I have the AR 55 pack, also primarily a multi-day climb design. Pared down, in this case to 1 bottle bucket which can safely accommodate 2, 3/4 litre bottles, on the left side. With a pair of add-on hip belt pockets it makes a decent trek pack, large enough to extend the distance between re-supplies when needed, but compact enough to give no encouragement to packing too many nice-to-haves. Thankfully, there's no fancy-pants mesh on the outside, a widespread and popular design feature (failure) that does not impress me. The idea is promoted that mesh pockets are good for drying tents, fly's etc, which is utter nonsense, unless you are prepared to remove your pack, unpack whatever you are drying, re-fold to expose another square foot of saturated fabric, repack and continue. How many times a day will you need to do that. It'll really help your schedule when you are trying to complete that section hike in whatever limited time your workaday life will let you have, won't it? Good luck with that folks, so just shake off the excess, shove it in the outside pocket, crack on and forget the nonsense about drying it out. What does it matter anyway? Flysheets are supposed to get wet aren't they? Pack makers like it because mesh is cheaper than Xpac, Raptor, Dyneema grid210 etc. Saves a few grams too which in the obsessive world of uber uber ultralight is a big selling point, but is that small saving worth sacrificing reliable stowage? I think not. Mesh is useful for gear lofts, fishing nets butterfly nets etc but is better suited to clothing the nether end of the female form than the rough life of a pack. So if any pack designers get to read this, please give thought to knocking this piece of silliness on the head and returning to solid fabric pockets which are not only durable but also allow reliable closure. Ok, rant over. My excuse is that you were using the slightly smaller version of the more or less same pack as mine. Thanks for another great vid, I'm looking forward to many more. You help put a shine on the grey wet dreariness of a late autumn day in England, when the cold clings and as some of you on your side of the big water say, you wear the air. Good luck, stay safe, n God bless.

It's funny you talk about cutting a limb off the top of your house! I also did that one day! I was on my tip toes cutting down a limb over my roof and it fell right on top of me! So I was trapped on the top of my roof with this 150 lb limb on top of me! It took me a few minutes, but I finally figured out that i still had the saw next to me and I cut my way out! What a fun day that was!

Hi Luke, You are so right, I love laying in my tent at night when the rain is pouring doing, and also snow. That's the best part of backpacking, I love taking pictures of wildlife and landscapes. wow, you gave a stranger some water? lol you two are just too nice, not that there's anything wrong with that at all:) Oh, and BTW, yes, "You got me " pretty much every time lol. -Jake PS: I wouldn't mind extended longer videos, I really enjoy watching them, you should spend a few nights out there, 2, 3,or 4 nights. I love watching your overnight trips, when i go backpacking I always watch old videos in my tent at night.

Back in highschool there was a pond in the town park. Lots of ducks, geese, all kinds of waterfowl. We used to go feed them. Loved it! Cut to 10 years later and I took my girlfriend there with some stale blueberry muffins to feed the birdies. We dropped the first couple of crumbs. Then it began. Honking and quacking started from all around. It was cute at first, then they got closer and more plentiful. A moment later we were running for our lives! At least it felt that way. We flew into the car and thew out the muffins and hightailed it out of there! 10 years later and my wife and I still laugh about that day the birds attacked! Thanks for your bird attack story! Luke and Suzie, keep having fun!

Thought I saw city lights in the back ground when you were answering questions. Open Range has the most realistic shoot out of any western at the end. Lots of smoke from the guns, close range shooting. Only part that seemed phony was when after going through 50 rounds of ammo and shooting the crap out of the bad guy, he claims that he wouldn't "waste a bullet" on him to finish him off. I mean come on. It's only one more bullet. Great over nighter. Again Susan adds so much to the video.

About your bird story. My father had a similar experience with some geese. He was biking on a path along a river side and passed up some goslings. The mother got bad and flew after him, knocked him off his bike (he has the shoes that lock into the pedals) and ended up breaking his wrist. Them geese can be vicious.

Grouse is my favorite animal to hunt...not very successfully....but I spent much of the spring and summer scouting areas for them. One time I was crossing a creek on a fallen white pine that is about 3' across and a grouse flushed out of the brush and flew right over my head. In my surprise I jumped up, slipped, and crashed into the creek below. Good times.

Great video guys. Love the overnight camping vids. Great perspective on the outdoors and the AT. Keep doing what your doing. BTW Whats the background on the "Strength and Honor" slogan??
@TheOutdoorGearReview
@TheOutdoorGearReview 9 жыл бұрын
Scott Rossi Thank you greatly my friend, we're really looking forward to getting out again. Hopefully soon. As for Strength and Honor, one day I was discussing opposing personalities and some negative feedback that a viewer had received on a video that he had put up and it hit me; people need a renewed focus on Strength and Honor. Strength to help each other out, to press on, explore, to live a life that isn't on a sofa. Honor in the sense of doing what is right, being honest, letting ego's fall to the way side. Honestly I could probably go on and on about what it means to me personally but you get the idea. I see it as a way of carrying myself throughout the day; I don't have to be jerk while still standing up for what I believe to be right, I can help others, hopefully do some educating while listening to other perspectives. Plus it's an idea, a philosophy that I am passing on to my children. Take care Scott. Be well. - Luke

I love your videos!!! Been hooked on them for about a week now. When you slipped up with your censor bar comment, coming from 18 years of marriage, I found myself immediately feeling awful for you. Us dude's make comments all the time that we don't mean but come out all wrong. Your wife is beautiful and you're a great dude.

Cute video, I really like spending time with you two. So, which coffee is best for camping? Thanks. November, 2021.

I have not seen Sal of your vids, but is there a reason you don't use trekking poles? I can't hike without them.
