Very cool to hear the range of topics that people hit you up for advice. You have the knowledge, but more important than that- you are an honest person and that comes across. I guess the comment I made that you responded to was continuing the analogy I made between cars and pianos. Both complex machines with many moving parts, but you can take your "old" Ford or Toyota to just about any garage and if they have the skill and parts, they can hand you back a pretty much "new car." A skilled piano re-builder can do the same thing (even more so because pianos predate cars by - what? 100 years? 200 for Harpsicords and whatnots?) The thing is, some car companies at the top end of things DEMAND you send your new car to them for service, or you void every condition of ownership. Rolls Royce, McClaren and Bugatti expect you to ship your wheels to them for tire changes! Forget about even changing a spark plug yourself. My feeling is Steinway is merely trying to plug into that kind of "exclusivity" with their product. That's sad to me, because their marketing is going to end up selling it as a luxury consumer item rather than excellent instruments with superior sound quality. To continue the analogy, Ferrari's aren't nearly the best or most reliable car (by a long way), but the name is the most valuable brand on earth now.

Buying a used piano seems much more daunting than buying a used car... not that it’s all bad things, it’s also because James keeps showing us so many cool pianos! Thanks for producing these entertaining pianos review videos James!

Yes, a series of answering questions would be nice. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't know what he doesn't know about pianos etc. and can learn from others questions.

Great video! :) This series would really be useful for a lot of people so I hope you continue it. Here's a question if you do: What piano brands would you recommend for music from the romantic period? Any models in particular you've played? Thank you!
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I would not think of any piano in particular for a certain period of music, pick the piano that sounds the best for you, and you will enjoy whatever music you play.

Being able to watch someone who has experience and knows what they are talking about is as important as hearing them play. I love the Daniel Barenboim series “Five minutes on...” not because of what he plays but what he says. It’s the same with you. I’m saving for a Kawai Novus NV10 partly because of your review. Your video’s on the Steinway parts issue have been really interesting. This stuff is valuable to viewers. Q&As are an extension of that and they are much easier to edit; so as a video producer it’s low hanging fruit. Keep it up.

James, thanks so much for sharing your insight and prognostications with the KZbin community. Near the end of this presentation, you referenced Hammond (A100, B3, ETC.) organs. I am an older, B3, gospel organist, here in Northern Chicagoland. Have you any presentations regarding the role(s) Hammond has played in the evolution/perpetuation of many genres of music. We, a large, all black church, can't have service without a Hammond. Is this topic outside the direction you want your channel to go. Sincerely, Rev. GE

I personally don't know how or why black congregations embraced the Hammond sound, but thank God they found each other! So much great music, both gospel and secular comes from that tradition. How can humans hear a joyful noise being made and not be uplifted by it? I thank you for reminding me.

Thanks. I compared the YX7 with a bosendorfer grand and I clearly prefer the sound and touch of the X7 in spite of the fact that the Bosendorfer was bigger. Thats why I asked you if you have compared a big grand with X7.Best

Thanks. OK then for next time ........ It is understandable today with the market prices where they are for the highest end of piano's that manufacturers put in the efforts to make "the" best though it very well may come down to personal taste. Having said that, then is there a specific era of one manufacture only where they are / were considered by most as "the best of the best? And since that also may have been the case at the time during that era when the piano was new, is there still that same "best" as time passed, assuming the piano has been maintained and or restored properly. Example: Bechstein 1965 - 1975 were the best new piano ranges. The Yamaha U1 is the most sought after used piano.

Not sure if you want another way message you since I didn't see where to message your KZbin channel. But if you could do a video of the transacoustic Yamaha C3X Ta2 I'd like your thoughts on this. I did recently buy one based partly on your good review of the Yamaha C3X. The transacoustic I think adds a lot of variety of voices and layered sounds with the transacoustic voices and the acoustic string resonances. I thought the digital samples of the piano voices sounded better when layered with the acoustic hammers than when they were alone from the transducers. You having played the CFX and Bosendorfer pianos are in a better position to evaluate that than I am. Ultimately, given the full trade in I get with Classic Pianos, I might consider upgrading to the C5X, C6X or C7X silent models depending on how the voices sound over a speaker system compared to the transacoustic transducer induced soundboard recreations. Thanks again.

Are all Hamburg Steinways “Steinwases” because of their action? What about NY Steinways with Kluge keys? I thought authentic Steinways only have Steinway parts. Asking for a friend.
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 4 жыл бұрын
Currently, Hamburg Steinways use Renner actions, as they have been for many decades. Steinway recently bought Renner. In addition, Steinway has been doing business with Kluge for over a century, and in 1998 the Kluge company was also purchased by Steinway. Steinway would likely consider both Kluge and Renner to be "Steinway parts", especially now that they own both companies, even though neither Kluge or Renner are exclusive to Steinway. This may change in the future, in my opinion.

hi james my question is. does Yamaha make organs? I just heard that they will have in our organ class room. soon as lowrey organ co closed. the new students will learn to play them.
@ThePianoforever
@ThePianoforever 5 жыл бұрын
Yamaha used to have the Electone line of organs, with two or three manuals, and a pedalboard. If they make organs today, I had no idea. Most of their keyboards have organ sounds in them, though.

The Yamaha CFX, and the Fazioli F278, and Fazioli F308 (King), Bluthner Model 1, and others are all now ahead of Steinway D.

This is the logical comparison but the X7 is a very special piano, different from Cfx.

August Forster builds good quality pianos. They have a nice tone, a good bass register, and plenty of sonic power. They are quite rare here in the USA. I have only seen one, and that was many years ago. Here is a link kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4rGdqamitt7orM to a video of Anastasia Huppmann playing the Mephisto Waltz by Franz Liszt on an August Forster concert grand piano.

DX7 outdated? I would say FM synthesizers are very alive.
@studiosnch

Hi James! I would like to send my two cents on your thoughts on some instrument sounds being "outdated". I beg to object your thoughts on the Yamaha DX7 e-piano (and by extension all other related sounds from the 70s and 80s) to be named as "outdated". In fact, if you do have the time, please listen to synthpop and artists like The Midnight, Timecop1983, Kalax, FM-84, and other amazing synthpop artists, many of whom were born after the said time period. Other novel genres such as vaporwave also use music from this time period and give them a fresh coat of paint or wipe the dust off through remixing. Now I don't know if you personally like this musical genre but even if do not, please try listening into it for even just once: currently Kalax's remix of The Midnight's "Los Angeles" (which you can listen to here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKS2pX-ojNWiY5o) Yes, there is a sense of "kitschiness" in the Yamaha DX-7 E-piano or the Roland D-50 Soundtrack patch that makes them "outdated" or ill-fitting in today's musical tastes, but many younger listeners, me included (who is classically trained but plays the piano now mostly for band accompaniment), love to listen to music played on such sounds to (curiously enough) yearn for a time when "things were easier" and the only threat is nuclear annihilation (which is by itself already apocryphic), even though we were not born in such an era. Anyway I thank you and your presence for making these videos! I'm currently reinvigorating the pianist in my thanks to your videos (and to the anime "Your Lie in April" as well, both of which are a godsend during this quarantine period) and I look forward for more amazing content from you!

awpdog, I think it is true that some sounds stand the test of time better than others. I think it would also help to understand that I come from a classical piano background. I will include a link from a instrument that I own that was made in 1973 performing a cover of a song from 1971. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2mxmq1jZ52IZqs
