I really dislike the "guy falls on top of girl and accidentally grabs her boob/s" or "guy walks in on girl changing and gets beat up for it" tropes. In fact the only time I feel like it even really works (and even then, the whole grabbing the boobs thing sort of damages the immersion) was in the scene you showed from Evangelion, because it's meant to drive home how distant, non-social, and perhaps even alien Rei is. Also it didn't try to use it for comedy like so many other anime.

yeah, but unfortunately it seems to be something common japanese males likes a lot and for such reasons many, many manga/anime tend to do a similar scene sooner or later ...they want to appeal the most people possible and by that gaining the most money possible...sad truth, anime is an industry and most of anime creators do what masses want to see...and this explain all the "high school" "tsundere" "guy falls on top of girl and accidentally grabs her boob/s" ecc...

@silvershadow56526 жыл бұрын
@Elco- the reason High School is a common setting is that most Japanese find that period of time to be the best part of their lives. They want to relive that. Unlike most other tropes that one makes way too much sense as if the majority wish they could relive the best times of their lives then an escape fantasy is easiest to appeal if it uses that setting. That doesnt mean that people outside of Japan will enjoy it, but it is what it is.

***** Okay, do the authors know how to provide real fanservice to their dumb otaku audience? Put in a crazy good girl, have her flirt like crazy with the MC. Have her shove his face into her boobs, have her put her crotch on her face, THAT's real fan service.
@sasukeuchiha9987 жыл бұрын
I thought real fanservice was providing something that the pleases fans. Usually involving intertextual references to other series that are related to the series or somewhere along the production line. For instance, Gintama being able to reference Gundam. Or do we mean something along the lines of titillating for the general audience that gives them a clear idea that the scene they are viewing has no value outside of being nice to look at?
@shadowprincess98177 жыл бұрын
what you're talking I belive is Homages or References to other media works...usually Fanservise is intended as a slighty erotic scene to arouse readers/watchers with some characters, a clear example is Fairy Tail main covers of girls characters...99% are in sexy/slutty clothes/positions with boobs in plain sight just to make "happy" the readers that are mostly boys who probably never had a real relation with a girl...is , for how I see it, a pathetic way to keep the readers interested in your works, sure there are moments where it can do very well if it fits with the situation, but most of the times they do it where there's no logic reasons to it...example, almost every single fight that involve girls have to somehow put in evidence their bodies in sexy poses, that too is slighty fanservice, there are some exceptions sure but most of the time is just senseless to do it I'm writing a book and so far the only scene like this is also justified by the situation , there's this vampire girl that jump from the Moon back to the planet (don't ask why , long story) during her "falling" in the atmoshpere her whole body got almost incinerated with only her bones and occasional flesh shards left, thanks to her regenerative powers she survives and regenerates the rest of her body but her clothes are completely gone so when she finally lands on the planet she's naked... just to say an example where this kind of situation actually fit with what's going on...

I absolutely hate everything the Tsundere trope represents. You have this cute girl beating the shit out of a guy who did little to nothing wrong (on purpose, at least), and it's perfectly fine because she's a cute girl. It would be one thing if the people around her were to treat it like the actual mental problem that it is, but everyone thinks it's okay, because she's a cute girl, which automatically means that the guy is in the wrong and she has every right to smack him. This is a disgusting double standard in anime that normalizes unhealthy behavior. If it was a man kicking a woman and sending her flying across the room, it would be framed as a dark, heavy tragedy but when it's the guy getting beat up, suddenly it's a romcom.

