TheOutdoorGearReview . Luke, so here goes.... for the weight it's to leak prone as u sed... the poles are in a bad spot as far as entry is concerned. It appears not to pitch well..to baggy. Honestly I don't see any redeeming qualities in it. My question is why does the military allow such piss poor quality in some gear and yet such a high standard in others..the knife standard is quite acceptable ect.

Yep, too heavy and too many leaks. Looks ridiculously strong, though. Might make a good base camp gear dump shed for a large group, one that you leave up all winter. Much outdoor gear is already water resistant and only needs basic shelter from wind blown rain and snow. It would definitely provide that level of protection. But then again, one of those monster heavy duty WalMart tarps would also work at half the price while being twice as big.

It already weighs too much. Having to add an inner mesh tent is just plain crazy. Plus, that doesn't fix the built in water leaks. Just not good for camping unless it's very cold and dry. Tarp and bivy are better by far.

I bought a "new" one in desert camo from the same year (1995). I only use it close to a vehicle, as it's too big to take with you. This is a motorized infantry model, same with the Dutch M90 sleeping bag. I use it for week long scout camps, astronomy night and mountain camping (2000m / 6500ft) where the weather can change unexpectedly at 3am. The advantages: it's thick cotton, you can stitch things and then waterproof the stitches with seamgrip. It opens up possibilities for customization, something I never thought doing in Silicon-Nylon tents because I'm so afraid to rip them. So I totally agree on the bug net, I'm working to add one on mine. I added a ridge-line inside from one bar to an other to hang things like lamps. I have also added flaps to cover the holes from the outside, especially where the 3 zippers meet. Because it's cotton you are also supposed to treat it with nixwax cotton from time to time and accept that it will always be cold and moist to the touch in the mornings because it will absorb the water from outside and the vapor from your body/breath. But down here in the south of France this tent is also a fantastic shelter against the strong sun we have. Open all doors and you have a great afternoon shelter to take a nap. Here cotton shows its fantastic versatility and insulating that thin light tents do not have. And when the strong mountain wind blows, I'm much warmer and safer in this thing than my friend in his costly MSR Hubba Hubba tent. He's got side winds coming into his tent and he won't use it at low temperature. I use mine all year round, especially close to freezing point. As you pointed out, it's good for winter. So if I love cotton then why not buy a civilian model? I would love to, but a civilian cotton tent here costs between 250 - 400 euros and this one can be bought in Holland from 35 euros (xmilitarystore) . In the end this tent is one of the few affordable options for those who want a cotton tent. An other option is the Polish cape tent, it's a tipi formed with two pelerina capes. Very popular with the bushcrafting crowd and very cosy.

FYI. This tent was used in the Dutch army _not_ only by the special forces but by the entire army of The Netherlands from the 90's to I believe around 2010-ish. They are extremely heavy but spacious. You could zip two of them together so you'd have a 2 person tent and sleep alongside your buddy. (In The Netherlands we also use the buddy system.) The reason why the leaked so much is mostly overuse and bad care. Nowaday's they are no longer in use. The Dutch army now uses a bivy tent wich is much smaller and lighter.

This is a great tent for the price and is as sturdy as a rock. I've used it when it's been raining a lot and the only water I encountered was from my boots when I came back inside. As you say, it's a soldiers tent, so don't expect bells and whistles. And yes, it's too heavy to carry far. What's more, you could always stuff a bug net in if needed. I absolutely love mine, I'll be using it more in the winter and snow. Atb phil

You have no clue. Let me explain. (I am Dutch) 1. It is heavy. So the soldiers get a workout and be strong! 2. Sand. If you need a beach for D-Day. And if you get killed in rocky terrain the have something to bury you with. 3. We make bug soup. Protein! 4. It leaks so you don't waste time finding a bath. 5. The holes are to stick the barrel of your gun though and you don't have get out of your nice warm sleeping bag when the enemy attacks. Only con is the camo. It should have a print of a windmill on it so they can't spot your in between the other windmills.

First of all, this is not a "special forces" tent, it's a former regular issue tent. Nowadays dutch forces often just use their poncho's to create a shelter. You have to treat these tent's with a waterproofing agent, i always managed to keep the insides completely dry. Great tents but pretty heavy indeed!

