Those were the days when fan snail mail was still around! That is the absolute most disgusting moment in Premier League history for me. The way Arsenal players treated Ruud was disgusting in general, but that moment with Keown screaming in his face... It was horrible to watch. I don't think I can personally ever forgive Keown for that one moment. To have to watch his analysis for years on Match Of The Day after he retired from playing as well - I hated it 😂 I'm assuming by now Martin Keown has mentioned it in an autobiography by now. I'd love to know how he feels about it retrospectively - if he is ashamed of how he behaved, or if it was just what he felt like he needed to do to get to Ruud and have no regrets about it.

@@davewebster689 you truly are a flower petal. By the way, what about Roy Keane’s tackle on Haaland? Were you disgusted by that? There have been many shameful things take place in prem football. I hate how light the ball has got since that age . I was watching some premier league from about 1994 and the way the play builds up is amazing to see . The players can actually control the ball and do things with it and be creative all across the pitch . These days it just is like pin ball in the premier league . Players hardly ever shoot as the ball goes all over the show the managers know this and tell them to pass it in instead. Miss this era also . I challenge anyone to look how the ball has changed . And also don’t need the bit about heading and dementia it’s not boxing or the most deadly sport in the world statically horse racing. Just think the English premier league needs to slow down and the game in general. No zidane or Ronaldinho type players who can manipulate the ball because it just pings off your foot all the time . We are being robbed of our beautiful game . Sorry about my hangover rant .

When Ruud was talking about his beginnings, how he started playing on the streets and with the older kids, I remembered that's exactly how Cristiano started too! He played with 16, 17, 18 year-olds already in Madeira, and was constantly kicking ball and training on Maderia's twisted roads that meander between volcanic mountains. This is the type of old-school, creative, and tough learning process that most talented and iconic footballers have gone through, and unfortunately, it's disappearing now. Today, kids mainly practice from a young age, in well-equipped youth academies, as Ruud mentioned, where everything is organized so that it goes 'smoothly', but the irony is, that sometimes this type of environment is 'too perfect' and 'too smooth', and doesn't allow kids to encounter real difficulties on their way, and consequently, doesn't teach them how to overcome these obstacles. It doesn't help develop a good, sporty, strong mentality. Learning on the street is much harder, and requires hard work, character, and creativity from the beginning because you don't have the equipment or the professional help, you only have your own body& brain, and the street. It's better for footballing development than the academy, skill-wise and mentality-wise. This is exactly why the greatest geniuses and the most iconic legends in the history of football, were always street footballers, coming from street culture. Nowadays we simply produce perfect robots in academies, but rarely the interesting, creative characters and geniuses that street football gave us!

Yeah he's unlucky he doesn't make the list of so many ManUtd players who were managed by Ferguson who achieved at least 2 out of the following 3 feats, win back-to-back PL's, win FAcup, win ChampionsLeague. He got one but it's only the likes of Berbatov, JohnnyEvans & very few others who were managed by Ferguson for at least 4 years who didn't get any of those because v.Nistelrooy didn't put a foot wrong his numbers were great. He won ManUtd the PL in 2002/03 he scored loads of ChampionsLeague goals so he deserved to win that. Berbatov only scored in 3 CL games in his whole ManUtd career in a better squad (none in knockouts) and only scored ONE goal vs a Top5 team in domestic major competitions so deserves to be seen as a flop but v.Nistelrooy should be in the list alongside the so many names who won 2 or 3 of those 3 feats I counted near 50 players off the top of my head but at least he didn't get zero which is a very small group particularly if they were there at least 4 years under Ferguson like Berbaflop was and people over exaggerate saying Berba won ManUtd 2010/11 PL no he didn't lol a quarter of his whole season's tally came in 1 home game ManUtd win without his goals anyway. The likes of v.Nistelrooy 02/03, C.Ronaldo 07/08, v.Persie 12/13 ACTUALLY did because they scored in loads of games vs all types of teams. Of course they also needed a team Scholes scored 20 in all comps 02/03, Rooney, Tevez etc...were very important 07/08, Rooney, Hernandez etc...12/13 were important but 10/11 Hernandez was ManUtd's most important forward and the reason why Berba was left out of the CL final squad 2011 other than costing ManUtd yet another FAcup was because he went 3 whole years without a CL goal from late 2008 to late 2011 and the other 3 strikers Rooney, Hernandez & even MichaelOwen had scored more recently than Berba who's last goal was Matchday 32/38 and even in CL all 3 had scored at least 4 CL goals for ManUtd since Berba's last CL goal (Rooney scored way more than 4 since Berba's last).

