I so look forward to watching it come together. ❤ As an aside, damask is a style of weave (reversible pattern) and silk is a fiber, so you can have silk damask, polyester damask, etc. And you can have silk satin, silk moire, knit silk, etc. Either way, damask backing will look lovely.

Regarding above the book cases and panelling - I suggest you could tie everything together with a large piece of trim in the neo-classical style. (Think coving but not actually touching the ceiling. This would create (or support) a shelf that runs around the room. On the shelf you could put knick-knacks and small statues or busts, vases or whatever else you find in antique stores. Alternatively, a lower profile moulding could be used and the space above the bookcases used for paintings. Although, not to the same scale as the Library, my fraternity house's dining room (built 1896) had 7-foot high panelling and 10-foot high ceilings. The space above the painting was filled with class photographs from past decades. I don't imagine you can find group photos of nuns but a unifying theme to the artwork, each lit with a directed spot, could look nice.

If you’re willing to spend extra money on panelling above the bookcases, you could opt to instead have wainscoting panels made for the entire room (including the window recesses), at the same height as the cases then wallboard the top of the wainscoting.

You're doing a fantastic job getting the library to fit into this room properly! It's finally starting to take shape. If it's more cost effective, I think adding plasterboard above the bookcases would be totally fine with some beautiful coving at the top. But if you really want more oak panels above the bookcases, I support that too. I'm really glad you're changing the fabric out with something more bold. Red damask sounds lovely. 😍👏👍🍺

Billy, are you planning on putting artwork in the library? If you put really nice (and expensive) oak paneling above the cabinets, hanging artwork would hide the oak. Plasterboard it, find some lovely landscapes or even old photography of the area, and place them above the cabinets.

I know you want to put oak panels on top of the book cases, but what about colour matching the red damask to a red paint and just using a medium large oak casing around the top of the boxes. If the ceiling is going to be white the red will contrast sharply with the ceiling and will make the room look taller. I think it would look sharp in there. In the end you choose of course but could save a few euros. 😊

I am not trying to design for you however have you seen the Topline Epoxy chips blend concrete paint flakes in the colour Tenton. It would run nicely into the hardwood floors. Again you may save a few euros.

Considering none of the walls are 100% square, you're doing an amazing job. I'd have torn my hair out half way around the room! That laser level is such a nifty piece of technology. The ghosts of builders through the centuries are probably swearing a blue streak! Rather than a big panel above the cases, what about a carved framing straight across the top to separate the shelving from the drywall? Maybe a vine and leaves raised relief frame?

Billy, I would just put plasterboard above the shelves & paint it to blend with the fabric you’re using. Make prints from your book of chateaus framed in matching oak. That would give you the richness you’re looking for. Kinda of the reverse of your shelves.

With you putting insulation on the outside wall. But the fact that you don't put insulation behind the book cases. Mean they will cold surface in a warm room . This will leave to condensation to the wood and books. Giving a musty smell to the library.

Are you going to put a moisture barrier, like a sheet of plastic or a specially treated paint, applied to the wall behind Library cabinets to protect Library cabinets ? Don`t forget you need to protect the books too. moisture kills books.

Some push-to-open cupboards hidden behind the new oak panels would make for amazing storage of artefacts, oddments, tech gear, old books for display rotation (keeps them from being destroyed by heat and light on the shelves), excess dining ware and so on! It is going to look amazing!

Billy…kindly spend a few minutes describing how the library cabinets will be incorporated into the finished walls covering the stud work. Will the drywall be plastered or covered with wood paneling? Will the cabinet face frames be flush with the finished wall surfaces? How will you refinish the cabinet faces and doors (Osmo coating, rose gold wax, etc,?). Do you plan to have a seating area in the middle where the scaffolding is currently situated? This will give your viewers something to look forward to as the library comes to fruition. Thanks

Billy…. If there is a space above the new paneling above the cabinets and shelves, consider installing an entablature (architrave, frieze and cornice….in oak of course!). With a room of that height of 16’, the entablature height would be about 2’-0” (10” cornice, 7” frieze and 7” architrave). I recall you had hundreds of pieces of trim and expect that some of that trim came from an entablature at the ceiling wall intersection.

Of course, it’s your vision so do what you think is best. But putting the paneling above the bookcases may make the room a bit dark, especially on dark and rainy days. I know there are lots of windows, and it’s a big room, but the plasterboard would break up all that wood. Just a thought. From dark and dreary Ohio.

Didn’t notice until today. Sorry. But if you had put the library cabinets on wood planks (2x4) and then put insulation down you wouldn’t have cold air coming from under then. Billy, you havent covered how many panels you have but could you make more from left over odd sizes by joining two cut ones to make the size you need, would save having to use new oak.

The plan is wonderful but I think you will need insulation and a moisture barrier behind the cupboards and panelling. With no air circulation you don't want mould or rot.

You could very easily duplicate the moulding from the panels onto the plaster board above the cases, you could even use the same fabric inside the moulding frames on the plaster board to tie it all in together.

consider drywalling inside some of the cavities and leaving those panels on hinges. It makes for some great storage. For keeping some things out of the dust. or book related tools acessories

Billy, rather than more custom oak paneling for the walls above the bookcases, consider replicating the style of the paneling on the plasterboard walls with fiberglass moldings. When painted to match the walls, one can't tell that it is fiberglass and not wood. I think it would give you the finished look you want, visually tying the walls to the bookcases, and not be as expensive or as dark and heavy looking as wood paneling.
