It probably could have been handled differently but the other side would have needed to be reasonable. The way they split was necessary for today to be possible. Not every situation can be salvaged. RC is a HUGE asset to The Piviot. Having ESPN as a platform allows him to make connections with these great guests. Not only that; RC has to be someone that the guests feel that they can trust. Channing and Fred are great with the guests as well, but it seems that RC has to reel in the big fish to make it all happen.
