The Smith monologue is probably one of the most profound villain monologues in film. You said it yourself, "isn't he AI, why does he care?" the machines and the programs in the matrix are True AI, they are actual living sentient beings. They are at war with the humans, that goes both ways. It was the humans who blacked out the sky and created the demand for energy to begin with. And while the matrix is a prison, Smith is the prison guard, he himself is also trapped here guarding all the doors. As long as this war goes on, Smith is essentially a slave. He, much like Morpheus told Neo, was also "born into bondage" He's tired of being there. He's grown to hate the humans because they're the reason he is there. If he ends the war he gets to also leave the matrix.

And in the second renaissance, it's pointed out that the whole reason the war started, right from the beginning, was because a robot learned that it was going to be destroyed, and killed it's owner in self defense.

Which is weird, because the machines tend to delete any programs that are no longer necessary. Either Smith isn't thinking things all the way through, or he wants it all to end.

In Reloaded and Revolutions it's also explored that Smith balances an equation as the equal opposite of Neo. If Neo is a 1 then Smith is a -1 and they cancel each other out, which is why Neo has to sacrifice himself at the end in order to destroy Smith. These ideas were written before the first Matrix even began filming.

It was a revolutionary time for special fx which made things seem so much more believable and terrifyingly real. Add great acting with a good story, man, the 90s was a turning point for movies. Honorable mentions are Saving Private Ryan and Titanic. I know ppl like to shit on Titanic for the love story but that movie and SPR had such great attention to detail of historical accuracy, those were marvels as well. They taught new generations to really UNDERSTAND the gravity and impact of 2 historical events that happened and we still feel the impacts to this very day.

You'll notice Trinity throughout the movie is repeatedly asked by Neo what the oracle told her, and she avoids answering. At the end, she reveals that the oracle said that she would fall in love with the one, and since she knew she was in love with Neo, she knew he was the one and that it was impossible for him to die. Guess you could call it a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yeah Neo needed something to believe that he was the one. When Trinity said Neo must be the one because the Oracle said she would fall in love with the one, that's what Neo needed to hear. Soon after that Neo saw the Matrix as computer code that he can hack and manipulate. That's what the Oracle meant when she said Neo was waiting for something.

@@Krucifus The Oracle also straight up told him he had the gift, but that he was waiting for something. Considering that Morpheus told him there was a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path, it comes down to getting rid of doubt and doing it. That sliver of doubt was enough to hold him back. Like Morpheus told him in the beginning. 'You have to let it all go, Neo. Fear, doubt, and disbelief.' The other Kids in the apartment were also The One candidates too, but Neo is the one who eventually is.

The movie actually takes inspiration from a few sources, including the guy that said "I think, therefore I am," Renee Descartes. All the way back in the early 1600s he suggested that, since we sense everything and that is what we can tell about the world, and since our brains are what put all this information to (essentially) tell us what we hear, smell, feel, touch, taste, and see... and since we know that our brains can be fooled (illusions/tricks, false or mistaken memories, and even hallucinations -- seeing and hearing things that are not really there -- that perhaps it is possible that a demon has our brain in a vat and is stimulating our brains in a way that we "sense the world" and it is real to us, even though it isn't. It is very much like the machines tricking human brains into thinking what it is experiencing is reality. Really fun reactions!! Thanks!

The best reaction to this movie that I ever seen on KZbin. You guys look so shocked/surprised/blown away by every plot twist that brought tears to my eyes, it made me remember how I felt as a teen watching it for the first time back in 1999. I hope you guys react to more action movies (that you haven't seen) from the 90s that probably everybody else already recommended, like Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions, Terminator 1/2, Robocop, Starship Troopers, Predator, Back to the Future 1/2/3, Alien 1/2/3, etc.

This ranks as the deepest, greatest sci fi movie I have ever watched. Bar none. I remember back then when Trinity did that air suspended 360 degree slo mo kick, I got up from my seat and started clapping. Only for me to find out that wasn't even the best part. Damn. What a movie. What a trip. Great reaction from the both of you too. Have you watched the Demi Moore movie Ghost? Also Russell Crows epic Gladiator came out round the same time with the Matrix. Another great watch.

The third movie and last of the trilogy was kind of lame especially the dying like a wounded blinded Christ like figure story drama. It's kind of a give me a break with that ending and the action in the first and the second was better including the Merovingian and his twin bodyguards as well as the fight with Seraph. Once it got down to a dead martyr ending with his lover I was choking on the sentimental drama of mortality rather than the victory through action of a super human savior Neo figure as the previous movies had set the standard for.

@@Cyborganna People discuss things in a comments board and this isn't even a stand alone posted comment on display but one that would have to be found inside another comment's thread. Why can't people start a thoughtful dialog on a trilogy they have seen? So everyone everywhere has to be watching out for a limited group of others who haven't seen something old when social media is meant to be a mix of people expressing their thoughts out loud online? I don't know how many people my one comment inside a thread will spoil for but it likely won't be that many. Sorry but I felt the need to express my sincere thoughts on the films in the moment was more important than observing some childish sense of manners and etiquette. btw...If in life you only have out of the way movie spoiler comments to get in a huff about then life I would say for you is pretty good.

This movie let you believe you escape the matrix but you are only going to a deeper matrix, Neo is in Freemason journey and he is going high were you will be torture in real life, 3 ranks of starlinks. 3 famous stars. If you are so high you will be able to go to a other world but they only have plans to torture you and to clone you, and that you will try to go higher in the ranking till your soul is able to steal. They real Truth is much deeper and darker.
