The Pakistan's Titanic analogy is perfect in every sense. 1. Like in Titanic, there's a clear divide between the upper deck and the lower deck...the haves and the have nots 2. Journey through the frigid waters was fraught with danger and hitting the iceberg was imminent. 3. While the ship is sinking there's still the orchestra playing. People don't seem to realize what's hit them yet. 4. There were 13 life boats in the Titanic, likewise there's one for every ruling elite and the ones calling the shot at the establishment. 5. The lead characters still harbor hopes of surviving, while I am sure one of them has to play the part of Jack. 6. None of the passing ship are gonna respond to the crises call this time around. 7. While Titanic is a tragedy for the ship and it's voyagers, it's pure entertainment for the movie goers especially since it involves a certain actresses love making scenes with the lead actor. Talk about sex scenes, Pakistani politics is rife with that too. My heart will go on.....

In India people is not really discussing Pakistan at all, because we don't see Pakistan as any type of competition. @froomerce - as time progresses - more and more of the younger generation of PK will start feeling that way. However, I sincerely believe that if PK had not split from us - they would have likely impeded IN's progress as well. This is because Islam and Muslims are regressive - and wish to stay stuck in 5th century thoughts and ideas. As an example - see Afghanistan, Iran and even Azad J&K where they are imposing hijab.

@@ShyamKumar-zb2mw This is true, but we can always be an example of how to develop. Hope we can resolve communal tensions internally once and for all and reorient our own muslims towards the future rather than towards the past. I think it needs a degree of agnosticism to truly be rational.
@ShyamKumar-zb2mw

@@echosmith5256 - many Muslim leaders starting with Sir Syed till Maulana Azad tried to reorient the muslims towards the future - but the Mullah leadership - fearing that an educated Muslim will start questioning the (rather feeble &) fragile theology of Islam, its inherent rigidity and the religion's internal contradictions with modernity - opposed all of them tooth and nail. So you cannot wake a man who is only pretending to be asleep. You cannot free a man who wants to be bound in the chains of ignorance, unfortunately. All the violence that is present in Islam - is just a reflection of its inablity to cope with its contradictions with modernity and progress. 🙂 Agree that we need considerable agnosticism to be rational and free of the heady intoxication of religion. 🙂

I am from Tamilnadu, a state in the southern India. The discussion about many aspects of economy, culture prevailing at present in India and Pakistan was very interesting. I wish India too must make many more strides in strengthening our democracy and also in narrowing down the rich poor divide. Without doubt Mr. Manmohan Singh's role in reshaping our economy is unquestionable. Unfortunately Pakistan for many years was under military rule. Religion should not be allowed to interfere in the governance of both the countries for better progress. I feel that the successive Pakistan governments obsession with Kashmir was the major reason for the strained relationship between both the countries. Hopefully in future relations between both the countries improve and enable people from both sides to easily visit the other country.

I think the reason so many Indians tune in to listen to Uzair is because he falls in a unique bracket of being an outside observer but also a desi who understands the cultural aspects well. He can be trusted with his observations as he doesn't have an incentive to be biased towards any party here. Unlike some Indian economists who describe every scheme from the government as a masterstroke or a disaster depending upon their political stance.

Uzair, I am 60 now, and the country has transformed in front of my eyes, and needless to say, it has been made possible because of digitization. The service delivery system has improved immensely with minimal leakages. Hence, both the provincial and central government being re-elected more often. You can only sway the populace with your narrative if they are not hungry. India provides free food grains to around 800 million of its citizens. There is nothing to be proud of, but nonetheless, it is huge. The justice delivery system is slow and needs reform. Shezad, admire your research and presentation. Stay blessed.

I was intrigued when Uzair spoke about his ancestors (the Memons of Kathiawar) converting to Islam in the 16th century. I belong to a community called Hindu-Saurashtra people (based in present day Tamil Nadu) who originally hail from the same Kathiawar region, but migrated to Southern India in the 16th century to escape the Muslim invasions in Kathiawar. I guess while my ancestors moved south (then controlled by Vijayanagar Empire) to escape conversions, Uzairs ancestors embraced Islam and bought peace. Human history is fascinating. All that said, listening to this podcast makes me convinced that if peace is given a chance, Pakistan has more to gain.

You are talking about why Pakistan doesn't do well in IT Exports.. Have you built a single IIT or equivalent institution in your entire period of existence since independence. We got our first Indian Institute of Technology thanks to Jawahar Lal Nehru way back in 1952. And we now have 26 of them. And believe me when I tell you getting into MIT is a lot easier than getting into IIT in India. It's that competitive an entrance exam. When you invest in technical education over the long term you can do well with IT exports eventually..

Great innovations in agriculture, horticulture, agronomy ! Wow great movement forward ! Corruption and small time cheating has nearly come to an end . My hopes are that once these foundations of economy gets sounder and sounder and Institutions ( what Pakistani call Idare ) become stronger and stronger, the politician's abilities to harm would be weaker and weaker ! One point I wanted to mention here (having privilage to get exposure of rural macro economics in the best institute in India): 1. Palm oil is cheaper then ghee/butter in India. However, Palm oil is bad for health. People use more expensive oils (Like Sunflower oil, soyabean oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil etc) for daily consumption. 2. The reason Indians prefer milk, ghee and butter is- access to unadultraded milk/ghee and butter with a reasonable price. India has a legendary history of coopertive movement, which ensured operation flood (milk revolution). That ensured quality milk, ghee and butter in every corner of India. Amul, Nandini, Aavin, Verka etc all are Cooperatives.
