I have always used this technique... Mostly cause I couldn't afford a bunch of washes or inks, so I just used a staining technique like this as a substitute.... And even til this day, this is my go to technique instead of inks, washes or any other shading ... Awesome video!

To be honest, it looks more like glazing when you trying to paint purple recesses, but i guess its just a matter of how we used to call things. Thanks for a video, its sometimes great to try out new messy way to paint minis.

I tend to do this with very rusty things to build up a great variety of colors in the rust. However for rust i obviously don't place highlights in normal places but do some of the "washes"/layers as stippling or spattering.

A very fine video! Good technique for model painting. Great for organic materials on models. Also great with paint brands that are overly thin, out of the pot/bottle. Personally I dont use water to make the paint stain: tap water is too harsh, and jugs of distilled water costs $$. But alittle distilled water, some medium, and touch of flowaid or dishsoap, and can make a thinner for same effects!

Hey Doc, You use heavy skin tone a lot by Vallejo, Have you happen to have noticed a change in the color of it recently? I have one bottle, that’s my oldest and it’s like the one you have in your video, But I just got two new bottles from The shop and they are much more Rudy in color also when they separate instead of getting a green separation like my old ones it has a more peachy color when separated. Just curious if you have also notice this. If I could post a picture I could. Also got them from 2 different shops cause first I thought it was a bad batch. *Update!!!! On 3/20/22 my heavy skin tone looks like 2 different colors however on the pallet I can’t tell, be this a lesson, Never compare colors from in the pot put it down on your pallet, still it’s 98% similar Must’ve been that my old pot just separated differently and therefore look differently inside the dropper

Ok... I loved the technique as soon as you showed it, but now that I've tried it... how do you avoid pools? How do you get such perfect coverage of the stain layer over the canvas layer?

I did the same technique to the same mini and found that it helped to have another wet brush on hand (just water) to feather out some of the darker spots continually while its drying. Basically to blend it out until it looks smooth. It worked well. Also make sure to soak up any excessive pooling in the recesses with a dry brush.
