Maine has been an incredible Adventure so far; Video coming soon! - Luke

Just goes to show the importance of knowing how to get a fire going with only materials found in the woods, yes even in the worst of conditions. Homemade firestarters are much more economical. Great honest review as always. Thank you.

Thanks for the video Luke! I have never used those types of starters when it came to building a fire. Though we dont ever hardly build an outdoor fire, in the past we always used the firestarter bricks like you use in a woodstove of fireplace. Usually made of sawdust and you just break them up and light them.

I got some when the small ones first came out. I really liked them as I do the matches also. What ever is left over if they go out has value. You can ignite it with a ferro rod, AND....... you can char it and use it like char cloth.
@MARLEYFANcbr6 жыл бұрын
Probably perfect for backyard and car camping uses. As for backcountry backpacking use, I don't think they would apply there. If you know how to use a ferro rod and natural materials, supplemented with Vaseline cottonballs that is all you need for short term backpacking trips.
@ollieb98756 жыл бұрын
I feel like you're cons are a tiny bit harsh for a reasonably cheap match, however you did say there are better options out there, did you create a video subjecting them to the same tests already or would it be an idea for the future. Thanks for all you do. Be well! ❤😀

I'll just stick with my paraffin dipped cotton balls that last about 12 minutes and cost much less to make at home
@johnganshow55366 жыл бұрын
Cotton balls, in a zip lock bag mixed with vaseline work well also. Pick them out with a stick so you don't get your hands greasy...

Budget BushKraft same here. I also use dryer lint in cardboard egg crate sections dipped in wax.
@RatandCat6 жыл бұрын
Maybe not totally water proof, but still impressive that at 6:26 it but back into flame after you dumped bottled water on it. Vaseline cover cotton balls won't do that.

It's a good backup. I try to have different types of starters with me. They should put on the package that only the tips are wind proof and stormproof. Totally agree with you.

Great video and not a bad product. It's not for me though. For Fire Starting I use a number of different items. Lighter, Fire Steel and my favorite the Flint and Steel. For Tinder I carry either Vaseline Impregnated Cotton Balls hit heavily with Magnesium Shavings, or Face Wipes impregnated with Magnesium then dipped in Wax. These are great with either the Lighter or the Fire Steel. They light easily and they burn hot enough to get wet wood going. For the Flint and Steel you have to look for a suitable Tinder and it takes practice to find it. (I do happen to carry some in my Pack if I'm out in the wet.) Ed

Thanks for the video. I just wish companies would be more truthful in advertising. But its a huge improvement over the first generation ones.

I like making a fire can I carry one in each of my loadouts, they burn hot and long. And they're reusable, you can start fires with them boil water and help keep you warm when used in conjunction with a heat sheet. And when used up you can use the tin for making char cloth
@gaylinlack7266 жыл бұрын
Though not totally stormproof they are still pretty good it looks and burn time ought to allow one, with some preparation start a fire. They are pretty compact compared to a lot of the DIY starters and a package of 5 thrown in the kit could be useful.
@hillsandhollars44366 жыл бұрын
Just marketing when they say "Waterproof & Windproof". They actually did light back up after the water and wind. I say good enough for a family camping trip and letting the kids play with fire. Maybe in a get home bag. I prefer my good ol'ferro rod and back-up Bic.

My dad just buys a box of book matches. He then drip some wax onto each book. He takes 5 or 6 books when we go camping. Cheap and easy.

Well your Dousing them with water their supposed to work in like a rain storm we’re ur able to cover them not in a level five hurricane. I still believe these are the best things to have in your bug out bag especially with the ferro rod and ground up shavings of magnesium for easy fire starting in rain

Achilles heel of UCO products is that the striker board isn't waterproof. If that gets wet your screwed. Probably be a good idea to have a box of Choglans matches handy.

Luke personally i carry a ferro and cotton balls. I cannt justifiy the price, unless you are new to the outdoors, or an emergency. Even then i start a fire with natural findings, good but not gor me.

I don't think that's what they meant by waterproof. Doesn't that usually mean you could drop them in a lake and still use them immediately after retrieval?

Dave Canterbury has a review of the UCO (pronounced "you co") matches and he drops them in water and buries them in the dirt amd they still burn.. Forget any of these ones and just get the regular giant matches.. Both products luke recently reviewed were not as good as the UCO stormproof match.

Great video, Luke ! Question: Would dipping them in wax, to cover the other end, make the water/windproof ??? Small, and inexpensive, effort on our part for an inexpensive product...which may result in a "keeper".
@fyremanjef6 жыл бұрын
Take 3 of the regular lifeboat ones, wrap in jute twine and dip in wax. That gives you a super match better than these.

Don't try this at home kids! If you want to see a truly amazing sight, bring some pine pitch up to almost a boil and pour some on those things then let cool before lighting them.
