indian here. just randomly saw karachi on google maps satellite view after watching some random video of an american about apartments for the rich on the beach in karachi (EMAR). i was surprised by the expanse of precise manhattan type blocks and at the same time devastated by the complete lack of anything organic or green. no trees, no parks, no natural landscape, no water bodies. it has the geometric aesthetic of a dystopian hong kong apartment building except it stretches across the whole city. then searched "karachi urban planning" and landed here to try to understand how tings got to this state. karachi doesn't look like a city, it looks like an excel spreadsheet.

If you go through the census, district central in karachi (where all migrants were rehabilitated in Karachi) is the most educated one. Still like no one discusses us in all these karachi specific podcasts, it's always about old elite areas and new elite areas. North nazimabad, North karachi, Nazimabad, bufferzone,fb area, liaqatabad etc.

Such a graceful lady. Just a humble request/suggestion - can Marvi design a course for the Army on sustainable architecture. Should be a mandatory course for all officers before they are allocated their well deserved land plots. No pun intended - we need to explore sustainable solutions and what better way than to educate the biggest stakeholders of the country on environmentally friendly real estate development.

Love you podcast Heard Marvi Mazhar for the first time very informative. But i would like to point out two thing that she misspoke.1. The Bharia Icon tower plot in Clifton was not an amenity plot , this used to be Hussein D'sliva Park Clifton with 6 building and 5 having 6 apartments each and one having 3 apartments was made by Hussein D'sliva Construction company in the 50 or 60 and was later taken over by Habid Bank. I know this as a fact since i grew up their . In fact there the tenants had a case in the Sindh High court . 2 The pick City in India is Jaipur nor Judpur . Just to make the record straight .

Brilliant podcast. Some very good insight into Karachi and DHA especially. Living in Phase 5 myself and going through the stupid issues DHA employs into not allowing you to move a single brick in your OWN home. I built a non permanent Bamboo structure on my roof in order to provide some shade so as to enjoy the roof in the day also. Low and behold DHA instantly came and told me I have to take it all down. They are an absolute joke to have to audacity to do such things when they can't even close a gutter on the corner of our street.

Yar she's got so many things right. in Islamabad also the sectors developed originally by cda are very poorly managed, but if you look at the layout, there is always provision for service roads, parkings, everyone has a park, or parks, nearby, market spaces and spaces for Mosque. On the other hand, many private societies, which comparatively well managed and also give a lot of security for families and ladies, but bcz they are profit oriented, they hardly have a park nearby, out of all, only 3 have graveyards although its in the map of all, plazas constructed in places allocated for libraries and in many cases, no service rd at all.

Its good to hear this discussion, but I dont agree that the public cant be blamed to '''some'''' extent. For privilege and social or economic mobility from "middle class to upper class", they rejected well planned urban designed areas of Karachi in favour of fauj-built crap. If there is greed and social isolation in the built up structure of new areas (aka DHA, Bahria) there is some percentage of it in the public opting for them as well.