I can't fucking stand it either. Even more so when it's so unbelievably unreasonable - like this scene from an anime I watched recently: Dude in dude's changeroom, minding his own business, getting changed. Resident tsundere shithead accidentally walks in. Dude turns around, surprised to see a naked chick in the men's changerooms, then SHE punches HIM in the face for having the sheer gall to exist in his own changeroom. How the busted fuck does that equal funny? Sure, it's anime, it's not supposed to be realistic. But my problem with that trope is that it's just *so* far removed from reality. Anyone acted like some of these assholes, they'd get a broken nose in the first five minutes. Also related is the cock-blocking self appointed Upholder of Pants, and Sherrif of Girls' Chastities. This is the bitch that takes it upon herself to guard the virtue of other female characters in the show. The MC and a girl could be about to kiss, for example, and this fucktard will run over, kick MC in the cock and tell him to keep his filthy, "perverted" man-hands off girls! Never mind the fact that the other girl was definitely a willing partner, and no one asked her to stick her fucking nose in. Argh! I could do this all day. Which brings me to my next point - what's with the over-rabid gender segregation in anime? It's very much an 'us vs them' mentality regarding the sexes, and all girls in anime seem to be terrified of men. Certainly, most writers seem to think all men are "perverts" and all girls are pure, innocent, sexless beings that never - under any circumstances - think about sex or dicks. In just about every series I've watched, or VNs I've read, a character will make a point of saying something like "But dont even set foot in the girls' dorms, it's absolutely forbidden for men to enter' - in Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behaviour (which was an otherwise good series), there was a literal line drawn on the floor of the hostel, where men were not allowed to step over - various weapons lined the wall on the other side of the line in case they did, and had to be taken out...for fuck's sake. In the Majikoi series of visual novels, any and all males need permission from a female dorm-mate to enter the second floor, where the girls are. In the Little Busters! visual novel, girls patrol their dorms with fucking GUARD DOGS! I mean for crying out loud - it's as if Japanese women think men are always, at any given time, on the verge of losing their fucking minds and going on a good ol' fashioned mindless berserker fuck-rampage, at their expense. If you possess a cock, they think you're going to be barely in control of it. But, of course, the girls get no such restrictions. They can come and go from the male areas as they wish...because again, writers think girls don't actually want to fuck, ever. Guess what anime writers? I've been to fucking high school, you better believe they're every bit as bad as the boys are. /rant.

I never got why a woman beating up a man to near death is played up for comedy in anime. Is it because in Japan women are taught to be extremely submissive, so to them is absurd? Is it laughing at a man so weak that he can't protect himself from a woman? Is it that the man is getting what he deserves, even though 99% of the joke is that it's an accident? (I think I'd find it funnier if the groping was on purpose) I just don't find domestic abuse funny.

The thing that I dislike the most is it is completely unrealistic since people in real life trip and brush against each other accidentally in real life. "this is some form of sibling teasing. But as someone with siblings that didn't personally have that, this seems a weak explanation to me. It's very one-sided and he also seems legitimately afraid of it". It's an imbalance of power. She's the older sibling and knows it, and he won't hit her back and she knows it. Older siblings often tease their younger siblings, I assume that you had some of that dynamc happen with your siblings. It's nice that you never had it become this one-sided and physical, but it doesn't seem quite as remarkable as you seem to say. Though I will agree that it's obviously done for cheap slapstick, I'd put this instance and explanation as actually being a lot MORE palatable and realistic than all of the "accidental pervert' set-ups to doing it.

Abusive older siblings can be a big problem. Ive seen a few different variations on it. The playful teasing nickname, the abusing for anything against what the sibling wants, and the abhorrent eldest sibling is a psychopath and drives a younger sibling to permanently harm the one younger than them, leading to incarceration for an extended period. There is a scale but there are some parts of that scale you never want to see. And if you do wish you could unsee.

It’s also interesting how the male basher character only appears in shounen and harem, series that are aimed at male audience. You won’t find them in shoujou or reversed haram. Just like you won’t find the edgy prince type character in shounen or harem, which aree generally only attractive to the female audience and may even irritate the male audience. The only exception may be romcom which is more gender-neutral. So really it’s there because the male audience wanted it for some reason. So before complaining about how double-standard it is and girls are horrible for thinking men can’t hit them but they can do the same. Remember these are generally in shows made for men by men.

Lets get real for a sec, This video was made two years ago and I don't think anyone will ever read this. lets get more real, this is exactly how my and my own sisters relationship is. at a young age we were both abused and she suffered fare more then me. growing up she was violent mean and outright hit me all the time, despite this we are really close and when ever we talked about something serious we left violence at the door. I would get nervous about getting hit sure but at the end of the day that's just how we played. when abuse is seen as a game violence can turn into your only way to communicate. why I very rarely if ever hit back I am never accusatory of my sister and as we have become adults this violence has gradually backed off. iv never seen this anime but is it ever implied that the two siblings have a tough home life?
@silvershadow56526 жыл бұрын
Tough home life is the easiest way for that kind of behavior to start, but abuse from other sources can lead to it. Or guilt/betrayal, such as those who have seen so many close to them die or leave they push people away by being abrasive. Being blunt I am uncertain if people consider that in many cases those being abused accept it either as a way for venting from those who are close to them or feel they deserve the pain- or worse yet crave any attention, which is a really depressing way to live. Not everyone thinks about abuse in the moment as abuse, but often gives a pass to the abuser even if they fear it. As a matter of fact there are cases they let it slide as they fear the repercussions of speaking out as well. There are so many ways it can start and so many reasons people will let themselves be hurt, and its those nuances that people often overlook when considering these topics.

