Early on I wasn't having any fun with E:D. Then when I was nearly broke, I traded in everything on a DBX - best I could afford was a class D FSD - so I stepped into the black with only 24 light years of range and without the cash to re-buy if it all went wrong... It took me over a year to make it to Colonia, via Sag A. When I turned in the data I went from dead broke to filthy rich. With my newfound wealth I could do anything I wanted in just about any ship I wanted.... Within a week I was back in my DBX - there's another word for this ship - "home"

I bought the DBX because I saw it and thought "Oh, this thing thinks it's an attack helicopter, that's cute." Then I inadvertently exited the bubble one evening, and I realized that it doesn't think it's an attack helicopter, it *knows* it's a tiny boat, leaning face-first into the unknown, and in its heart beats the same human spirit that steered the Beagle, the Victoria, the Golden Hind. The DBX is discovery and wonder and a willingness to sacrifice everything to learn more. "i don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me."

I love the "rickety ship that's punching way above its weight"-feel that the Dimondback Explorer has. It's got weird quirks: some systems don't entirely match with what you'd expect, the hardpoints are all over the place, the margins for error are small, and it's got the interior space and comfort of a student flat. But I'd argue it's got this sense of personality, this charm, this spirit of independence exactly because of its quirks.

The DBX will always have a special part in my heart, this little ship took me around the galaxy and back. It's got it's quirks, the powerplant barely gives enough charge to do all you need to, you'll be fighting the mass limits to get that full suite of exploration equipment you need in it (expecially when you engineer it), that fuel scoop will have you sitting on stars longer than you ideally want to. And yet, this is my all time favourite exploration vessel, it does all it needs to do, and it does it well. Its quirks may make it feel like you're in a rustbucket that's always one missed maintance check away from disaster, but so was Serenity and to me it's got that same character to it, that same sense of pesonality that makes her not just a ship, but a home.

Go back, sold this overgrown snake, dust off old good friend DBX, restock and again into black. Very good exploration ship - small enough to fit in canyons and land successfully. I know this video is a few years old, and many people might not see this, but if you do here's a piece of advice. To get the materials you need, you can pick up the lightest refinery to not cut into your jump range and pack a single class 1 mining laser. All the materials needed for AFMU refills can be mined from asteroids and having two AFMUs means one can fix the other should one get too damaged. Not interested in keeping any cargo? Just jettison the stuff you don't want to keep. You could also stock up on the mats before going out into the black. I'm not much of an explorer though I have gone to Colonia in the Dawn Treader (my DBX) and DEFINITELY needed to stop off a time or two to make repairs, restock mats etc.

Any exploration ship is going to be limited by the integrity of its power plant, since that's the only thing that can't be AFMU'ed. DBX can still double-AFMU and still get an SRV in there, so it can still hang until the power goes out. The DBX is the living example of "Why fly a bigger ship when you can't enjoy flying a bigger ship". The more I fly smaller ships, the more I wish we could move around our ships and enjoy the extra space, to chill around an uncharted earthlike without being grafted to the chair like it was coach in a United Airlines flight.

I really enjoyed this video, your descriptions of why exploration is so compelling got me a little choked up. I think you're right, that it's a symbol of the desire to explore, and that makes this weird little ship beautiful. I went to Colonia in a DBX, and the sense of vulnerability from being in a small ship lent an edge of fear to the whole trip. I also ended up imagining that it was rather cramped in there. What with the internal slots packed full of survival gear, I'd be rolling out my sleeping bag on the floor of the cockpit. Not much room for amenities, either, maybe just a mini-fridge and a microwave. I figure I'd eaten a lot of bagel-dogs and hot pockets on that journey. Also, if you take an SRV, you can always prospect for additional materials for synthesis on planets. Not being able to repair your power plant is probably the one thing that might force you back to the closest station. As other people mentioned, having another power plant would be useful, but maybe you could also have some kind of battery with limited charge, just enough to run the AMFU for a bit before you have to recharge it.

I bought a Diamondback Scout as my first combat ship. I realised it was a good jumper compared to the Vulture I got right after I made some millions and more for outfitting the said Vulture 'cause I quickly realised how abysmal the jumprange was. I yearned for something with a better jumprange. I couldn't go back to my DBS (The Promise), it felt like I betrayed him :( Days later I returned from a hazres as usual and decided to do some courier missions with my Cobra (Firstborn). While waiting for the ship, I decided to browse the shipyard, I found there was a DBX on sale. I wondered why it had that "explorer" on its name when there was a "scout". I decided to check on KZbin for the ship's review and found this video. I sold Ardour, my Vulture, in a heartbeat and bought the DBX. I wasn't sure if it was the best idea at the time, but I knew I didn't want that 15ly of jumprange I had with the Vulture. My Khador Drive (DBX), has seen me and been with me when I raided and pillaged settlements, surface prospecting for hours on end for raw materials, jumped into systems to find unidentified signal source for engineering materials, hack megaships, travel together to DSS an ELW 150Klys from entry point and more. It's been two months since I purchased Khador Drive, two months on and off unlocking engineers, doing combat in a cz with my Imperial Courier, doing cargo runs with my disgusting Type 7 (Rejected Cornerstone). We've finally engineered his FSD to grade 5, along with some other couple of engineering that we could do within our limits. Yesterday, with fully loaded optional slots and 53ly of jumprange, we set out into the black to a random star in a nebula close to the edge of the Inner Orion spur. We're using it as a stepping stone before we go to Colonia. We're 300ly into our journey and the first planet we landed on, I got the "first footfall". I didn't think I'd like a ship as much as I'd liked my DBX. I cherish him a lot. • Khador Drive is the name of an equipment from a 2009 space sim game, Galaxy on Fire 2 (my favourite game 2nd only to E:D) that allowed players to jump to any part of the galaxy without the need for jumpgates.

