This is beautiful work Gary. It came up on a search as I was trying to find ideas for stands for toruses (tori?). Guess what I've been working on! was quite amazed that there are a few different approaches to making these tori.

Thank you Greg. This was the first I made this way. I have done them as regular segments so that is not problem keeping it round. So when I did this one I had to come up with some solution. It worked even better than I hoped. And I did not have to glue blocks on for clamps which is what I have seen done. Take care, Gary

Nice job on the torus Gary. I did one a few years ago when I had a Delta midi with a 12 1/2" swing so I made mine 12" OD with a ring thickness of 4". Pretty much maxed out the lathe. I had 72 rings of 24 pieces. Alternating walnut and birch. Ended up with a torus of 1728 pieces with the colours making bands that spiraled around endlessly. Sort of endlessly. Each colour band circled the torus 3 times before rejoining itself. I didn't think of making your circular clamping jig. That would have been a help.

Gary, Excellent work! As always. Have you been reading my mind? I've been wanting to make a Torus ever since a few years ago I read in Malcomb Tibbits book about making one. Then I watched Kyle Toth make one. Their presentation and technique made it seem insurmountable to me. I know it's work, and exact work but you have the ability to make it do able for me. Just like you did with the dizzy bowls. I'm in the middle of making some Dizzy bowls right now, but this will be next. I glued up my third and fourth Dizzy bowl blanks. Yesterday I began gluing up rings for the third. So in a couple of weeks I'll be finished with dizzy bowls. Then I'll make some torus'. Thanks again for making these videos and encouraging me to aim higher. I'll send you pictures of my dizzy bowls and then my torus. I'll probably have some questions along the way! Thanks again Gary RP
@ThePapa19474 жыл бұрын
Thank you RP and I am not the least bit surprised that you would be thinking of making one. Your Dizzy bowls are beautiful so I have no doubt your torus will be as well. I think the mystery of making something makes it seem almost impossible. I like to take the mystery away. Are you thinking of making one of the Dodecahedron turnings? If so my next one will simplify the whole process. Take care my friend, Gary

Hi Gary, Before I type my comment,10000 congratulations. I wish I could put 10000 👍 but I would lose count and have to start again and it would also be a very long comment. Well, it's Sunday morning, on my second cup of tea and your video to watch.................. Now have to make another cup of tea as that one went cold. This is just astonishing. Your clamping methods made it look so simple. Which I know it is not. Brilliant work Gary. Now off to the workshop to finish my first segmented piece which will be my next video. It does not have 1134 pieces, by the way, so please don't be disappointed in the segment count. Once again Gary take care and a huge round of applause from this side of the pond. Cheers, Huw

Thank you Leo and I hope you do make something. You will enjoy it. I tried to figure out a way where I get get as much turned before flipping it.I almost enjoy working out the method as much as turning it....ALMOST! Choose a way you are comfortable with and it will be great. Take care, Gary

Outstanding piece of work. Very good production. Question: What did you call the oak that had been oven treated and where did you get it?
@ThePapa19474 жыл бұрын
Thank you Glen...happy you liked it. It is called Cambia Red Oak. Here is a link to where I got it. It is a local hardwood store called CrossCut but they have a sign in side calling it The Wood Workers Candy Store. www.crosscuthardwoods.com/cambia-oak.html They have other Cambia woods as well. www.crosscuthardwoods.com/apps/search?q=cambia Take care, Gary

Wonderful job you did. I’m a satisfied subscriber. Keep going. So that is 6 degrees on both sides?
@ThePapa19474 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much John. It would be 3 degrees on each side. The reason I cut it on 6 degrees was I just cut the piece in half which gave it a total of 6 degrees. I should have explained that but I was thinking it would get a bit confusing. Any more questions on it feel free to ask. Take care, Gary

Papa That is really a beautiful piece how do you figure the angles on so many things like that
@ThePapa19474 жыл бұрын
Thank you Robert I am happy you like it. Pick how many disk you want to use(60 for mine) divide that into 360 and you get the angle. So 360/60 =6 which is 3 degrees on a side. Hope that helps..if not let me know. Take care, Gary

Anything touches your hands turns out into some exquisite piece. The doughnut looks great. How much time approx did it take to finish this. Loved watching it..👌👌👏👏
@ThePapa19474 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Hema Rachel. I thought the question might come up as to the time it took. I looked and I cut and glued everything together over a 4 day period. Probably 4 hours each day. Then turning and sanding a part of a day and a few hours to put the finish on. That is as close as I can figure but a good estimate based on the dates on the files of my video. Thanks again for your wonderful comments. Gary
