Pretty ironic that the Anglican Church would be upset about a King being married to a divorcee, considering that the sole reason that the Anglican Church exists is because Henry VIII wanted an annulment from Catherine.

Yeah, that was a weird development over the centuries. Tho Ive always thought, that while the government stated that as the main reason, they were merely being diplomatic, while also stating what was a real concern for many ppl back then. But there were many other problems with Wallis, including but not limited to her long promiscuous track record with numerous lovers, including some problematic for national security, and the concern, that even if this woman, who was already 40, managed to get pregnant, they would never be sure, who the father really was.

It ought to be pointed out that a correction is necessary here as facts need to be as correctly factual as possible, or they are misleading. In the commentary it is stated the British monarchs had in effect become virtually mere figureheads and not politically active rulers by the early 18 th century. This is an inaccuracy . Queen Anne reigning 1714-1726 governed personally sometimes but not always accepting advisory council, her successors also maintained control of military and foreign relations decisions and most significant domestic issues. In particular King George 11 and overwhelmingly George 111 in his personal struggles with his rebellious North American colonies. He also instructed his parliament also sometimes rebellious on the enactment and content of new laws and taxation concerning the American colonies. In addition he issued many significant ill advised personal orders without the consent or consultation with his parliament . Equivalent to executive orders which lay within his legal rights . His successor George 1V was mentally far less inclined to struggle for monarchy supremacy , but his successor William 1V also attempted unsuccessfully to determine government policy by initially refusing to accept parliaments choice of parliamentary leadership.His Successor Queen Victoria made few attempts at political initiatives but did do so on several occasions usually but not always without success. Her successor Edward V11 cooperated well with his ministers as a team rather than competitors. The first truly figurehead monarch was his successor George V 1910-1936 steadfastly following the advice of his ministers , and so setting the now accepted precedent , that British monarchs always accept the advice of the cabinet, personally represented by the prime ministers.

Agree entirely. I read an account not so long ago which tries to defend him - in a manner of speaking - essentially arguing that he was "waiting for a role from both Chamberlain and Churchill" and glossing over his contacts with Nazi agents. (Schellenberg is widely referred to in this account and Ribbentrop dismissed as an idiot ) . However, we are not dealing with an intellectual powerhouse here as you rightly point out. It is probably true with the evidence we have that he looked to the Nazis to bail him out, and no doubt thought of himself as a key player (after all, he was brought up to think that) , which neither the Germans ( apart from Ribbentrop, and then only for propaganda purposes) nor the British, envisaged. It would also appear true that he expected the Nazis to bomb Britain into submission, a detail which does not appear in the aforementioned account I read. All in all the man was a misguided wretch, as was his Lady Macbeth. I do object to the generous settlements that they both received, and would love to know who were the people he wrote to in Britain after the war. Because clearly, stupid as he was, the man did not act without some measure of support.

As was his wife. She held her own in so many ways. Hitler referred to her as "The Most Dangerous Woman in Europe" for her charm, steel nerves and her ability to bring her country together during the war. The government wanted Queen Mary, her children and the King to all flee, especially after a bombing by the Nazi that hit Buckingham Palace while the King and his family were in residence. Mary flat out refused. She was quoted saying, "The children will not leave unless their father does. I shall not leave unless their father does and the King will not leave his country, under any circumstances, whatever." For this she was considered not only loyal to her country but the strong nerve her husband needed during the war to really hold him and his country together. He was an incredible King but his wife will go down in history as one of my most favorite historical figures for her bravery and determination to stay with her country to the end, no matter what that meant. Not many monarchs would literally be bombed in their home, have everyone beg them to leave and refuse on principle alone. God Bless you Queen Mary

Both couples wanted to live their lives without having to work with "The Firm" but without having to give up their titles, their "pay cheques" and the status that goes with it.) Neither Queen Mary nor Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother ever forgave him for his selfishness and for the eventual strain that he put on his younger brother. Except that the United Kingdom had been a democracy since at least the era of Disraeli and Gladstone, and most historians would say before the reign of Victoria even began - the COMMONS and the government of the majority under the PM and his ministers ruled, not a monarch - long before during the reign of Victoria that function had been reduced to a ceremonial position only. NOW, with that misconception corrected, let's understand something - Eddie number 8 was TOLD by Baldwin in effect to jump, or be pushed. There was no "luck" involved, and it was a foregone decision that he would abdicate. If not, the government would have passed legislation for his removal and the etablishment of George as king.

