Absolutely. Especially as an artist. There has to be a point you’re satisfied enough. Because there’s more to do, another project, another idea. You have to do the next thing. I’m an artist and I have to always have that point where I can’t dwell on perfecting something and have to decide it’s time to keep things moving. I can only imagine as a beginner film maker that lands some backing and you have a few hundred thousand dollars of investors money tied up and you have a vision but the reality is it’s not going to be how you imagine it. Get it as close as you can and let it ride.

It was only last week that I thought of the best 40th birthday present: to make my own feature film. I have the right script written 20 years ago by myself and the time feels right. Ohhh... tell me about it. I wrote a book and proofread and edited it countless times. I was in my head, thinking too much about "Maybe I dont want people thinking XYZ about me with this line/description/paragraph/etc." Yet now that I go back and read it, it seems so... sterile and sanitized. It doesnt seem like a book by me, but more so what someone thinks a book should be like, yet completely missing the mark. That rawness after I was done writing it gave it power, it gave me a "voice." At point in the beginning of that process, one needs to just set it aside and leave it for the next guy in the chain. Kind of like when I would record music and sit there for hours, making sure I got my guitar right when recording it. Then all the processing, levels, plugins, etc... it just burned me out on music as a whole for a long time.

I agree, studios can't afford to continue to lose 100's of millions on big budget movies. Very few films have made great ROI since the pandemic. "Everything, Everywhere, all at once" should be the template. It cost $14-25 million to produce, it made over $143 million at the box office, was loved by critics, and killed it at award shows.

I accidently killed my 6 month old kitten when I was 8, shut a car door on her, and sat in horror as she bled out in my hands. My mom and dad consoled me while they cleaned me up. But I didn't really snap out of my head till we sat down to watch a movie that night. My parents put on Jay and Silent Bob Strike back, and within minutes, I was laughing again. I've had friends or acquaintances talk bad about him because of politics or something they didn't like in a new movie, and I never really understood that. Seperate the art from the artist. You're not going to see eye to eye with every person on every topic. I digress. Kevins movies helped me out beyond just a bad day. They introduced me to comedy as a medicine, and without that, I wouldn't have made it through later years in my life. He's a good dude, and I wish younger me was able to listen to podcasts like this. Parasocial or not, the art and content people put their soul into is felt deeply by some.

Wow!!!! It's awesome to see that Kevin Smith and I have similar philosophies to directing(I'm a TV animation director). I'm always saying to my crew "We're making cartoons, let's have fun with it!" The best complement I've ever received was "You've made me feel a lot less stressed since taking over the team." It's all I strive for with my crew. I love making TV shows and want to make them for a long, long time, and I want everyone else who loves making them want to make them a long, long time as well. Pick your one or two moments and go to town on those, but have fun doing it!

Going into my first feature film Pro-Black Sheep, after some years of shorts and an episodic drama, I went with the "good enough" attitude. It opens doors. Kevin Smith isn’t lying. My mistake afterward was trying for perfection, casting name actors, etc. Back then, all you had were film festivals, theatrical distribution, and DVD/Cable. So, your film had to be good, which is technically better than good enough. Now, film festivals and theatrical are irrelevant with streaming services. So, you can make good enough and get paid while finding your audience. Good enough is the way to go. Kevin Smith figured this out a long time ago and stuck with it.

Making a good movie doesn't have to be miserable - you can have a good time AND make a good movie AND expect excellence from people. Plenty of people in the industry care deeply about their artistry and want to do great work, not just show up and "have fun". Sometimes you have to push people to give their best, to take their craft to another level, even if it's uncomfortable in the moment.

I remember when my brother rented Clerks on VHS at Blockbuster. I was like "what the hell is this black and white crap you got!?" Then I watched it. It changed me and showed me I could make movies. He is my number 1 inspiration for filmmaking. Sure there's other great filmmakers. Sure Kev gets crap (from the assholes he's talking about here, who don't make their own movies but criticize everyone elses). But he showed me I could do it too. I work in medical animation, which of course is not making Hollywood movies... but the "good enough" tip is very important. There's a fine line between perfect and good enough and staying on the good enough side will give you almost the same quality but allow you to actually finish the project. I just worked with a client who wanted to spit-shine every fucking pixel in the video and complain about things they were looking at when the video was paused and it made the process brutal without adding too much to the final quality. Perfect is the enemy of good enough. And you know what? I'm sure Christopher Nolan is well aware of his pursuit of perfection but also appreciates what Smith is saying about the subject.

Kevin spitting facts. One of the most creative movies I ever saw was a 20min animation called World Of Tomorrow. I accidentally found it trying to search up Edge Of Tomorrow and decided to give it a watch. 20min animation about a kid drawing and it BLEW ME AWAY. That movie broke all the rules and still was great. The Raid: Redemption for example. Micro budget film, they broke all the rules of Jackie Chan films, and you can see the MASSIVE influence that movie had.

Kevin has partly the right approach with trying to keep things enjoyable on set. The off part is how he convinced himself that trying to get the best creatively has to bring drama on and off camera, must be serious, and can’t be a good time. Acknowledging at #1 his talent level is key, but he’s had enough time watching and making movies to not improve or ever strive for your good or best. The greats learn from the greats. This seems like getting success and praise from not trying to be great resolved him to “I can just do this” which has always been noticeable and he is confirming here.

After my second feature, working with someone who made me feel like shit throughout - I decided I had to move on even if it meant I never made another film. Fortunately I was able to, and I was able to make it my way...and it started up an entirely new path for me where I can enjoy the process (as much as I can). But a big part of that revelation was a podcast with Kevin where he told a story about shooting a feature with a college crew and how hard they were on themselves and he was like "it's just a movie". Just enjoy it. Have fun.

Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, J&SBSB, Red State, and Tusk are undeniably great comedies for me, with RS and Tusk being more on the dark comedy horror. He’s not everyone favorite but to me he is one of the best low budget filmmakers of the last 30 years, possibly of all time. To have 7 cult classics is crazy, to have a cult classic in 3 decades, one of which is regarded as one of movies that exploded the 90s Indie renaissance, and one is regarded as one of the most off putting and physically challenging horror films featuring vivisection and an uncredited Jonny Depp cameo is truly phenomenal.

This is what i used to love about Kevin. I hope he gets further away from politicizing things and trying to be part of the culture war. No one wants that from the guy. When he’s being earnest and charming he has a lot of shit to say, some of it is worth listening to :)

Damn I needed to hear this. Most of the time that first take is the best, yet for some reason you end up doing 30. Perfectionism is sort of an ego thing and if you're not careful, years will go by and you will have produced nothing, all to protect your ego and fear of not being perfect.

Kevin Smith always has inspiring words for both film makers and creatives in general, and I appreciate that. But man....he leaves NO gaps for others. I remember being shocked that he's actually a pretty good interviewer when he's in that mode, because otherwise he never stops talking. Hahah. Like his special where he had a Q&A and like only 2 questions were asked because 1 question took like a 45 minutes response. Still love his rambly ass though.
