The reputation that English food is bland and tasteless still seems to prevail in America. The truth is our food isn't flashy or ostentatious but it is wholesome, hearty comfort food. Thank you for recognising this and putting it out there, hopefully the word will get out.

Sugar, fruits and spices in the UK became so common the affluent people couldn't show off with them so they showed off by getting the best ingredients and relying on their quality, rather than spices. The meat and other ingredients had to be fresh as there wasn't anything to cover it up. This was reinforced by the second world war rationing.
@terencecarroll18124 ай бұрын
This came from WW2 when because of rationing the soldiers experienced stodgy, fatty and mostly not too tasty food due to lack of real world ingredients.

The thing with traditional British foods is that they tend not to be heavy on spices, which ends up giving us a reputation for bland unseasoned food, but it's really just that flavours are often quite subtle and lean more heavily on herbs

@harrypike731Ай бұрын
Yeah. But this isn't even a British-specific thing. It's regional to Europe as historically the focus was on cooked meat or fish that was fresh, as opposed to spices. Other than Italian, Greek, and Spanish food, pretty much all of European cuisine has this 'blandness' (it's not actually bland, but just to use the term). The traditionally dishes across central and Northern Europe, as well as Eastern Europe, are all variants of, like, some form of meat / fish, a carb (usually potato), and veg or fermented side. Stews are common, sausages are common, pies are common! People meme about British food but nobody says a thing about, say, Swedish food, or Polish food, or German food, which are essentially just the same traditional dishes but with cultural tweaks.

Not sure when you were here, but, would you eat a salad on cold days like that? The idea that British food was terrible came from the US soldiers over here during the war, everything was rationed so we had to make do with what we had that meant eating the things we would have binned before the war. Even after the war things like banana's, oranges and other fruits were not available for years, there were more important items to import to get the country back on it's feet, don't forget Britain was virtually under siege by the U-Boats in the war, war materials were more important than spices.

The food scene in the U.K. for the150 years or so leading up to WWII was grim.The American soldiers thing is something Brits tell each other to feel better as it puts the blame on conditions out of their control. === “What passes for cookery in England is an abomination. It is putting cabbages in water. It is roasting meat till it is like leather.” - Virginia Woolf in ‘To The Lighthouse’ (1927) === "The ladies of England are unfavourably disposed to our art; yet I find no difficulty in assigning the cause of it. It is particularly the case with them (and indeed it is so in some measure with our own sex) that they are not introduced to their parents' table till their palates have been completely benumbed by the strict diet observed in the nursery and boarding-school." - Louis Eustache Ude (c. 1768 - 10 April 1846) was a French chef and writer who spent the majority of his culinary career in England. === "They remained smug, defensive and not a little arrogant on the British food they offered to guests from other nations, they found criticism of their food hard to accept. For the process of its decline had occurred at their finest hour, so how could the sustenance of Empire Builders be in any way inadequate?" - Colin Spencer, British Food, An Extraordinary 1000 Years of History

Bacon is not Ham, Bacon is taken from the Loin of the Pig. Ham comes form the Gammon ( rear Leg) or Hock ( Front Leg) of the Pig. All Pig meat can be Green, i.e fresh, or Cured either in Brine or Smoked.

Ohh, thanks for the info! 😊 Bacon and ham are definitely different, and it’s cool to learn more about their origins and curing methods!

Thank you for Hopefully showing the world how to eat British food, I hate watching American's eating each item individually (Like children) then moaning its dry. You got to wet it up a bit and mix it together.
@ThePassportCouple7 ай бұрын
We really enjoyed the food. We like to eat food individually to understand the flavor a bit more, but always enjoy a good mash up too

British food will seem heavy if you only eat heavy food. For a lighter meal, try Dover Sole, asparagus, and new potatoes, ham salad (any type of salad), have soft boiled eggs with soldiers for dipping into the yolk and a mug of tea for breakfast, prawn cocktail etc etc etc

Great suggestions! We love exploring different types of cuisine and can’t wait to try those lighter options next time! thanks again! 😊💛

Much of UK food is full of fat and carbs because of the weather and the fact most people used to walk to a manual labour job burning a lot of calories in a day. Also, things like a fry up (full English) would really only be eaten once a week. Bangers and Mash is a decently healthy meal tbh, and a lot of our meals are designed to be all in ones and eaten on the go - pies, pork pies, pasties, sandwiches, sausage rolls etc. These foods are a meal on their own. Brits typically will eat very little in a day such as a pie or sandwich for lunch, a few cups of tea during the day then have supper which is usually meat and potatos. And honestly, we only started getting fat once America fast food chains started opening.

We loved the food, for all the reasons you mentioned. We probably ate enough for the week, but we did enjoy the traditional meals, as well as the mobility of the food. We tried to walk as much as we could to burn our calories...or at least some of them 😅 Thanks for watching and saying hello 👋

Re: the bacon that she said looked like ham - that's back bacon as opposed to streaky bacon that Americans eat. It's from the part of the pig that Americans would recognize from a pork chop. Re: Yorkshire pudding - it's not made with milk AND water and flour. That would make a paste. It's got eggs in it. Milk, eggs and flour. And it's pronounced York-sure not shy-er. Listen to what the English people around you are saying. Then repeat after them.

Why? Pub food around the UK is pretty much a standard menu. Maybe a hotpot would be the only thing different on a winter menu but the food they have set out to try is found on every pub menu