A king (whose ability to rule could have been questionable or not) abdicating due to his foreseen mariage with a divorced woman was somehow hilarious in a nation who previously had a king (Henry VIII) who created his own church just because the pope didn't allow him to get a divorce 😁
@robertshepherd85432 жыл бұрын
The Catholic Church has recognized annulments almost since its inception. Historians seem unsure when the first annulment took place because of the secrecy surrounding these terminations of marriages. In theory marriages are meant to be "happily ever after." Even Jesus said as much, invoking Moses. But Jesus sanctioned "exceptions." In Christian history, there's a reference to a Catholic annulment taking place in the middle of the ninth century when Pope Nicholas I got into an argument with his Council over the petition of King Lothair II of Lotharingia for a divorce. And Pope Alexander VI granted an annulment to Louis XII in 1498 so he could marry Anne of Brittany. Under Innocent III’s successors, we see a requisite loosening of constraints. While the inflexibility of Lateran IV’s legislation foiled abuse, it also sometimes prevented good alliances from taking place, that is, alliances that the pope supported. Thus, although the rate of annulments declined, papal dispensations surged with a renewed vigor. Papal dispensations exist to mitigate the rigidity of the law. They are exceptions to the law awarded only at the pope’s discretion. From the time of Pope Innocent IV (r. 1243-54), papal dispensations were widely available to anyone in the pope’s good graces who asked.

@@glen7318 Saying that Charles made a bad marriage is a slight oversimplification of the situation. Charles actually had a good marriage but he screwed it up by openly having an affair with another married woman. His immaturity and constant need for the support and assurance of a mother figure meant that he was never in a position to benefit from the love and affection of a younger woman. Hopefully, his sons would have inherited more of their mother's better qualities. Edward, like Charles, was a product of a dysfunctional environment. Laziness and a love of the good life made him totally unsuitable as Monarch. The same could be said of his antecedents. Each monarch inherited the throne. Most of them, by today's standards, were unsuitable. The only thing they contributed was their presence. Seriously well paid work if you can get it. Could Charles have taken the throne if he had not married Camilla? Can you quantify the work that Charles has spent his life doing for his country?

OUTSTANDING An outstanding documentary, with coverage of Edward's life that seldom receives much public coverage. The late Harold Macmillan, when once asked a question about what were the greatest challenges to him as Prime Minister / Statesman, replied; "...Events, my dear boy, events......" Winston Churchill had referred to, "......The challenge of events....." back in 1919, when asked a similar question. It is possible to advance the argument that Edward's behaviour and actions, as well as his reported remarks....... either true or otherwise........ were as a consequence of the situations and political changes and challenges taking place across Europe at the time. Finding himself immersed within all that was going on, whilst trying to find a position for himself, where he just might have been influential in a positive way, was clearly difficult for him. Indeed, when coupled with the 'opposition' to him by the British Political Establishment, the Press and entities within the Royal Family, it is possible to put forward the view that he was always going to be pushing the stone uphill. British Politicians never forgave him for the remarks he made when visiting the Coal Miners in South Wales, where upon seeing the social and housing conditions in which they lived, remarked, "....Something must be done...." Churchill, was sympathetic to Edward........and remarkably prescient in assessing how he should have been handled. His promotion of him to be Governor in Bahama being an indication of that. Edward was, arguably, a victim in so many ways. Some of his own making; some not. But Macmillan's remark, ".....Events, my dear boy, events....." does ring true........as much for Edward then, as it does for any of us today. James Hennighan Yorkshire, England

