughter nods, and looks out towards the firepit, the sparkle of the coals reflect in her eyes, "I bet it'll be yummy!" The place settings are ready, and the camper gets up to do a last minute check on the stew. Japanese style car camping. It is not a backpacking, or hiking stove. It is mainly used for kettle pots, Trangia style mess tins, and Sierra styled cups/bowls. Many Japanese camping dishes are very simple, and well suited for the Iwatani stove, such as a serving of steamed rice in a mess tin, miso soup, simmered/boiled dishes that take less than 10 minutes. Many Japanese campers will have a wood stove/brazer for grilling, smoking, or longer than 10 minutes cooking, at the same time have a fueled stove (butane/propane) hotpot/table stove like the Coleman 1 or 2 burner Camping stoves. Yet still have the Iwatani/Fore Winds, BRS3000, JetBoil, Pocket Rocket, SOTO G ST-320 style stove(s) for boiling a small pot of water, for coffee/tea or to heating a retort pack, (e.g. Instant Curry Packet) to go with their mess tin steamed rice. Japanese have a mindset of using the proper tool for the task at hand. I've watched many a Japanese camping video, pull out multiple types of stoves, braziers, etc for a single over-nighter. The Iwatani stove has its purpose.

Pretty much spot on review. I have the same stove. I agree the legs are a bit fiddly. At the end of the day it's a solid stove that has never failed me. Just to note, the Iwatani version here in Japan comes in two versions-FW-CS01-JP and a Junior model CB-JCB. $32.06 and $24.81/I think mine is the Junior model that comes in a green plastic storage case. :)

One thing that does have to be mentioned as an advantage: the fuel canister. Simply put, a butane canister is available at more places than the isobutane cartridges used for most small backpacking stoves (for example, Asian grocery stores will usually have butane canisters because they sell butane stoves to do hot-pot). I wouldn’t want this to do thru-hiking but I can see this being used for casual weekend summer backpacking.
@wing4ever Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the pros are major and the cons are minor (except the company’s price for their brand butane…I agree that is a rip-off). But your major con, the setup and breakdown of the legs and supports, why are you in such a hurry? Is an extra minute or two when you are supposed to be out in God’s country relaxing THAT important? You even stated the QUALITY and FUNCTIONALITY of said supports and legs was excellent. In the end, I ask what are your priorities? I do love your reviews, they are very thorough, leaving plenty of room for the viewer to form their own opinion…thank you and keep them coming!

👍👍 Luke, think you're being a little hard on this stove. Price is a concern but not out of reason with similar stoves. Iwatani is a major mfg in Japan, their stuff is like Snow Peak or SOTO..expensive but quality. Turn the stove upside down and shake it, maybe the supports and legs will auto deploy..who knows. Folded it's fairly small and the case is nice, easily could fit in a pack.

You can use butane cylinders in good stoves made for isobutane cylinders, it makes much more sense. There are two methods for doing this, two types of adapters. I have both in my BOB. The first is an adapter that has a folding tripod and a fuel inlet hose, you attach the butane bottle to the fuel hose, open the tripod and screw your isobutane stove onto the adapter. This method is good because the bottle stays away from the flame and you can place it outside the wind shield, if you use one. The second method is an adapter that you fit to the top of the butane bottle and then fit your isobutane stove to it. In this method the stove sits directly on top of the butane bottle. There are stability problems. But it is very easy to solve the stability problem: you dig a hole, bury the butane bottle a little bit more than halfway and compact the earth around it.

Thank you for reviewing this stove. I would like to see a comparison between other similarly sized butane canister stoves to warrant your frustration with this product. As other stoves using the same type of fuel are either bulky or unstable for pots or cups (3 pot stand versus the 4 on this stove) that I have been looking into for camping. Given the size it's a minor inconvenience as space is a premium on hiking trips.