You should show more examples of the tropes being used poorly. That said I agree with this general argument, mainly in how the tropes aren't the problem, it's a lack of substance that's really lazy. What kills it for me is how the guy is not interested in the girl who is showing him the most attention Like practically throwing herself at him But he's avoiding her like she's some kind of plague-carrying patient zero Even in our Western shows and movies, the more child and family-friendly ones, the trope goes that the guy is supposed to want to get the girl, and often does Why? Why not? But there's always some bullshit reason or excuse why they can't date, go steady, or even be more than friends. No, they don't have to worry about marriage or kids, they themselves are still kids, but it is infuriating that no matter what the girl does, the guy rejects her for whatever reason And where are the damn parents!?

even though I don't quite support the beating trope, it always puzzles me that I wouldn't know how else to react if I was in the girl's shoes, at least in accidental pervert circumstances. I mean, I have been in accidental pervert circumstances but not to the degree of anime. the 1st being when my brothers and my dad took a picture of and my sister bathing when I was 6 and she 8. Fortunately we were squatting (I swore revenge, never got it, especially since I was somewhat scared of my brothers at the time), the 2nd being less than a month ago when I forgot to knock on my brothers door when I was sent to meet him for something and he was butt naked with his back turned (I slammed the door shut and he didn't talk to me that day and the next). of course situations with my older brothers where the youngest of the two is 6 years older than me won't work in the same manner as if someone in the my age range were to suddenly walked in when I was having a bath so when I wrap head around it it always goes back to throwing something and probably not talking about it due to embarrassment

from my experience those tropes actually mean something for japanese shows, like the fall into boob grab, its a common gag in comedy shows especially when its 2 guys talking then boob grabbed guy blushies and the grabber yells do you enjoy this you perv. Or the panties on head its from a fairy tail in which a guy made masks than you transform to that person, and it was a gag that you put the panties on and you transform into jenifer for example. As for the girl beats guy for perving around, comes from the word tsundere, tsun means angry and dere affection, so the author is trying to tell you this girl cares, if she didnt beat the guy for perving she doesnt care for him.

I think what Pedantic Romantic was saying is, make the troops have a purpose, instead of just being a trope. Example from Neon Genesis Evangelion: Asuka Langley is an obnoxious, egotistic, hot-heated, short tempered, and an overrall bitchy 14 year old girl. Quite a common personality in storytelling. WHY, is she like this? Because, *SPOILERS* As a child, her mother went insane from piloting a mech, basically, and began talking to a doll, treating it like Asuka, but completely ignoring her actual daughter. The mother later commits suicide. As a result, Asuka desires attention, wanting to always be #1. Her attitude is more of a front she puts as to not show her insecurities, but at the same time, she doesn't want to be lonely.

The Pedantic Romantic Ah, I see. Honestly, I don't find the tsunderes inherently annoying myself- It's the cynical, lazy, copy-paste ideaology of including tsundere characters for the sake of having them and selling figures and posters and just making said tsundere a checklist of things that tsunderes are. I've just developed this instinctual urge to groan whenever I see a girl that fits the tsundere design archetype, because it seems so many tsundere girls get lackluster characterization and development.

I'm sort of hoping that the next time I see that "guy falls on a girl and accidentally gets into a questionable position with her" cliche, the girl's clothing drastically changes to something very revealing without any logical explanation. And when the girl rears up to punch or kick the person due to embarrassment, either the hit is too weak to even nudge the person, or the person blocks it and then proceeds to walk away from the scene looking annoyed. I dunno, I just feel like it might be humorous.