Holds a special place in my heart this man. The one player who got me into football, his ability, his sharpness, his ruthlessness, all of it was so inspiring for me as a young teenager growing up - made me fall in love with the sport. School banter with Arsenal fans was iconic

I love how as soon as Sir Bobby is brought up they’re both so happy. Shows the great positive impact he had on football & specifically footballers.

Ruud was an absolute monster, and a nightmare for opposing defenses. All he needed was a sniff of an opportunity 🤘 What an era. Great interview as always.

Shame that I'm too young to remember Ruud at United but watching highlights n stuff makes me understand how great he was as a striker✅✅

As an Arsenal fan I must confess he was awesome in front of goal especially inside the box and if he was inside the 6 yard box he’s guarantee get on the end of the ball and score. His record at United was unreal.

Unbelievable player, so happy when he left united as I'm a Chelsea fan! Comes across as extremely intelligent man too, top class all round

Killer on the pitch, genuine and humble person outside of it. Really love RVN❤

I love to get the inside story of what went on behind the scenes and the public gaze and to really get an appreciation of the individuals’ innermost thoughts. Ruud was a true idol to United fans like me but watching games and highlight reels only lets you in on a small percentage of their lives in football. Having watched this brilliantly delivered episode, I have even more respect for Ruud, Gary, Sir Alex Sir Bobby for what they did and for who they are/were as real people. Fantastic work!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy these interviews, as a Salford lad and Man U supporter all my life I just love the insights of the football world, especially from ex Man U players. Please carry on with them Gary, they are in fact oral histories and should be documented and treasured!

Never heard a Salford lad say "Man U" before. I agree with you on the oral history thing though.

This is genuinely my favourite interview from The Overlap. So well spoken and such a great mind for football and sheer knowledge of the game. Absolute legend! He was the first Utd striker I remember fully (late 90s baby) and to see him take his skills into management is amazing. Big up Nev for the insightful questions as well 🔴⚪️⚫️

Now we just need Martin Keown next to talk about THAT penalty, and what went through his mind. Those were the times. Rivalries nowadays are not the same, just too much respect.

You could hardly call them rivalries these days. Way too sanitised

This is an excellent interview. The kind of interview that would make me want this man to be the coach/manager of my son. Understanding someone's growth is truly invaluable. Excellent work!!!

I hope Sir Alex see's this, and all the other Overlap interviews, to see and hear his lads telling old stories and sharing memories. Proud to have watched Neville, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham, Keane, van Nistelrooy and co at OT. Best team in the world.

My favourite ever United player. Not even close. We’ve never had a striker like him in my lifetime.

Thanks Gary for that absolutely brilliant interview. I've been a united fan all my life and like you couldn't believe how good he was as a striker but to get real insights to the man that is Ruud Van Nistelrooy and the stories from the dressing room that came with it made it one of the best hours I have spent watching TV recently. Big Up to you both!! Russ

So great to see Gary and Ruud together. I think he´s the best striker ever. When a goalkeeper used to have a nightmare, Ruud was there as the main character.

That was a nice interview wasn't it. Rudd was so damn calm and articulate...somehow I didn't expect that! He must have grown so much in the years since retiring. Amazing.

This really was a fascinating watch. So reflective about his past and how his perspectives have changed. Favourite bit was right at the end when he answered “my ambitions lives here”. PSV have a top guy running their club
