Love love love my UGQ!!!! It was the only company that I could customize not only to my wishes but also to my needs. Being a woman who isn’t even 5 feet tall it’s hard to find bags and quilts that aren’t to long which makes them difficult to fill with body heat. The straps are great. I actually put them on so my quilt wraps around/under my pad. I’m a toss and turn sleeper and find I rarely have drafts with this. Save your pennies and invest in one

Important to understand how you sleep at home, because that is how you will want to sleep while camping, backpacking, thru hiking. I need my legs free. I can’t stand heavy blankets or tucked in bedding around the feet. So those mummy sleeping bags are a huge nope for me. It’s like being in a coffin. Yikes! I prefer quilts or double sleeping bags just so I don’t freak out about the trapped feeling. Great review, thanks.

I have a Butler Bag I use elk hunting. It is great but it's heavy! We use horses packing in to elk camp so it helps. I ordered a UGQ quilt after seeing your reviews for when I'm packing on my own back. Thank you for the honest reviews, keep up the good work. 👍

UGQ is the best in the business! I have a bandit top quilt with the 950 fill down and the hexcam pattern cost me almost 450.00 and I also have a under quilt to match and that was 400.00 both are 20 degree and I have no regrets buying them and I would never use anything els also I live in Michigan so it’s always good to support your local cottage company’s

I have long used a mummy bag as a quilt when it's too warm to zip up or breaks or it's too cold to sleep with zipper open. This system works well for me and it's cheaper. Great review. Thanks

Sounds about perfect for back of your truck camping, a remote cabin, or on a bed at home during power outages or whatnot, as well as backpacking and camping. SO nice to learn of companies that don't "fudge" on the temperature ratings. So many products claimed "comfort" ratings are vastly exaggerated as an advertising ploy. Has Susan tried this bag/quilt yet? Would love her impressions, since she's a colder sleeper, but about the same height as you. :D

you should check out some of the ultralight thru hiker setups. there are some that are full comfort and only 7 pounds, and some that get it down to under 4 pounds which is just nuts. there is a lot of overlap with thru hiking and bug out bags, survival bags or whatever you want to call it. so in my opinion its best to get the baseline necessities for a thru hike down, then add whatever survival gear which a thru hiker wouldn't carry, like maybe some snare wire, fishing gear, a gun and ammo, axe/saw bigger knife etc. Alan Kay has a pretty awesome 15 pound get home bag setup.

I ordered the Bandit Quilt about 2 years ago and while it is excellent I made the mistake of ordering the smaller size (which is now renamed Bandit youth) cause I'm a thin guy but I'm a side sleeper and I didn't fit. I then ordered the XL and it fits perfectly. If you're a side sleeper don't make the same mistake I did.

What goes unsaid about this type of product is the LACK OF A HOOD. Without a hood system, the bag can be lighter and easier to convert from quilt to sleeping bag. HOWEVER, I would need to add length to accommodate an inflatable pillow and to cover my head in cold weather... as I do in bed at home. Since so much customization is offered, I wish they had side draft tubes as an option. Check out Luke's review of the CARINTHIA DEFENCE 1 posted a few weeks back. It may be the budget alternative you are seeking. Luke has also reviewed ENLIGHTENED EQUIPMENT products.

i just got my 10F western mountaineering Versalite bag and im such a huge fan of it. i dont get all the hype about quilts, unless its one of the really lightweight ones. my bag unzips maybe like 90% leaving a small footbox, so its absolutely the best of both worlds. i can use it as a quilt if i want to, or its a thermally efficient zipped up mummy bag if its really cold. i heavily contemplated quilt vs mummy bag and the few ounces of extra weight from the sleeping bag for guaranteed warmer sleep in cold weather is worth it in my opinion. an Enlightened equipment Enigma 950 fill, 0F, long, wide, 7D inner and outer is 28 ounces. that being the super flimsy 7D one which i wouldn't get or recommend. if i were to get one it would be the 10D inner 20D outer and it weighs 31 ounces. my large 6ft6 10F mummy bag with 3 ounce overfill has a legit comfort rating of around 0f-5f, unzips to open even more than the EE quilt (which has a much longer footbox) and the sleeping bag only weighs 35 ounces. that 4 ounce difference isnt worth the lack of versatility to me, and yes you read that right, quilts are less versatile, because my mummy bag is a mummy bag or a quilt. i guess the only other variable would be cost. my mummy bag was $620 and the EE quilt ive quoted is $510, but im not worried about that little bit of cost savings for a product im using to keep me alive and ill use for the next few decades. if we are talking about summer camping, its a different story. a 50 degree quilt with all of the same stuff i mentioned is only 14.5 ounces. quilts for warm weather and mummy bags for winter or colder climates. maybe im wrong but i dont think people are climbing MT Everest and using a quilt... really the only downside (other than cost) to western mountaineering is that there is no color customization, but thats not something i care about.

