Not sure what happened but the tenon removal did not get added.
This piece came from a large pile of firewood at our family reunion.
I could see the grain thought the flickering fire. The next morning I claimed it and I think turned into a nice bowl. The bowl will go back to my niece who is the owner of the tree .
Hope you enjoy the video!

Thank you Gary; that is is a similar story to how I source my wood and I love it when there is a connection to the wood and a finished piece can be passed back to those who knew the tree. A lovely bowl, full of character.

Nature did the painting, but you helped it find the right shape. Looks awesome. I love it when the spalting has such a variety of markings. It's like a series of doodles that happened at different times.

Nice job, Gary. I have nothing against using resin, but it is refreshing to see someone just use it to repair the wood instead of making it a resin turning with a little wood tossed in. Thanks for saving all that woodgrain and giving a piece of firewood a new life.

Thanks Qapla. I have no problem with others using it. But I do not think it is good for me as far as bad reactions go. I have used gallons and gallons of the stuff and for work projects so I decided I will let others have the epoxy and wood show. Thanks for watching, Gary

It pains me to think of all the potential beauty & function that's made its way to woodstoves & campfires instead of to our lathes or other woodshop applications over the years. It's sure made me look closer at pieces from my firewood pile. Good save, Gary. You did it justice & I'm sure your niece & nephew will be proud owners.

Thank you very much. We have burned our fair share of firewood. But mostly Alder which is plentiful around here. It was a nice way to get out in the woods and was mostly from clear cuts that was going to happen no matter what. All wood is now looked at closely for becoming a turning. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very nice bowl Gary! Sometimes you just have to live with cracks. If I didn't turn all the wood I have that had cracks I wouldn't be turning much at all. A lot of times I can cut them away or turn them away but sometimes not. It's the nature of wood
@ThePapa1947

That was a good find from the woodpile. The spalting is beautiful. I use a slow-set resin for filling large cracks. I usually seeps deep into the crack before setting (about 60 minutes depending on temperature). I normally add a colorant, black or red, to highlight this feature. I've never had it fail (so far) during turning and it gets very hard and strong after three days.

Thank you Paul. The splating was a real treat. Really could not see it till I started cutting it up. What I had was a table top resin. It worked fine and was good to go in about 24 hours. Thanks for watching, Gary

That's a nice bowl from firewood. Yup, the piece of wood was worth saving from the fireplace. It's good you made the Crack along the side of the bowl look like the spalting. I like it when the flaws of the wood are incorporated into the design. It seems to give the piece more character. IMHO, if it were a perfect piece of wood, it may look like any other turning that has no interesting feature. GOOD ONE, GARY!!!!