You did make mistakes, 3:27 you can see just below the zipper to which you point is a loop hole. The pole goes trough there and not free standing. Also the pins on 2:43 need to be pushed down in the ground with either a rubber hammer or your foot. Same goes for the pins that hold down the bottom of the tent. As it stands now, it will be taken down by the wind or even with heavy rainfall. The tent was not designed to house a pretty pink princes snowflake, it was designed to be good enough while being strong and durable. It is a tent for soldiers, not pussies. Sorry for my words, but it's the honest truth. The temperature in the Netherlands is often cooler then in the US but in winter less cold. The tent there for is not based up on US climates nor tropical or very cold climates, it wasn't even based on desert conditions. It's a place to sleep in, store your personal belongings and that's about it.

i noticed some assembly mistakes and some misadjustments. have you checked the 'operator manual' or asked some dutch guy how to assembly that? for exemple: - those plastic rubber loops in the botom that you staked on the ground seems to be used for some other purpose like pass the rope of the roof and lift the corner of the ground. - there is a velcro in the bottom (near the 'T' of the zipper) where the stake might be straped to make the sides more vertical and out of the ground. - the roof seem to be stretched too much outward. if you pass the roof rope inside the rubery-loops and stake it closer it might show better water resistance and geometry.)

SF sleep in the rain. or dug-out forward position. 4. we also have duct tape in europe 5 If you're afraid of spiders dont't go camping. 6. They cost between 27 and 50 Euro's 7. We prefer to return to FOB, not sleep in tents without a protective perimeter. I give this review over all a C+, No consideration how this is used, the fact its 22y old and you are afraid of 25ml of water and spiders.

I don't know. I'm liking that heavy duty, rubberized bath tub floor, having been forced to set up a few tents in the mud before. I even had to pitch two shelter halves in the mud once. Not fun. It's almost like the designer had that first and foremost in mind.

I use this tent all the time. You need to use Fabsil gold to reproof the tent. I was in a 13hr torrential down storm in Scotland and woke up to a small river running under the tent. The bathtub base didn’t let a drop in but I had some water ingress from the holes. Easily sorted with a towel. The river level raised to our tents and it was a nightmare but the tent allowed me to sleep all night with no issues.

This tent is bombproof and improves the more often you get it wet as the canvas weave expands. All those zip points are easy to cover with a flap of cheap tarp on the outside. The big advantage of them is that they can be used a little like a baker tent is used because it's canvas and because you can open up an entire side to the fire. Of course there are limitations, I mean, these things cost around £35 in the UK which is ridiculously cheap. Use them, abuse them, they'll still come out the other side laughing. As for bugs........ They're not really intended for use outside northern Europe which is why they have no bug net. We don't get too many big bugs that are a problem in northern Europe.

This tent is very popular in The Netherlands. I sold one on a second hand website. Even when I mentioned that the tent is far from waterproof and I gave them a link to this movie, people still were determent to buy it. Some of the bidders told me that they wanted to use the tent for stealth / wild camping. Eventually I sold it to a guy who wanted to buy it because of his good experiences in the Dutch army. A guy who served with the Dutch commandos who sold me some army surplus items told me that they only used this tent on bigger camp sites. Out in the field they used the hooped bivi bag. And preferably the double hooped bivi bag.

Hi as a follow up with this tent and as I said earlier I've know finished some modifications for this tent that was cheap. Firstly the zips at the ends can simply be sewed up with a sewing machine, as long as you keep the Zips on the outside. Secondly you can attach OD green or another canvas strip to cover the zip's from either side facing downwards covering the zips. With regards to the vertical zip sewed on each side to the left of zip from the top vents. I'm happy to say that I've tested the tent and nothing leaks, this was in a huge thunder storm that dumped a lot of rain on the tent. So with a little bit of time and some sewing which was cheap the tent has worked out well. I do however struggle with carrying the weight of it over long distances. But I just wanted to let you know I've had success. Thanks again. Drew.

I have two of these and as with much of the surplus stuff I buy, some minor stitch work had to be undertaken and that was the holes gone. Once that was done and I reproofed it with some canvas tent seal it became an astounding tent, its warm in the UK winter its plenty big enough for 1 man and his kit, it is a bit of a lump to carry as with most canvas offerings, taking a little extra time to get the pegs in the right place meant that it was very waterproof, the price difference here in the UK must be down to shipping costs because I got mine for £25 delivered. I do think that no bug net is a nightmare because with all the holes fixed when a bug gets in it feasts on you all night because its so warm that you often sleep outside your bag and the bug cannot get out..

Not a fair test to the tent at all for one its a cavas tent take the extra few minutes to taught the canvas to let the rain run off and not puddle.water gathers on the creased canvas and slowly runs down the canvas getting the chance to find holes when taught it runs off the end not getting a chance to find holes.also the poles need to be Velcro on to the groung sheet thats what the velcro is for attached to the groung sheet it holds the canvas tight to the pole with the zips pressed up tight to the pole stopping water entering in to the zip the way u have set it up the wind and rain is blowing the side away from the pole allowing the rain to come inside the tent sorry but any poorly set up tent is going to leak tension canvas and secure poles with the velcro provided and defiantly will not leak like this poorly set up tent

These were quite cheap as surplus tents in the UK a few years ago. They have a very limited use and several people I know that still use them (most have abandoned them or given them to the kids for garden camping) tend to use them for base camp storage as they are sturdy and ideal for throwing bulky items in etc.