Been flying a DBX since I could afford one. Two and half years later, I've been to the Crab Nebula, The Zurrara, Colonia, Beagle Point, the farthest system from Colonia, Distant Worlds 2, and I'm still not back from DW2! I've even landed on the highest gravity landable planets and survived an accidental drop! I undersized the fuel tank to a C4 to get 2-3 extra light years of single jump range, and never had a problem. Over 66ly of jump carrying a dual SRV bay, prismatic shields, and a rail gun (used for fuel dumping). Best explorer out there... ... Just wish I could trade the space I'm not using for the bigger fuel tank for a bigger fuel scoop. oof

fuel dumping?
@johnderouen10384 жыл бұрын
@@stiimuli Railguns can be given the experimental effect "Plasma Slug" which allows them to use ~25 kg of fuel per shot, instead of ammunition, at the cost of 10% damage. Useful for dumping fuel, as mentioned, and also improves sustainability in combat zones, as instead of having to return to a station to get more ammo, you can just supercruise down to the star, scoop some fuel, and fly back to the CZ.
@francisj.rivera95324 жыл бұрын
stiimuli apparently you could extend your jump range by dumping fuel. Fascinating mechanic

My ship’s name is "Hoooooonk". I Spent three years traveling to Beagle Point, exploring beyond that star, and just enjoying the wiew of the milky way behind me, listening to some music, watching anime, reading, and much more. I put a huge priority to the free camera on my bindings. And that’s my only ship with a custom livery, engines, and logos all over the place, just to look cool next to all the features that i screenshot I have one billion credits, and i don’t know where the hell i am supposed to spend them. I don’t need any other ship. I need a larger galaxy

This comment weirdly resonates with me. The last year I was absolutely crazy about Elite, sunk hours into the game searching for something to do, which was fun and profitable. Discovered passenger missions, and started running those in a dolphin. Accidentally selected one of those super long contracts, and realized I perhaps bit off more than I could chew, but still decided to put some anime on the second monitor and get to it. Never ran another mission after my return. Bought a DBX, engineered it with as much as I had on hand and headed out. Currently my ship is sitting just off Beagle Point, waiting for my return. I planned to circle the galaxy and come back home, but now I wonder if I really should, go back that is. The calm of cruising through space with freecam on the milky way and a random show on in the background is something I've missed for a while. Anyhow, sorry for my reminiscing, your comment just reminded me of my own journey XD Regardless, I hope the galaxy is treating you well, commander o7

This video caused me to re-download the game and immediately sell my other ship to buy one of these. Took off without rebuy for the nearest neutron star. Two years later and I took my fully engineered phantom all the way back from my new home in Colonia to pick up my old girl and take her for a little ride until my afmu runs out.

I'm not much of an explorer, more of a combat pilot, miner, and BGS player... But if I had to fly an explorer, my choice would be this or the Phantom. I had one years back called Superstar Highway, was a lot of fun flying that out to the rim and back 😁

@Quicksilver_Cookie5 жыл бұрын
That is not a skybox glitch. That's just how stellar forge works. It does look wonky, but that's how it is. And it isn't fixable at this point really since that would imply regenerating whole regions of a galaxy again. On why it works this way you could watch FD's discovery scanner episode on stellar forge, and you will understand why it looks the way it looks.

I adore this ship, before I even bought the game I was researching the ships and I wanted to get this and the dolphin to decide if I preferred the sleek or the rugged looks. I made my way up doing some trading and got the explorer, used it as a trading vessel for a while, then got a dolphin and used it as a passenger ship with some exploring on the side. Spent about a week before realising how much I missed the dbx. It’s just perfect for me.

As an explorer this ship is my most favorite. After obtaining enough money for it, A class fsd and D class other internals, 4A fuel scoop, srv, afm and advanced discovery scanner, i went with it to SAG A and had the most fun I ever had in ED. Its not perfect but I didnt mind by then at all and this ship is really what made me love ED so much. Always so glad having any kind of excuse to fly it again.

As someone who's been flying a DBX practically since I first acquired it just after my first week of playing, I can firmly say you've absolutely nailed the feeling you get flying this beauty. It makes you just want to go further into the black than anyone else has, even though that bar moves further with every successful attempt. You don't end up minding the distance. Because you're not alone out there. You've got not just your ship, but a friend. One who shares your passion to see everything the galaxy has to offer. Hell, I've flown thousands of lightyears outside the bubble only to become stuck when my FSD finally gave out and I had to call the fuel rats to deliver materials to repair. It was hours just sitting there, but I didn't mind the wait. In fact, it was one of my best experiences in this game to date. Just sitting back after putting out the request and thinking back on just how far I'd come, the things I've seen, the untouched worlds I've visited. And I can firmly say, that thirst to explore still isn't quenched. I don't think it ever will be. So out into the black we go. Just me, the stars, and my friend, the Forward Unto Dusk. And I don't know if I'll ever, ever, come home.

Wonderful video as always but this one is truly beautiful. A fitting close with the FSD charging too. I hope they add more ships so we never run out of your reviews. Watching this one 3/4 through a trip omw to Beagle Point. While I've never gotten my DBX over 75.9ly personally, it's a great way to get lost in the deep black.
