I was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer in April 2021 and I also live in Sacramento. I think we have the same oncologist! I have Dr. Rebecca Brooks at UC Davis and she was my surgeon also, coming up on 2 years since that surgery. My symptoms were very different - no pain - but suddenly I became very constipated, which was unusual for me. I called my family doctors office and spoke to an on-call nurse, a male, and explained my symptoms and was told to drink more water, eat more fiber, etc. Luckily, I had a scheduled appointment for a yearly physical with my family doctor a couple of weeks later and I brought it up then. She ordered a CT Scan and there it was - already spread to my liver. I had the gynetic testing done and, nothing. Went through about 10 rounds of chemo before surgery, the surgery didn't solve much, two more chemos after that, then on the oral chemo pill. I was on that for about a year and a half before my CA 125 rates started to climb again. Now back on chemo but a different drug. I just turned 64. I'm fortunate that I respond well to the drugs and am still able to work. I try not to think too far into the future, but today is good. Anyhoo....thank you for your story and I wish you well! Sorry for the novel but I got excited when I heard you are from Sacramento and we (I think) share the same doctor. Much love from another Sacramento cancer patient!

You have to be your own advocate. You have to be persistent or find another doctor. Another way of getting medical attention is to go to the emergency room! They'll run every test! She was at a disadvantage because of COVID. I advocated for myself, even when I had a clean mammogram in June, when I knew I had cancer. I wanted my December MRI ASAP; this was in 2019. The doctor relinquished, and I got the MRI in August and surgery in November; I indeed did have cancer. The cancer didn't show up on the mammogram. Imagine what would've happened if I waited until December? COVID hit the very next January! Testing and surgery would've been a nightmare with the new protocols. And imagine if you didn't want the jab. No jab, no surgery! I'm glad I didn't listen to the white coat. We trust our doctors too much.

I lost a very good friend to stage 4 ovarian cancer in 2022. Her only symptom was constipation, which was consistently ignored by her doctors who told her to eat more fiber. She was a very healthy person, into plant based diets and exercise. By the time she finally got an x-ray at the ER, the tumors were so large they had completely blocked her colon. She had surgery and chemo, a brief period of no evidence of disease, then a fast recurrence and died less than a year after diagnosis. She was 56. She was very strong-willed and did advocate for herself but it wasn't enough. The doctors still ignored her constipation because "it's normal for menopausal women". It's not normal. I miss my friend every day. I'm sorry you are going through this. It's a horrid disease. Some people do have better outcomes than my friend. She did not have the BRCA gene. One thing we learned was that non-white people (she was mixed race) aren't as well studied and there may be other genes involved we don't know about, particularly for people of other races.

I was diagnosed IIc in January 2021, and simultaneously diagnosed with uterine and appendicial cancers. I was not well for at least 10 years prior and went through 4 different drs looking for answers- a pcp and 3 naturopaths because i was chronically fatigued, pale with dark circles under my eyes, and always having bloating and gi issues. I also blead extremely heavily every month, with spotting inbetween, and had 2 or 3 incidents of extreme pain in my abdominal region. The pain would bring me to the ground and take my breath away and were likely cysts bursting. The pcp diagnosed me with ibs. The first naturopath said that i was anemic and had a lot of the same nutritional deficiencies as autistic people, likely due to leaky gut/malabsorption. The second naturopath listened attentively and then loaded me up with more expensive supplements. The third naturopath diagnosed and treated me for sibo and recommended an ultrasound. I began to lose hope as I went to work soooo tired each day, suffered from regular headaches, and could barely make it through the day. Fast forward to August 2020; I was sitting on the couch eating dinner and was suddenly overcome with a pain that took my breath away. I froze, afraid to move, with the sensation of expansion happening. If i inhaled the air rushed right back out of my mouth. I knew something was terribly wrong and should have called an ambulance but the pain was so bad that i could not cope with the idea of transporting and slowly made my way to my bed, knowing it might be my final resting place. But i awoke in the morning, and when i stood up warm, clear liquid, with a pink tinge, poured down my legs and pooled at my feet. I called the dr and believe it or not, they scheduled me months out. When the appt date finally arrived i showed up only to be told that i didn't have an appt😮💨. Now most people would have protested or marched over to the emergency room, but i was still in so much pain, was raising 2 foster babies, and just didn’t have any fight left. So when i finally got in to my new pcp, she did an exam and found irregularities, ran ca125, and it was at 13,000. She didn’t say i had cancer but quickly set me up with gynecology, and that dr said that it was likely. She wanted to do a biopsy but everything hurt so bad we skipped it and scheduled surgery just a few days out. I couldn't even be sad- i was just SO relieved to FINALLY have the answers I'd been seeking for so long, and to have a road map. Push, ladies, push! When you know, you know...
@ameliajane7715 Жыл бұрын
The post dinner pain incident, btw, was a 21 cm half tumor, half cyst that had burst and was necrotic by the time I had surgery. Can't believe how underscored patient testimony is, particularly in women's health. You really have to push and be obnoxious to get taken care of in America, is what I learned.