The lowest bidder that meets the requirements, that is. Very important difference. And with all those zippers, this is probably not cheap to make. So while the workmanship, I'm sure, is excellent, the idea behind it is failed. It tries to be too many things at once. Whose failure is that? The committee that designed it.

You kinda need to set it up right. You didn't put the poles where they belonged on this type of tent, the poles go inside the bottom and fill the zipper hole. Regardless it's a military tent meant to be durable and last being banged around and guys not giving on crap about. Someone that takes care of their equipment should definitely not look at mil surplus. Remember military buys things for decades or more of service of men that don't give ***** about the military's stuff.

I have one of these. When put up properly, it was the only tent to not have leaked like a sieve when all the modern ones were filled bathtubs in a heavy downpour. Nice and cozy. Definitely not two man, you'd struggle to get your gear in along with you. Bloody heavy for the size for sure. It's a very warm tent for winter.

sorry your wallmart special doesnt qualify.. gl on finding a tent of that size for 90$ that is all climate... and if you didnt notice he set the tent up in a gully its going to get wet... there is no such thing as a waterproof tent anyone who tells you that is selling something... even waterproof treated nylon or other synthetic fabrics moment you touch the inside of it. game over... short of 100% plastic/rubber liner/wall no tent ever is waterproof and poor placement isnt a excuse. the tent had very minimal dmg, its used surplus for $90 you cant say thats a fail. its not survival gear. its deployment gear...so crying about the weight is also bullshit thats like crying about a canvass wall tent is heavy... DERP.

Not a fair test. 1. It was made for colder climate 2. The zip ends on the corners are meant to be outside not in the tent. 2. The poles secure on the tabs on base of bath tub thus sealing the hole.as the corners push out You wouldn't have water in the corners 3. You didnt season the tent prior use 4. I've never seen bullets inside of surplus gear. PS I'm ex military. As I say Norway a fair test mines never jeaked and here in the UK we have more rain.

For a similar price, I recently bought a Vango tent with roughly two times the internal space and 2/3 the weight. I've not been out in wet weather (yet) but there are no obvious holes like in this one. The two advantages this Dutch tent has are really substantial poles and a relatively fast pitching time. My current one take me a leisurely ~20 minutes when I'm in no hurry, but that's working solo rather than with any help. Those Dutch poles aint gonna bend or split in a hurry. My previous Vango tent had the poles split on me which it a big part of why I retired it and got a new one of a different design.

I'm not sure what the problem is. The holes aren't a flaw, they're a feature. How many tents function as both a shelter AND a water catchment? And don't forget the benefit of 15 lbs. Throw away your P90X and just carry the tent around. What a gem!

mines been set up out side for 6 weeks and no leaks at all in an English winter.. ice, hail, rain -10. zip tags should be pushed through to hang outside, to drip water away. also your end guys were too long and should be out at 45 dgs. this tensions the canvas and affords greater over hang cover. the poles are secured at the base by velcro straps, lifting the ground sheet higher and pulling the 3 zippers in tighter. its not a tabbing tent, but more a base camp or for a transport/service crew. otherwise like the Brits, use a tarp or ponch or two rather than hump 15lbs of soggy canvas around. a bug mesh would benefit.

Love the vids bro. I use this tent a lot but then I do wild camp in Scotland. It’s a canvas tent and you must use Fabsil gold periodically to re-proof it otherwise it will leak in. On our last outing we caught the tail end of a hurricane and it performed excellently and I’m talking torrential rain for 14 hours solid also the bathtub bottom is completely waterproof as I woke up with a mini river running under the tent and I never even noticed until I got out when the rain died off around 10am. I camp in big woodland so the rain comes straight down which makes the holes irrelevant and the camo is amazing in that environment. The benefits of this tent over a lighter tent are definitely when you cold camp, no bugs really not that bugs in the uk are a big problem and this tent holds the heat brilliantly. This tent is awesome for a good nights sleep as it keeps the light out far better than a light tent. However you can’t carry this tent far so car camping is the way forward not long mountain trekking. Hope this helps someone, thanks.

what part of used military surplus didnt you comprehend? and are you clueless honestly at the prices of 4 season tents? go price a 2man 4 season at REI... then say $90 wasnt worth it... *facepalms* and used surplus as he clearly stated at the beginning is a crap shoot on what you get.... he could got one in pristine condition or even worse then that. $90 for that tent a good deal user operator error by setting a tent up in a gully where water going to pool up isnt a reason to consider that tent a fail.

