You get a really bad water and dirt trap on each side where the three roofs meet. Small water collection areas with a deep horizontal valley where stuff can accumulate and soak up the water. This will create an infinite water intrusion point. Even if it makes things more complicated, make the valley, created by the tree roofs, to a 10° slope to the outer edge. And/or add an access point (door) to that part of the roof. So it can be cleaned easily later on.
@benitaletnes798715 минут бұрын
Yes! Just ask Rob and Leslie at Chateau de la Grifferaie! They have an access hatch that Rob has to use often. It is a pain for them as water damage, due to compacted leaves impeding water flow, is a real challenge.
@paulrosa617341 секунд бұрын
He couldn't build that roof in the Northeast USA. It would have problems with ice buildup under the shingles and would probably rot out in a few years. But it's amazing how some of the older buildings, especially in Britain, like the more ancient stately homes, have these deep valley roofs, sometimes for the length or width of the house. It doesn't seem to happen as quickly if ever. They used a lot of lead sheets wrapped up both sides and soldered to seal the seams.. Maybe the fact that the roof is taller than the trees he may not have as much problem with leaf litter and dirt as you point out? Maybe in those old buildings they are so used to leaks and rot they don't notice until it does serious damage? I don't think the chateau is going to get a lot of snow. Last winters videos seemed to show no more than a few inches all winter..What you're advising sounds like "a "cricket" ( what they call them around here) to provide some slope. Small segments of roof at the bottom of the valley forming a sloping floor. They don't have to be heavily framed but provide a slope to the gutters or a drain just as you advised. Covered in generous flasking up both sides of the more vertical roof surfaces. The door sounds like a great idea or they have to keep the climbing gear handy. I want to see where and how they are going to drain it. Those valleys aren't close to the edges of the house. They appear to be trapped between the various roof slopes. Are they going to have to have a drain pipe running through the internal spaces of the house? If they have to do that it could be another problem if that pipe ever plugs up.
@duanemiller56062 сағат бұрын
You really should do something about that deep V on the room side of the pitched roof. It will allow water to infiltrate into the roof and walls. On the tower side, it will go around the tower not a problem and the solution is actually pretty easy for the other side. You make a triangle that goes from the top of your roof, running perpendicular to the hallway from the tower to the room over to the roof for the room. That line should be completely horizontal then chalk line down the two sides of the valley of the two roofs to the outside corner of the roof for the big room. Put some rafters or stringers or whatever you wanna call them from chalk line to the other chalk line and then cover with plywood. This will give you a sloped edge to stop snow and water from piling up back in that corner. You would have no indication of this on the tower, but it was probably there on the old wooden roof structure that burned away. Whenever you have two sloped roofs creating a blind valley or a Long valley you should always put a pitch slope between them going in the direction that the valley goes from front to back or side to side so ice and snow and rainwater won’t back up get under the shingles and then into the building.

Bringing roofs together is no easy task. Be aware that valley gutters often cause leakage problems. If you can prevent valley gutters then you should try to do so. Another little reminder; make an 'easy' access to the roof somewhere, otherwise you will have a problem getting to it later. Great job bringing all the roof trusses together.

Been pondering that sharp inside corner on the roof. If the level framing was left for the inside but a second frame was kicked out to intersect at a flat angle, it would add a peak at the center but the intersection would slope and reduce debris buildup. The outside sheeting either side of the center would still be a flat plane. The interior surface still a flat plane. Layout would be to go to the center. Measure out 20cm or so and snap a new line for each stringer to intersect. Yes, each would have to be cut at a compound angle at the base. Just, I believe long term maintenance would be reduced. As is, I thing an annual sweep would be required.

It is always exciting to have various circumstances to consider when making decisions. Do we build it like this or like that. Once you have the rooms useable I think you will appreciate the way you decided to frame those roof areas. Great job, respect for all those times you used your laser level and made the right call. Well, I would have to be there to inspect it to really give an opinion. For a few years my job was going over plans and making sure all the framing elements were structurally proper while following the plans as closely as possible. I can pick any job apart.

They’ll have a long winter before they can do more roof work. On projects this big you have to work with the weather you’ve got, not wait a whole season until the weather permits. Besides, it’s not actually dried in until there’s windows and doors, and there are plenty of those to go around.