@@DecorTours I started bleeding in November of 2020 and never stopped until I had a hysterectomy in August 2021. There was needling pain like hot pokers in the lower right and lower left. Ultrasound, uterine biopsy and CA-125 were all normal. The surgeon left my ovaries and took the cervix, uterus and tubes. I had complications after the surgery (fistula) and in the ER is when I got the pathology results. High Grade Serous Carcinoma in both tubes, capsules had broken and it was spreading. When it was spreading, symptoms were total constipation, no appetite, excessively weight loss, anemia and fatigue I tried to mask with excessive coffee consumption. I made the Oncologist do the debulking surgery first to stage me and 6 rounds of chemo afterward. If any female has abnormal bleeding, assume the worst and get the hysterectomy. I was offered a progesterone IUD to stop the bleeding. If I had taken that option, I'd be dead right now.

@@lghop82When doing a biopsy there's always a risk with bleeding, and if so the bleeding COULD potentially spread the cancer cells throughout the body (via blood stream). However, to get a diagnosis if having cancer or not, and find the exact right treatment, a biopsy is a must. And not doing it, comes with a much more dangerous risk (as in not getting the right diagnosis and by that the right treatment) Also, those dr's doing biopsies are pros and do it every day and are of course careful to not cause any major bleeding. A tumour (if there is one) could also bleed by itself, even without a biopsy, so I would say that (the potential spreading with a biopsy/bleeding) is the last to worry about.

Twenty years ago April 1 I lost a dear friend to stage 4 ovarian cancer that had spread to her stomach. She was initially diagnosed back in 1998. Initially she went to all her doctors and chemo treatments by herself. The last two years of her life I took her to her doctor and chemo treatments as well as whenever she went to the hospital for different conditions whether it would be for fluids or if she needed to be admitted. I am glad to hear that treatments have improved since when she was getting her treatments. I remember the blood tests before chemo and if her counts weren’t right they would postpone her treatment but give her medication to improve her blood counts. You’re correct in being own patient advocate and it does help to be another set of ears to compare notes with. May you have many more birthdays shared with your adult children. You got this!

It's very frustrating that she didn't state what her various symptoms were. That's the part I want to know.

I used to be my own advocate until all doctors became gaslighting asshats. I have several symptoms but no point in seeing any doctor because I know for a fact I will be blown off. I guess I will go when someone else calls an ambulance for me when something bad happens. Doctors will not take me seriously unless I am nearly dead. Haven’t been to doctors for years because it is traumatizing and dismissive.

I was a nurse and had to leave because I refused to take the covid shot. I am assuming since you were still working in a healthcare setting you took the shot. Within my research the shot had some parcel monkey thing that is known to cause cancer. the interest lies currently in the number of people getting cancer which strange. Whenever I hear this the first thing I find muself asking is did they take the shot.

what a disgraceful message you've left here. You should be ashamed of yourself. Nobody wants to hear your lies and foolishness, so go away and stay away.

Good thing you are no longer a nurse. Do you link EVERYTHING to the shot? This is so old, get over it already.

Shirley here. Why are so many people putting their cancer on you tube? If it's to make other people people that have cancer feel better I can't understand that.

Why not put it here? It may help people. You don’t have to watch it.

Hey former nurse here . One googles or remembers symptoms and it's all text book or recall from observation . There are many first hand experiences that people share that educate far more than schooling or taking care of people. It's the little things that might be a light bulb moment .

IT's so people who are interested can learn from other's experiences...