@RV-ardvark 6 жыл бұрын
Syc holic, what part of 'better options' didn't YOU understand? Go check out Alps brand tents before you show your ignorance to the world. Do you really consider that "Dutch" tent a 4 season tent? Are you deaf or just too stupid to understand the review when he said that he would not use that tent during the warmer months because of poor ventilation. Honestly, you must have a single digit IQ or you are an REI sales person if you think that tents are only available at REI. Did you actually watch the video or do you just have a 2 second memory retention? The tent was not set up in a gully which caused the water to pool up inside the tent. That was caused by leakage, as explained in the video, and the natural terrain found in any reasonable camp site. Have you actually ever been camping? Please crawl back under the bridge and play with the other trolls there.

what part of that dont you understand or you deaf or stupid? when you finally come up with a single valid point why $90 for a survival 2man 4season tent is not worth the money you going to spend then talk otherwise just stfu trollphail cuz you not even on topic STILL...
@RV-ardvark
@RV-ardvark 6 жыл бұрын
Obviously, you are too ignorant to understand that I did not say that a $90 survival tent is worth the money spent on it. I said that this particular tent is not worth any money spent on it. Did you check out the alternatives out there? Of course not. That would be the intelligent thing to do. Even a cheap Eureka tent is better than this one. So, I have mentioned 2 alternatives so far and you have obviously ignored researching them as an alternative. In addition, you mentioned that this tent is also a surplus tent at this price. I can sell you a vintage North Face VE25 4 season, 3 person tent for less. This tent, and others that can be found used, are orders of magnitude better than this military surplus tent. If you can not find my "point" in this discussion, then you are just lost. I find it curious why you are so adamant about defending this tent. Have you purchased one and bragged about how well it works to your friends? BTW, try speaking/writing in complete sentences with proper grammar and punctuation when you post something in public. You will find that it helps your credibility with the public and later in your professional life, when you grow up.

I got mine on Saturday. Stunk with mold n mildew. BUT...the worst part is mine was moth eaten. From the inside, it looks like it was shot with a shotgun with bird shot. I thought about returning it, but I don't know if I'd get a better one. Also, if it had been cheaper, I probably wouldn't care. Gonna hang onto it just for collection. Mine came from Sportsman's guide. I agree about this being a great cool or Cold weather setup. Thought about a second tent hooked up and setting it up with a stove jack & zip out section of the floor. So one for stove/gear & one for sleeping.

I've bought myself one. I really like this tent I've just bought another one for my son. Yer they are heavy tent. But what I liked was they don't rattle in the wind. They are darker inside on a night. Seems and feels warmer inside. I've not had a downpour test yet, but held up to a light rain. I did notice the gap where the 3 zips meet. I just put my bottle of pop in front just to block it a bit. Cant wait to see how they join up.........

Like your review. Looks like a decent tent shortcomings aside. Sometimes heavy canvas and to a degree lack of zippers/screening is not always an issue. I recently purchased a brand new US "Shelter Half" tent for $20 and to be honest I prefer it to just about every pup tent I've used. (In spite of the lack of floor or mesh and zippers). When wet it seems to shed the rain well and I sleep very well in it. (Nice and dark inside and does not make much noise in the wind). Might not be good in the deep south or tropics where insects sting, but here not bad at all.

Hi there, FYI; That is just a standard Dutch military tent from the nineties! It was made in the same year I entered the service (1994) and I had that tent too. Maybe just slept in it during one exercise! After that just in the sleeping bag with a waterproof outer liner. (those sleepingbags were great btw!) So it is not SF! Even more, at around 1996/97, when I bought my Hilleberg Nammatj 3GT tent, Dutch commando's received new tents from Hilleberg as I once read somewhere. I don't know whether it was a pilot or something. I never saw them In real live. It was a one person tent with special custom khaki colors. The story had a photo with it containing three of those tents on a small hill covered with grass and some trees on top. Don't know the type anymore. That story was the reason I started to look at Hilleberg! Before I was orientating at TNF tents. I still have the nammatj until this day, with an extra door from the start. Oh, and that zipper end. When you place it on the outside instead of the inside, the water will drip to the outside instead of into the tent! But it is not a great tent! Imagine taking this with you, that wet on a campaign! Wet it is very heavy, plus chances are you get fungus growth inside and it stay damp all the way!

OMG! Luke you tossed that tent to the ground and it made that high decibel THUD! that was the deciding factor not to even consider buying. Then came the holes, no bug netting and $90 made it laughable. I can't imagine having to use a tarp in addition to paying 90 bucks. Great review, Luke! God, I love sleeping outdoors in thunder storms...with a good shelter system. Just a side note, Luke, to resolve the issue of bug netting especially when tarp camping, the "Friendly Swede" is an incredible kit for $15 on Amazon and weighs a mere 5 oz in its stuff sack. I stealth camped next to a creek and the bug population was like metro city...thick. Not one insect, snake or small critter got into my bed area and I was able to enjoy the moon reflecting off the water and the stars glowing in the sky; and a very restful sleep.