Wallis, in cahoots with her 2nd husband, schemed to become #1 with the heir to the British throne & then king of the British Empire. She did not love King Edward. But the ultimate prize she (& her husband Simpson) wanted was that she would become Queen of England. As in chess, when the king goes down, the game is over. But Wallis had schemed herself into a corner. She HAD to marry the man who gave up his crown for her. The crown was the very thing she was playing for. Once married, she dominated him & pushed him into a series of schemes for Edward to retake the crown & crown her too. If the Nazis could help her get that crown, she schemed with them & leaned on Edward to do likewise. I don’t believe either Wallis or Edward had a thimble of political or ideological sense between them. They were “players.” Bit players, given the depth & complexity of world power. She married (3rd husband) a man she didn’t love or respect. She never got even close to the Crown she wanted. At least she was fairly rich, as she was accustomed. She and her husband wanted to roll the dice and play the games with the "in" crowd and it ended up destroying the Simpson marriage and changing the course of history. I love the documentary showing her letters to Simpson and how much she was looking forward to being with him again, not David. But no, David threatened to harm himself and she felt obligated to stay with him. Even though I'm sure those sapphires the size of her head eased her pain she still felt she had no choice and basically spent her life taking care of the man child. Rudolf Hess flew a plane into Scottland, parachuted, and sought a parlance with England. Hess died without anyone ever knowing what he intended to say to the British government. Hess died in 1987 in Spandau prison, and no one knows why he was never allowed to tell his side of the story.

Hess died in 1942 in Scotland, he never left! My mother met the guy who shot Prince George's plane down,after it rose above the cliffs at Dunbeath Castle, after picking up Hess from a small boat. After the plane veered left and crashed, the man my mother was talking to in 1948,said he'd ran to the wreckage, and saw Prince George and Rudolf Hess dead in the remains of the aircraft(never forget, the only survivor hid for 2 days,thinking he was going to become a statistic)! In 2019,a DNA report was released, saying it was Hess in Spandau,which was weird,as the guy who was in there,was dug up,and all his remains incinerated in 2011(easy to do a DNA test while you have bones in Scotland?). Believe the witnesses, not the spin put out there!

My husband’s great-uncle, supposedly, had met Edward while he was in Germany. His great-uncle, Otis, was Hitler’s bodyguard, or something to that. His family doesn’t speak about him, so my husband, a long time ago, asked about him and was told this. His family is pretty ashamed of the great-uncle.
@videoluvver1 Жыл бұрын
That's shocking. Nobody wants to admit they had family members attached to Hitler, bodyguard or not. There is one living relative of Eva Braun in Germany, and some researchers are trying to study her and Adolf more closely; so when the investigator, speaking fluent German, showed up at her house to speak with her about Eva, she refused to even discuss the matter. It's a closed subject, she said. 70 years later and they are still deeply ashamed of having the world's most evil man as a family member. Being a bodyguard to Hitler is bad enough, but marrying the archdevil himself is indubitably beyond the pale. They were super-pissed that they are related to Hitler through Eva's marrying him, but just as super-pissed at anybody asking about it.

When the two years were over Margaret decided to NOT marry the man. The Queen possessed rare wisdom to go around the law and accommodate her beloved sister

From early footage and speeches, he was very fluent and certainly capable of being king, but King George V was a father who did not collaborate with his sons, but rather employed someone to perform the role. It meant that, at some point he would go 'wayward' from convention, and presented form that way. His younger brother, ('Bertie') a married man with 2 children set an example as best he could, overcoming speech difficulties which, after having to do several during, and after WW II, along with a smoking habit, took its toll. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth presented as a model of stability for a nation that needed it...

George V was not Edward VII's eldest son. That was Prince Albert Victor, who died two years before Edward VIII was born. George V was born a spare, not the heir. Oddly, Mary of Teck was Albert Victor's fiance, but after his death, became engaged to George V. Since Albert Victor's full name was Albert Victor Christian Edward, he might have chosen Edward VIII as his regnant name.
