If bees are swarming, they are too busy to sting you. You just stand calmly and they fly around you looking for their new place. I've done it several times. If their current home has been disturbed, it's different, as then they will be pretty grumpy. Running is pointless.

My lady and I was once working out the yard gardening. I was weed wacking and bumblebees started swarming me. I took the weed wacker and chopping them up. Too many was coming at me and I ran past my lady telling her to run. She said they're not after me. I said RUN! I got into the house, she got stung 3 times on the top of her head before she got in the house. I didn't get stung once. RUN!

Running was fine, but her slapping at them is likely what made them start stinging and then they smelled the pheromones, alerting them to "danger" and started stinging anybody. Also if a single bee is hovering around you, blowing gently on them can make them buzz off. They detect our breath and realize we aren't a flower

I remember one time I was at my dads house by the lake I grew up at. It was late summer, around 6 in the evening. I was just sitting on the porch while my step mom was getting dinner ready. When all of a sudden my late cat, who was lounging on the porch with me, suddenly puffed up really bad and started growling. She looked to my right and just kept staring. At that moment I could hear the neighbors start screaming for everyone to get inside because a massive bee swarm was coming in. I couldn't see the bees but I could hear them. I grabbed my cat, who scratched me pretty bad because I spooked her and threw her inside. I told my step mom to close all the windows because the bees were coming fast. We barely managed to get all the windows closed before the swarm came on top of us. For 10 minutes, it was just non stop buzzing.
