Honestly, the light-hearted way this episode went was the EXACT way to respond to centuries of bogus, outrageous rumours directed at the Shia Muslim community (or any religious minority found in a majoritarian state). These misconceptions need to be talked about, sure, but more importantly they need to be made fun of openly just to show how stupid they are, and how stupid some people can be when they blindly believe them growing up.

My favourite part of this podcast has to be when Kumail goes all majlis-mode (being Shia myself, Kumail I get it!) and Shehzad listens patiently (even with the sunglasses on! And yes, I agree capatalism is the biggest religion. An important read on this topic and more details on the various incidents that Kumail mentions from Muslim history is “after the prophet: the epic story of Shia-Sunni split” by Lesley Hazelton. Shehzad you should read the book as part of your book reviews and if you ever want someone to discuss the book with you on the podcast, I would love to!

Don't forget Hussaini Brahmins who fought in karbala.
@MunnaMobile0005 ай бұрын
that's a myth. very detailed historical accounts of Karbala exist from different sources, including the names of every single martyr of Karbala. No Hussaini Brahmins were in that event. Yes, there was an African Christian freed slave called Jawn (John) who was part of Imam Hussain's contingent and was martyred at Karbala, but that was it really. The Hussaini Brahmin story was likely made many centuries later in the subcontinent when some Brahmin communities would take part in Muharram rituals where Shias had a strong cultural presence to commemorate Karbala as a way of showing intercommunal solidarity.

It would sound strange but in my home state Odisha which has 2% Muslim population , Shia and Sunnis come together to celebrate Moharram . I have asked many Muslims about this and many aren't aware of the difference . And those who are aware , say this is our festival , and won't comment further . I wish some KZbinr or news channel would cover this topic in Odisha . It seems , when people are in a minority , they forget their differences more readily . I also wonder , do Hindus of pakistan , forget their caste differences , considering they are also less than 2% of the population ?

He was ordered by Imam to stand down, despite knowing he could make enemy's blood run cold. N that was the biggest test of hazrat abbas to not fight to protect Imam where he could fight n win the war n he obeyed although it was v. difficult for him .. That war was imposed on Imam by yazid.. O Abbas nobody can imagine what u went thru. U are the sea of obedience to Allah n his appointed Imam on earth.. I've heard Mola wasn given permission to fight bcoz he could win the war n intention of Imam was not to win physically but to spread the word of truth against tyranny n if Imam would win the war, the word of truth would be blurred by ppl saying Imam fought against the Muslims n won ... So Imam chose to lose the war physically but he won actually bcoz the word of truth prevailed to all humanity n still word of Imam is prevailing. Regarding why Karbala happened: Syria was conquered during the time of the third caliph and Banu Ummaya were made the governors. The people of Syria did not know the Prophet AS neither the Ahl ul Bayt. Banu Ummaiya famously knowm for their hatred of the AhleBayt instill hatred in the Syrians regarding them. Mola Ali was cursed throughout Muavias era from the mimbers of masajid. One of the point of Imam Hassan’s truce with Muavia was that this should be stopped and that he will not install a Khalifa himself after him. Both he accepted but did not adhere to and made Yazid the khalifa in his lifetime. Hence, when Karbala happened, the people of Syria having a large army was against the Ahle Bayt because they were on the side of the ruler

Karbala has became a powerful symbol of the struggle against oppression and the importance of upholding one's beliefs even in the face of certain death. commemoration of Ashura, the day of the battle, with mourning rituals and reflections on the themes of justice, sacrifice, and resilience in the face of tyranny. It is continuous reminder of injustice and the call for struggle against injustice.

Saari umar hum betrayal ka suntay ayen hain and aaj oppression ho gai. It was about power, tribal rivalry and betrayal.baaki over the yrs jaisay jaisay log attay rahay, kahanian jhortay gaye. Aab agay ja kay pata challay ga how the real events unfolded which led to shadat of hazrat IH and his family member at karbela.

What I wrote is what has been a common knowledge, there books after books which describe these events. It was a battle of rights and wrongs.

Ye bahut serious topic hai....being a sunni I have heard all these rumors throughout my life about shias and still are popular among sunnis....inn sab rumors ko bahut categorically deny karna chahiye tha and counter karna chahiye tha...har bath py baghair kisi waja ke hahaha hahah karna is very annoying and irritating.

This was so much needed Shahzad. While growing up, all I heard was these myths spread about the Shias. However, when someone told me about the whole Sham e Ghariban myth, I knew it couldn't be more ridiculous and started questioning everything I was told. Thank you for addressing this in a light-hearted way!

I have shia relatives, all of other rumors are lies, except the charpai thing(it doesn't happen now) our old shia relatives in village some time place charpai ulti, but they don't sleep on that It doesn't happen now a days.

It still happens and it is a UP, India tradition where we turn the charpai uprise down as it is sign of mourning and no one sleeps on the ( it's done fro 7th mohorram to 10th mohorram)

The most widely held rumour I heard as a teen was that most actresses and prostitutes are Shia. The reason, supposedly, for that being that they practice temporary nikah or ‘muttah’ with their clients thus going about their dhanda guilt free. Of course this makes me laugh out loud now 😅