Alright... So would you say you wouldn't mind the brother-bashing as much if it were depicted more in the abstract/silly style the rest of the show has (e.g. when the green-haired character gets smacked by her teacher) or would you feel as though it still underlines the problem along with the lack of a decent reason behind it. Like, I pointed something similar in my Sora Nagihara video and how such humor doesn't work when an innocent character is mocked/beaten up (e.g. Squidward torture porn).
@JLCL017 жыл бұрын
+The Pedantic Romantic Hey, thanks for replying. I thought maybe you'd ignore it or something. Anyhow, I haven't seen the series but I do admit it's odd they'd depict the brother-bashing in a non-comedic way visually. Again, it would be headache-inducing to figure out why. I like watching your videos, so far. They really help in terms of taking things into account when I'm either watching an anime or even creating my own comic.

im getting really sick of moments in anime where the tone just gets crushed by moments of "anime comedy" in which all characters...well...break character and seem to completely forget where they are for a shitty slapstick or joke that's just 3 frames repeating an animation. This coupled with what alot of anime do now where they just flatout change the art style of the scene to a lower budget one actually has brought 8 or 9 out of 10 anime down to a 5 or 6 for me. One of the ones that really pissed me off was Drifters, this was an anime with a good concept, cool moments, good writing and character motivations and even potential for good comedy with all the characters having the same goal but different values leading to different misunderstandings between each other in every day life...BUT NO...SOME OLD FART IS THROWING BERRIES, LETS SPEND A WHOLE 30 SECONDS ON THIS PILE OF SHIT AND RUIN ANY SEMBLANCE OF IMMERSION FOR THE SAKE OF A GAG THAT WOULD ONLY MAKE 4 YEAR OLDS LAUGH

This reminded me of a scene from Trinity Seven kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpCYi2mJqK6el8U it was refreshing to see them do something other then what you're expecting to happen. also *Rakudai Kishi No Cavalry* had tropes but it also did some refreshing things. it was far better then i was expecting.

I find the most interesting anime use very little tropes because tropes are just the visual language of anime, and non anime viewers really don't understand this language which hurts true mainstream adoption; being able to convey what they mean through character development and narrative instead of copping out and using the library of tropes. Of course, there are good way and bad ways of doing both. As you assert, the vast majority of anime just lazily implement tropes for the sake of tropes because the average anime audience expects tropes which leads to a very average nonstandout anime.

well the only way we stop getting anime with the stupid tropes/fan service is to stop watching them, eventually the'll catch on.
@vibratoryhawk58 жыл бұрын
I think adding small amounts of music or sound effects of what is on screen could really help out your videos, I think it would really help offset the your slightly monotone voice and make the videos overall more interesting audibly. Not trying to hate or anything, your ideas are fantastic and your input is interesting, concept wise. Keep up the good work overall.

i had a very similar problem with the character but couldn't quite put it into words or much of anything beyond a serface level irritation at the fact whenever the two of them were on screen that ai-chan would hurt makoto it didn't really sink in as irritation til that scene you mentioned when makoto legitmiately pisses ai-chan off. At that point i had to pause and go "this cheapens this moment because she has hit him for so much less" but my utter adoration for the series was not able to be stopped by this which is litreally my only gripe with the series the thing that really makes this an iyahikei is the music, which always kept me in a semi trance of wanting to see what these friends (pikari and teko mostly) would do next this series was great start to finish like y ou said

I would like your response to my thoughts if its alright. My family has several siblings as well, and one sister will beat on one brother mercilessly when something doesnt seem to go her way, but it is inconsistent to the point that we can not tell why she does so. She does at times act vulnerable and scared as well as being one of the most outgoing and positive people outside of this relationship. She is only violent towards him, and no one else can make sense of why. Considering this I must pose the question- if a show that subverts tropes does this and Ive seen it firsthand, why is it so hard for others such as yourself to find it believable? Is it because the trope has been done to death, it has not happened in your life or a combination of both? When a show takes its characters seriously and does not do something for comedic affect I do seriously consider the implications for the characters, not only as I have seen things people dismiss as "impossible" but clearly it was left in there for a reason. Id rather not get into some of the bloodier one sided interactions I have born witness to, but one sided abusive sibling relationships are not as uncommon as Id like. At the point where this is an issue however you must ask if the person is a psychopath or if an outside source is causing undo harm to them, and they are using it as a release or were doing so and it became habit. It could be a defense mechanism but in both real life and the anime there are alot of times it doesnt logically line up.
@silvershadow56526 жыл бұрын
By the way I by no means enjoy this trope, but I figured in this particular case, as they take their time to show that everyones more than thier trope, I would stop and think about it in relation to my experiences. When its played for laughs or as a plot point it gets sooo grating, but when everything else as far as characterization in a show has a point it makes me wonder if it is as bad as things Ive seen in real life.