@brycetheshredder
@brycetheshredder 2 жыл бұрын
That cwm400 is nice but honestly there is a huge difference in usability for those two. The way he spec’d out this hybrid quilt it could easily get him below freezing while the transition rating of the naturehike is 32. And anybody who has ever used a rated sleeping bag knows you don’t actually want to sleep in the transition rating of the bag. That being said the price difference is signifigant but you have to pay for quality/durability.

I own an Enlightened Equipment FULL quilt, not a Hybrid/Convertible quilt I know they make a 40 degree convertible bag, at about 20oz (regular/regular) for length/width that's $345 + tax...so, very similar I initially did a comparison with UGQ and EE and thought they were roughly the same, but can't remember WHY i went EE I CAN tell you My EE Quilt is a 10 degree, 850 duck fill, bag (Welcome to the colorado rockies outside of a 2 month time frame) is about 28oz and is COMFORTABLE at about 15 degrees with the right sleeping pad. I only mention this because UGQ and EE are VERY similar, both in cost, features and quality. I wont ever go back to a sleeping bag. Infact, Luke did a review on the EE Convertible quilt and called it Excellent so, regardless of UGQ or EE, moving to a quilt has been the best decision for me and my sleep system. If you need a hood, pick up a down balaclava/hat and you wont even notice!

Get a quilt bro, a regular sleeping bad would be restricting for someone like you, as you are like me. I love the UGQ quilt, never used any of my regular sleeping bags since.

For a hammock always quilts. But on the ground sleeping bag could be a safer option. There are quilts with different straps and attachments to pad but you will have to try them to know if they will prevent draft while you toss. Attaching a quilt is additional task. You can go with wide quilt to minimise risk of draft, but then it might weight as much as sleeping bag. The colder the more problematic the draft is. So, if it's just for summer camping this could become a benefit.

Once you've committed to being a avid hiker, UGQ is tried & true. #1 Forget price. It's an investment.

same is true for western mountaineering for cold weather mummy bags. price is irrelevant if your life depends on it, and its an item that will last for 20 years or so if you take care of it.

Is it possible to take 2 of these quilts , and zip them together to make one large quilt ? This may be a idea for product improvement

Sorry I am a little late joining the party, but which would you say is the better quality product the UGQ or Enlightened Equipment?

Hey Luke, how about a disclosure on the front end of the video about who paid for the product. Would be nice to know.

You must be new to the video and also didn’t see the disclaimer he pays for all of his own gear all of his reviews are unbiased,the good, and the bad. I would suggest watching a lot of his videos he’s very honest sometimes brutally so but it’s your money in this guys doing it for you at his cost. No bias

@@jasontesar7325 please point me to the disclaimer. I see that the channel is viewer supported but that doesn't make it clear that there is no company supplied equipment.

Also if you look at the video description it does say it three lines down it just takes a little bit of effort to take a look at the description, I would argue less effort then randomly blurting out a comment without context

@@jasontesar7325 it says "100% agenda free". And "fully supported by viewers". It does not say that there have been no equipment donations and/or considerations given to equipment suppliers. I'm not saying it's a dishonest or biased review but the question has never been answered.

@@jamesellsworth9673 I think you need to listen more carefully. He says he ordered it. He does NOT say he paid for it. Many companies offer "influencers" to order and test what they want. Again, not saying the review is biased or not done properly, just saying it would be nice to know who paid for it. Luke can jump in and correct us any time. How much do you think all those power banks that he tests cost? Thousands. That's tough on a budget, even for a substantial Patreon following.
