Hello, My Grandfather regularly encountered The King when on his way to his place of work. The King enjoyed his morning carriage drive through London. My Grandfather described the King as a genial and friendly character, who would doff his hat to the working class people. My Grandfather was born in 1889. Good to be in touch........ Valerie.

What an amazing documentary, i love English history and Londons one of my favourite cities. My mother's sister was ill in hospital in London as a baby and King Edward visited the hospital and before he started his rounds he asked the nurse for a piece of string and took his wedding ring off and tied it on her crib to play with and another little story my grandfather was a tiler and worked for Mintons the tile company and he was sent to tile Lilly Langtry's bathroom in black and white tiles I'm not sure which residence that was, sadly I never got to meet any of my grandparents i would love to have spoken to him about a lot of things, eventually a group of labourers were sent out to SA from Mintons and he was part of a group that did the black and white tiling in the Jhb city hall, thanks for such an interesting documentary.

French society, although no longer a monarchy also had some really messed up rulers. Also Woodrow Wilson had his own (or perhaps the Freemason) agenda (who knows) but American society had recently taken a new turn (Wilson may have been riding the crest of those sentiments.)

With everything we know about her now thanks to the internet and books. If she would have given him some responsibility he might not have been that person that she despised. A wealthy man who's all doors were open to him and given no purpose she actually created in him what it was she didn't like about him. It sounds like Queen Victoria was a very selfish person ended think the Victorian air is supposed to be a role model when she even stayed away from her people and made her children's lives miserable. It's pretty amazing if you think about it that King Edward the seventh turned out to be such a good and different King then his mother. One bit of information I personally have not been able to find and I'm curious about. With George the fifth saying I was afraid of my father and I'm going to make damn sure my children are afraid of me. Especially its history makes it sound like Edward the seventh did was party and had mistresses so it doesn't seem he was around the children very often. I know times are different but everytime I read how young children were sent to work even his children at 12+ 9 going away to work it makes my heart break.

Surely Queen Victoria was behaving in a personally selfish manner by depriving her son of any significant role in governance once he showed more than enough talent to be helpful. It seemed as though she was perpetually punishing him for the early death of Albert, and connected his death to Edward's first affair with Nellie Clifton. As for George the Fifth however I am surprised to hear that he said that. I always thought that he and Edward had a very warm relationship, almost like siblings rather than a traditional father and son. If you've found anyting further about George's "fear" of Edward I love to know the sources etc.

My lack of punctuation can make it all string together. No one expected Edward VII to be a good King. Then he turned out to be one of the best. I totally agree with you I think Queen Victoria continue to resent Edward VII. I really enjoyed reading your comment. I've always found the British royal family to be interesting. Especially when history repeats itself. Personally especially what's going on in the 21st century I don't think I'd want to live that life. At the very least not want to be king or queen.

It was granted to Queen Victoria by the Government of Benjamin Disraeli in 1876 when she became Empress of India. The Queen mentions it in her Journal when she says she took pride in signing a document for the first time R.I. Thereafter, all the Sovereigns (who happened to be male) signed themselves R.I. Rex Imperator. This continued until 1947 when India gained independence. So the last Sovereign and Consort who signed themselves R.I. were King George VI and His Consort Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother). An interesting fact that shortly before midnight on 14th August 1947 as India became Independent at Midnight. His Majesty King George bestowed the Order of the Star of India onto his two daughters Their Royal Highnesses Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret. The Insignia was a particularly beautiful brooch of diamonds and other precious stones. I hope you found that interesting.

Very well done! Was he self-indulgent, etc in his youth? Of course he was - and continued to be throughout. But I'd say that was tempered in later life by his taking on the position of monarch & the realization OF that position. Too often, he's dismissed as JUST a "playboy" - and he WAS. When I first moved to San Francisco from Manhattan, a lot of buildings were described as Edwardian, which was both an architectural style as well as a period of time. This was partially due to the 1906 AD earthquake which required a lot of new construction. So now I know the Edward behind the period.

Prince Albert did not *take* the title "Prince Consort" on marrying Queen Victoria. Lord Melbourne advised the Queen that she should not award any titles at all to Albert other than "HRH". It was only 17 years later that this title was *granted* and he had a mere 4 years to enjoy it before his death.

I've been subscribed to The People Profiles almost since its inception. The content was good then, but over the last two years or so, it has become very excellent indeed. That having been said, there's a notable absence (or near-absence) of profiles of important artists, composers, writers, filmmakers and such, many of which tower above figures such as Edward VII. Some of these people also lived interesting lives, so there's little reason for them not to be profiled here. For example, several that immediately come to mind and who would fit the channel's target audience include Bernart de Ventadorn, Dante Alighieri, Guillaume de Machaut, Carlo Gesualdo, Rembrandt, Marquis de Sade, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Eadweard Muybridge, Wassily Kandinsky, Aleister Crowley, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky, Franz Kafka, Pablo Neruda, Dmitri Shostakovich, Orson Welles, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Yukio Mishima... As to the proposed question, I think it’s possible to be both. He was a notable philanderer and some of the ‘parties’ he attended in the country, when the husbands of his female entertainers were away, certainly resulted in unwanted pregnancies and divorces upon their husbands return, leaving these once privileged women thrown unceremoniously out of their homes. There’s an excellent documentary on the plight of some of these very women - obviously they weren’t all involved with Edward, but with his many friends who accompanied him and many pregnancies were covered-up by the women concerned ensuring relations took place with their husbands immediately upon their return, so if pregnancy occurred it would be assumed that the husband was indeed the father… As for his diplomacy throughout Europe, there’s no doubt that he helped smooth the way for the British government to maintain relations between themselves and France, Russia, India and Germany before the Kaiser died leaving his son to takeover. He was extremely popular and had an excellent sense of humour and gentleness about him that certainly drew people in.

Maybe he did have loose morals as a youth. But as a king, I think he grew up some and was a successful king but paid for the sins of his youth. I'd like to know more before I make a judgment on whether or not he was a good king.

New historical information (actually it is old, but well hidden so far) is being disclosed nowadays by academics in several European countries and the USA. It is quite likely that history will be re-written, as it was shaped, as always, by the winners of the wars. Edward VII. did what he could to support the British Empire by establishing diplomatic partnerships with countries that served this aim. And Germany as the eternal competitor was certainly not desired as an ally. Quite the opposite. Edward as the King was part of the powerful political association, but by far not the most important one. So focusing on men like Lloyd George, Churchill, Edward Grey, Alfred Milner etc. gives us much deeper insight in the politics of this time. Edward was an interesting character though, as we read. Charming and eloquent in several languages, but a catastrophe as a son, a student and especially as a husband.

I feel that Edward VII had a lot of unfilled potential. In hind-site, he was correct in not supporting the invasion of Denmark by Germany, and since he married Alex as a political alliance some thought should have been put into his position. Queen Vic was strict, authoritarian and imposed a harsh regime on a boy, who might have had ADHD in today’s world and certainly had a very gregarious nature.

The only reason he turned into a philanderer, is because his mother never gave him responsibilities. She was a control freak. She would hardly let Prince Albert help with Queen duties. So, as he was bored, I don’t blame him one bit. The womanizing., drinking, overeating, were replacements to make him feel worthy. They, the Royals, are born into something different. Its not just a family but a business. No one has a choice in what job they want or what schools they want to attend. All this is planned out before their birth. That isnt a life for everyone. But being born into it does make it harder to understand why 'the don't haves" see it as excessive.
