A couple of years ago we went skiing in the austrian alps. We took of at 21.00pm and drove all night. Somewhere halfway the temperature started to drop and at some point it was -12°C. The further we drove the colder it became. When we crossed the border between Germany and Austria we stopped in Reutte at a local gasstation to check our windscreen antifreeze because it was frozen from the wind and cold air. So after a nightly 800km ride without sleep in a warm car and dirty windscreen from the salt i went out the car to wipeclean the frontscreen. At that moment it was -23°C and i realy thought i was going to freeze instantly. The day after it was even colder and the locals advised us not to go skiing because we are not used to such freezing temperatures. It could damage our lungs at 1060m altitude. I'm 52 and will never forget this unique moment. It is a once in a lifetime experience.

Congratulations, Lucas! Regardless of whether it leads to a career, I think you made a wise decision. It’s a very good thing to expand your mind and experiences. You will meet students from all over the country and the world, which will broaden your views considerably. You will learn not only facts and how to do things, but you will also learn the why of things, which can be very enlightening. I hope you make the most of your college experience. Good luck!

The storm you experienced is exactly the typical storm we get here in SW Ontario through January then again in March/early April. High winds and tiny snowflakes, switching to white-out flurries. Then freezing rain/sleet, changing to heavy snow. Then a deceptive clear weather day. You drive out on the snow, which is hopefully thick enough to cover the ice layer, it's slushy going (especially on the shoulders) until you get out in the open spaces where the snow that fell is now gusting around creating brief whiteout sections. When you said you took off your windshield cover I literally said "Noooo! don't do that!" at the screen, I knew the freezing rain/sleet was on its way.

That woman you mentioned checking your truck with her light might have been a theft opportunist. As someone who works night jobs, I've seen a lot of folks get their vehicles broken into in remote areas because a thief saw them un-occupied and unobserved. She probably got close enough to see or hear you and decided there wasn't a chance for a quick grab.

I bought an electric power pack generator for 125. I believe it's 400watts. I also bought the micro heater The Bud I think it's called I love both. The low setting on the heater is 175 watts, so it's good, high is 225 watts I think. I bought all this gear, Luke, I'll blame you, lol. I want to waterproof the fly on one of my tents, with a gallon of mineral spirits with dissolved clear silicon one tube. People are a ravin, so will try that. If it does well, I'll make a few tarps. That said, the only times that I was there that had anything to do with any storm was something akin to "probably a bad idea to go on the water today....: (Of course, while at least one waterspout was visible). When we were living in central Illinois, on Christmas Day in 1983, the temperature was -35 F with a -58 F wind chill. Snow up to the gutters. My driveway was about 15 feet by 20 feet, and I spent approximately 8 hours shoveling my way out so I could get to work the next day. We now are retired and living in Florida. Occasionally, around Christmas time someone will ask me if I miss having a “White Christmas”. My response is always the same. “If I never see snow again, it will be too soon”.

Trick we were taught in the marines…. Your body heat will keep you warmer in your sleeping bag the less clothes you keep on inside it. It radiates off the bag itself onto your skin directly while it dissipates before reaching your body again while fully clothed. We’d be in underwear only in single digit temps. We were some crayon eaters though so do you brother. Lol Keep up the great content Luke and Susie, absolutely love the channel.

Great video, but as a survival instructor I would not recommend leaving your vehicle without at least the basic gear regardless of how much experience you have or how short of a distance it was away from your vehicle, with how bad that wind was and with that snow it could have turned into a complete whiteout and you could have lost your bearings and that is never good

As always a great video, but this one really brought back some memories, not freezing cold camping, not outdoor adventures, but the Brussels sprouts story. Like you, I hate them, have since I was a kid, but your story was similar to mine. One Christmas when I was about 9 years old we had dinner and darned if there weren't Brussels sprouts on the plate, I gag at the smell let alone eating them. I couldn't do it, I tried just because my Dad told me if I didn't I would set there until I did, no playing with my toys, nothing. Everyone finished eating, I was still setting there, my brothers were all playing, I was still setting there, dishes were all most done and I was still setting there. It was agony, but I would not and could not stomach them, and even if I would have tried then, they were ice balls they were so cold, so had to be even worse. I could hear my brothers having fun, they were even playing with some of my toys as I could see from where I sat into the living room, and when I complained I was told I could be playing with them if I ate my Brussels sprouts...couldn't do it. Around 9 o'clock it was close to bedtime and I was still at the table when my grandmother, bless her soul, came out and took me by the shoulder over to the garbage can and told me to scrape the plate off. Then she said to to go play for the little time left before bed. When I went into the living room my Dad stopped me and asked if I ate my Brussels sprouts, what should I say, grandma told me to come in and play, but before I had a chance to fess up and tell him what happened, my blessed grandmother stepped into the room and as straight faced as I have ever seen anyone, said, "He cleaned his plate up". Nothing else, never said I ate them, and didn't lie, clean your plate always had meant eat everything. What could my Dad say, he couldn't question his mother, her word was gold, so I played for a half hour before bed. Years later after I was fully grown and my grandmother had passed away, we were all having a family dinner and old times were talked about and my Dad said something about Brussels sprouts and of course I said I hated them. My Dad laughed a little and said he remembered a Christmas when I was little where I was so stubborn I wouldn't eat them even to be able to play with my toys. I told him I had a confession to make, and told him what grandma did, he said he knew later but couldn't say anything, it was his mother and he would never disrespect her, but he checked the garbage and saw the Brussels sprouts. To this day I can't stand the smell of them or eat them and I am going to be 69 years old in a few days. Funny how old memories can be rekindled, hadn't thought about that in years. As Bob Hope used to sing, thanks for the memories, even bad ones can been good looking back. Sorry this is so long, but no way to tell it without being that way. Thanks for another great video.

