Love love love my UGQ!!!! It was the only company that I could customize not only to my wishes but also to my needs. Being a woman who isn’t even 5 feet tall it’s hard to find bags and quilts that aren’t to long which makes them difficult to fill with body heat. The straps are great. I actually put them on so my quilt wraps around/under my pad. I’m a toss and turn sleeper and find I rarely have drafts with this. Save your pennies and invest in one

Important to understand how you sleep at home, because that is how you will want to sleep while camping, backpacking, thru hiking. I need my legs free. I can’t stand heavy blankets or tucked in bedding around the feet. So those mummy sleeping bags are a huge nope for me. It’s like being in a coffin. Yikes! I prefer quilts or double sleeping bags just so I don’t freak out about the trapped feeling. Great review, thanks.

Sounds about perfect for back of your truck camping, a remote cabin, or on a bed at home during power outages or whatnot, as well as backpacking and camping. SO nice to learn of companies that don't "fudge" on the temperature ratings. So many products claimed "comfort" ratings are vastly exaggerated as an advertising ploy. Has Susan tried this bag/quilt yet? Would love her impressions, since she's a colder sleeper, but about the same height as you. :D

you should check out some of the ultralight thru hiker setups. there are some that are full comfort and only 7 pounds, and some that get it down to under 4 pounds which is just nuts. there is a lot of overlap with thru hiking and bug out bags, survival bags or whatever you want to call it. so in my opinion its best to get the baseline necessities for a thru hike down, then add whatever survival gear which a thru hiker wouldn't carry, like maybe some snare wire, fishing gear, a gun and ammo, axe/saw bigger knife etc. Alan Kay has a pretty awesome 15 pound get home bag setup.

What goes unsaid about this type of product is the LACK OF A HOOD. Without a hood system, the bag can be lighter and easier to convert from quilt to sleeping bag. HOWEVER, I would need to add length to accommodate an inflatable pillow and to cover my head in cold weather... as I do in bed at home. Since so much customization is offered, I wish they had side draft tubes as an option. Check out Luke's review of the CARINTHIA DEFENCE 1 posted a few weeks back. i just got my 10F western mountaineering Versalite bag and im such a huge fan of it. i dont get all the hype about quilts, unless its one of the really lightweight ones. my bag unzips maybe like 90% leaving a small footbox, so its absolutely the best of both worlds. i can use it as a quilt if i want to, or its a thermally efficient zipped up mummy bag if its really cold. i heavily contemplated quilt vs mummy bag and the few ounces of extra weight from the sleeping bag for guaranteed warmer sleep in cold weather is worth it in my opinion. an Enlightened equipment Enigma 950 fill, 0F, long, wide, 7D inner and outer is 28 ounces. that being the super flimsy 7D one which i wouldn't get or recommend. if i were to get one it would be the 10D inner 20D outer and it weighs 31 ounces. my large 6ft6 10F mummy bag with 3 ounce overfill has a legit comfort rating of around 0f-5f, unzips to open even more than the EE quilt (which has a much longer footbox) and the sleeping bag only weighs 35 ounces. that 4 ounce difference isnt worth the lack of versatility to me, and yes you read that right, quilts are less versatile, because my mummy bag is a mummy bag or a quilt. i guess the only other variable would be cost. my mummy bag was $620 and the EE quilt ive quoted is $510, but im not worried about that little bit of cost savings for a product im using to keep me alive and ill use for the next few decades. if we are talking about summer camping, its a different story. a 50 degree quilt with all of the same stuff i mentioned is only 14.5 ounces. quilts for warm weather and mummy bags for winter or colder climates. maybe im wrong but i dont think people are climbing MT Everest and using a quilt... really the only downside (other than cost) to western mountaineering is that there is no color customization, but thats not something i care about.

@brycetheshredder2 жыл бұрын
That cwm400 is nice but honestly there is a huge difference in usability for those two. The way he spec’d out this hybrid quilt it could easily get him below freezing while the transition rating of the naturehike is 32. And anybody who has ever used a rated sleeping bag knows you don’t actually want to sleep in the transition rating of the bag. That being said the price difference is signifigant but you have to pay for quality/durability.

I own an Enlightened Equipment FULL quilt, not a Hybrid/Convertible quilt I know they make a 40 degree convertible bag, at about 20oz (regular/regular) for length/width that's $345 + tax...so, very similar I initially did a comparison with UGQ and EE and thought they were roughly the same, but can't remember WHY i went EE I CAN tell you My EE Quilt is a 10 degree, 850 duck fill, bag (Welcome to the colorado rockies outside of a 2 month time frame) is about 28oz and is COMFORTABLE at about 15 degrees with the right sleeping pad. I only mention this because UGQ and EE are VERY similar, both in cost, features and quality. I wont ever go back to a sleeping bag. Infact, Luke did a review on the EE Convertible quilt and called it Excellent so, regardless of UGQ or EE, moving to a quilt has been the best decision for me and my sleep system. @wildhike3 жыл бұрын
For a hammock always quilts. But on the ground sleeping bag could be a safer option. There are quilts with different straps and attachments to pad but you will have to try them to know if they will prevent draft while you toss. Attaching a quilt is additional task. You can go with wide quilt to minimise risk of draft, but then it might weight as much as sleeping bag. The colder the more problematic the draft is. So, if it's just for summer camping this could become a benefit.