I have to agree with Luke. Those legs and arms would be a pain in the butt especially when you're cold 🥶 I know when I get to camp after hiking all that way and I just want to settle in and get warm, the last thing I want to do is fiddle with a camp stove. Plus the burner is way to small to cook with a bigger pot if you don't constantly stir it you will burn the center. And even with stirring it still burns ugh. So I rather find something better for the price. Thanks for the awesome review Luke.

What I found was because the burner is a small diameter the heat is concentrated into the middle of the pan and the center of the pan becomes a lot hotter the the outside. That means for cooking non liquids you burn the items in the middle and undercook the items on the outside unless you spend total time tending the cooking. All else was good , a stove is for cooking.

To all the negative comments about Luke being picky. He didn´t say he hates the stove. Just that he wouldn´t pick it because the unnecessary fiddeling and the burner being to small, for the size of the stove. Its good quality but it doesn´t bring the functionality i would ask of a stove for either backpacking or car camping.

If/when the company is reputable and a stove is reliable... for the end user in suitable environments/conditions it's a win/win. I'd overlook the 'fiddling' sequencing of the pot supports and support legs if/when beneficial pros are highly functional to stability and befitting intended cookware. In my view this stove has multi-point 'grasshopper-like' overall design attributes for stability = should be quite good. The overall size and weight are more or less middle of the road... not to overly burdensome, yet not an ultralight. For some users in less demanding conditions; the type of butane canister is widely available and typically inexpensive. That said, I much prefer isobutane/propane mix canisters or propane... and importantly favor threaded canister types. $80 may be a stretch for this stove. On the other hand, cheaper butane fuel sourcing might quickly factor into long run savings.

I had a similar one bought in japan for 40~45usd during my first ever bicycle camping trip 6 years ago. It comes with hard square plastic case not as well made as this. The igniter do failed sometimes due to the stove bouncing around in the hard case causing the ignition needle unable to maintain proper gap to the burner rim. It's pretty robust even after years of use, and it's low heat is good enough for rice cooking. ( but not as fine tuning as SOTO's stove). also do mind that butane doesn't work well in low temp.

It seems like it's well constructed and sturdy and for that alone I think that fiddling with the legs and spot holders could be worth it. However, I agree that the burner size is too small and it brings up a problem with its use case: what kind of camping situation is this really for? In a park and camp situation, where one wouldn't be worried about the weight or size with the propane tank, the burner is too small for group cooking. In long distance hiking you could benefit from the stability and quick boil time, but then the weight and size are more of a concern. I'd rather go with a light alcohol stove or a wood burner kit if I'm gonna carrying everything on my back walking miles a day. If I'm cool with carrying more bulk cause going to hike in and camp in one spot, I'm building a fire for the evening so what do I even need a butane stove for?
@DannyBoyOutdoorsTravel Жыл бұрын
The pot supports or legs do not pose a problem to me at all, once you figure it out, it takes only literally two seconds, btw, a monkey can figure it out, it's not a puzzle. The real problem should be the price and the fact that it looks big for a stove in backpacking.

Thanks for your reviews, Luke. I really appreciate, and trust, your unbiased opinions. As for the Four-Winds stove; What matters most to me are quality, performance and cost. I could overlook the fiddliness of the legs and pot-supports. But at $80.00? That's a bit much. I agree that there other options, that are just as good if not better, for less. Because I'm disabled, and in a wheelchair, I'm strictly a car-camper. I have a single-burner propane stove (the kind that screws directly onto a 2lb bottle) that I bought used over 20 years ago and it still performs extremely well. Possibly the best $5.00 I've ever spent... for camping gear. Then last summer, I bought a Coleman Butane stove for $30.00 and I'm very happy with it. If I have any compliant at all, it's only that the plastic carry-case seems a bit chintzy. Though I must admit it's held up well so far. But then, I've only been out with it a few times. We'll see what it's like in four or five years.

The pot supports and legs wouldn't bother me at all. The biggest con to me is the size of the stove and size of the canister for it when backpacking, so I'll stick with my SOTO windmaster for that. Nice review as usual Luke, keep it up.

The canister is lighter than a Isobutane canister. It's also narrower in size and cheaper in bulk, , but it sucks in cold weather.