By the time that storm got to NJ we got about a foot of snow. I spent 28 hours plowing the roads in our county and wished I was home and warm. Respect to you buddy for going out in it and camping none the less. You are the man!! S&H

This and last year have been crazy with snow, I'm 25 now and these winters we've had the most snow in my lifetime, at least if I read the local weather station reports correctly. I live in the middle part of Finland and in the past three weeks we've probably had over two feet of snow twice not counting all the other days it has snowed, the banks on sidewalks are up to my waist or chest (I'm 5 feet 8 inches according to conversion) the dump pile alone in our apartment buildings parking lot is probably 8 feet or more and who knows what is going to happen, we still have like a month until spring starts to melt snow.

Finished the second half of the video finally. Those long ones I can only watch in two parts . Our winter here in New England this year has been very cold and average snow fall for us. Life is always changing. Kids grow up and we get older. I'm facing retirement this year. Life goes by so fast. Make sure you enjoy it while you can.

Turn your bottled water upside down or any container of water so if it does partially freeze the ice will be at the bottom of the bottle so when you turn it upright it's still liquid water that will pour!

I believe a backup of some sort would be wise. In this case, boiling water on the cap stove could be an emergency heater, but be careful. Also starting the truck and opening the cab window between the front and camper while blasting the cab heater could help. I was stuck on Donner pass in a horrible Blizzard and thankfully the cab heater stayed warm and I did remember to keep the fuel tank of the truck full. Glad you made it out safe.

Someone probably already said that you should invest in a propane filter is you use a propane bottle bigger than a one pound bottle can get them on Amazon around 10.00 to 20.00 lasting about 4 20 pound propane tanks it filters out particles and dirt in gas so your buddy heater will work better and when you need it

Good on Lucas. I am cheering on for the success! Tho it is still a whole 'nother world for me hearing things like "going into debt for college". The educational systems across the world are so vastly different, it is insane. I've never had to go into debt for college. Maybe i would have if i would have had the chance to attend any specialized or famous private college or university - but i did not. I surely paid my funds for every semester, but it is not all that much. Good luck for his journey and all his new experiences and all the knowledge he will gain!

Camping trips are fun,. I enjoyed this Vid......When I was about 14 & a group of us hiked about 2miles outta town into the woods & set up my first winter camp,....lasted about 5 days over Xmas holiday......we were in cheap nylon tents....yes a bit of as disaster, but was fun non the less.....the mound of ash we left burried the 4' camp fire circle.... Next winter adventure I was about 20-21...in the dead of winter about ten miles out of town by truck then packed in gear about 100 yards by sled. We constructed a shelter from 2 political signs kinda like a saw horse & a carpet...with a kerosene heater,.. Worked real good too....temp dropped so low that night the creek top we camper near froze over.....spent about 5 days on that......I used to go fishing in central & NE Pennsylvania,....slept in the trunk of my 63 Nova ragtop ....another time we tied down a few treetops as a leantoo....had the kerosene heater beside the BIGGEST trout hole I ever did find....you could have lost a 18 Wheeler in this thing....that morning my brother produced a 18" native trout from that spot....he had pink meat like a salmon.....then there was the ...what I call Louise & Clark trip......drove to a lake 10 miles from nothin deep into the Poconos,....then rafted supplies to a sweet camp spot on the lake...3 days....What a beautiful spot that was,.... echoes bounced 5-6 times down the valley....was mind boggling....then the weekly trips to the Glenn Onoko falls at Lehigh Gorge...very cool hike....but it's been closed a few years back cuz it's a dangerous hike...too many people disrespect it (die or get hurt bad).....Enjoy your youth...keep man in video.

Luke👍👍 Another great video adventure even if you couldn't really do anything but hunker down, eat, share stories and time. Yeah that wind sucked, the one thing that can ruin an otherwise half way fun time is the wind. Too bad about the Mr Heater "Buddy", they are notorious for plugging up the inlet tube if no filter is used. Congrats to Lucas on a major decision, much success to him on his journey. Nicely done and presented, thanks. Take care, good health. See ya next time. Enjoy!

i was standing in a storm of a similar nature in winnipeg around 1993 looking through a tunnel, my parka had a tunnel hood in a safeway parking lot and i thought, what am i doing here, and i couldn't answer my own question, so i moved back to british columbia the next year, and now i want to fit my truck so i can go into the mountains, funny how things turn around.

Do you know when you are driving down the road and you are hungry you can put your food on your engine when you're driving down the road if you're driving across the country like 10,000 miles or so it's pretty cotton-picking good and it will save you time if you don't have enough money in your back pocket but as I see you are doing a very good job but I thought I'd share this with you maybe you don't know it but maybe you do it's just a suggestion I'm 68 year's old now

You gotta get serious and put up a wall tent. Lightweights like folding up in strong wind, which can be deadly with wood stove. Really amused by this video, being from Northern Ontario Canada. We just went through many days of -40 and -35s. Camping out can be quickly deadly here if you dont know what u are doing. Snow up to my waist now as well, making wood harvesting very difficult.

Hello Luke, congratulations on your son going to college. Have you thought about starting a go fund me page, to help with his college expenses. Just a suggestion. I was hoping you would make a video about Izzy. Where I live it was much colder, but less wind. We only got about 8 inches of snow. But the nice thing about it was it was powder. We usually get big heavy wet snow. So no snowball fights but the neighbors dogs loved it.