“Stop being lazy...” ....only when audience stop accepting mediocrities. Back in the 80s, analogy of in music publishing, companies sell what people are willing to buy...rap music, hip hop music. Studios will make garbage if audience keep buying tickets to garbage such as batman return and Bat v Sup and suicide squad and that Netflix Bright movie. Audience don’t offer accurate enough consumer feedback to the studio, also. Allowing a release to flop isn’t enough, people (most) aren’t sophisticated enough say “pacing”, “continuity”, “editing”, “character inconsistencies”. Lastly, going for the “males, 14-24” mean studios can recycle old ideas...tropes...to a fresh audience. This lead to the reason why profession movie and media critics have noticeably differing rating than the the common audience because pros “seen it all” as well as are trained to look at things differently. Lastly...I said that already. This time it’s true. YTer media critics, some are very sophisticated fans. They, like you, aren’t lazy passive consumer and do see good and bad patterns. Normal consumer may notice them consciously or not. Garbage out when audience bottom feed on garbage....such as jump scares in movies, more garbage out since that’s “scary” to “everyone”.

I think anime has anime tropes just because they are anime. And so that people are supose to laugh about it because it is a joke and not because of that the joke itself is funny.
@LunaLuckyLight7 жыл бұрын
As much praise as that anime gets, I was really turned off by the constant shift to derpface. Rather than making me take the scene less seriously, it made me take the character as a whole less seriously. I actually couldn't make it through the first episode, specifically because of the whistle scene. I was baffled and annoyed by her complete lack of reason and intelligence as a trait that warranted so much attention in the very first episode. I was thinking like, what sort of reasonable person acts like this? This isn't even funny. Artistically I didn't really even like derpface style, and I felt like the constant shift to it made it hard to enjoy this on a feel-good level. Maybe I should have given it more time, but I intensely disliked the presentation and was given no reason to believe it would change.

Anime is lazy with its tropes because they sell. Why fix what isn't broken from a financial standpoint?
@Otokogoroshi6 жыл бұрын
A lot of people responding to this video don't seem to understand the trope... like... at all. Yeah it's a lazy and stupid trope having a girl beating up a hapless guy character... but it isn't about misandry or anything dumb like that. The trope is based in several different ideas, 1. Girl's aren't supposed to be like that, 2. Watching a guy getting beat up by a girl is funny because it's so out of the norm (Both because guys are supposed to be strong and women weak and the social expectation of female behavior). The violence is also cartoonish and over the top to be extra silly, like Bugs Bunny dropping an anvil on Elmar Fudd's head. If the 'Guy trips and falls and gropes girl' trope dies and is never shown again in anything ever for the rest of humanity I'd say we're better for it. It feels like someone is just... ticking off boxes on a checklist when making an anime. So calm down people. It's not about a double standard. It's about cartoon physics, lazy tropes and regressive shit.
@junkyyard22735 жыл бұрын
Mhm It's just that the trope is misused and already a useless toothpick for the teeth. It's also for the fact NOTHING compensates for it. If the trope was reversed with the guy beating the girl, it's clear that most people would complain because "boys are not supposed to hit girls" or other stuff that corresponds to the so-called "misogyny" which is even bullshit considering the fact YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO HIT ANYONE UNLESS IT IS APPLIED IN SELF DEFENCE. Speaking of Bugs Bunny, it's meant for a more sincere cartoon-esque and comedic effect since that is the main focal point of the show unlike anime, who does it apparently for no fucking reason or whatsoever. I feel like the trope isn't bad per se, but the execution is just horrible and, if I can say, imprecise. I'd say, if y'all planning for an anime with these tropes, give it a twist or subversion to at least replenish and renew of how audiences view the trope.

They explained it though. Ai beats up Makoto because Makoto is weak, and she hopes that by being harsh on him, he can learn how to take harshness, and potentially man up at some point. Not the greatest justification, but it is there.
@junkyyard22735 жыл бұрын
Ai beats up Makoto because he is weak, but also thinks that sudden physical violence(or so-called "discipline") is a great way to start the lesson. You know, Tae Kwon Do professionals don't just hit their students and think "oh I sure do hope for him to survive a very hard hit blow in the head and expect him not to get brain damage". Dude, discipline should be a lesson learned for application and not by expectation. That reason is so ridiculous that it even made me wonder why that is a thing.
