How to Fix a Leaky Jeep Commander Sun Roof

Just wanted to drop a huge thank you for this video. Like your wife the only car I was even looking at were commanders. I paid an extra thousand for the wonderful sunroof issues too because I had to have the darned things. Mine was leaking same spot on the passenger side. I had already pulled the floor boards and carpeting to expose the nipple however it was already modified. I was completely frustrated with it until I came across this video. I used the CLR, hot water and I actually used a cheap transfer pump I purchased a while ago to take care of a radiator flush. It worked perfectly and perfect timing because it’s been storming like crazy here in Ohio and my cars been soaked :(

I just bought a 2009 Jeep commander 5.7 HEMI overland. It's loaded and I love how it drives. I agree with you that it's the only vehicle I'd drive no matter how old it gets 😌

Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video. It was very helpful! After looking at the blue drain tube, it seemed fine. I widened the end of the gromet opening in the floorboard. Before trying air, because the tubing i had wasnt stiff enough to snake the hole, i used a small "drain weasel" from the hardware store. This is a flexible plastic rod with velcro covering it to grab the gunk. When i heard that sucking water noise i knew i was in business. Worked great! Thanks again!

There is a drain on the passenger side too, so make sure you do both sides

I have looked up the schematics for my Jeep Commander and there are not for there are not too there are actually three two on the front and one on the back passenger side. Google images of Jeep Commander sunroof diagram and see it for yourself

Canada 🇨🇦 here...don't forget the other end...it gets knocked off...then you drain into floor and around rocker, before most of the water drains through factory holes...lads double check your rides...keep turning that wrench... one love ❤️

A good idea. Very difficult to get anything in the hole and snake down to unplug. Will try this and report back. Been struggling with this issue for years. Thanks to the commented for the hose size. I think 3/16 was mentioned. would have been nice I'd a small mesh cover over these holes was installed. Also, I've clipped the output plunger but I'm sure the hose still gets buildup. Gonna try a sink type declogger for sure.

I’ve fixed this for a friend twice now. Watching another video helped with this problem. There are two drain holes, awkwardly in the corners. Solution 1 was to use dollar store and allow the degreaser gravity work its way down. Once it seemed to drain, follow with hot water. Generally this works. Solution 2 remove the trim panels to reveal the blue drain hose at the floorboard. Pull out the rubber gasket, pull out the blue tube. At the end of the gasket is a red nozzle. Remove that and then trim the crimped gasket back so the crimp is no longer present. Use the degreaser, followed by hot water and the roof drain should gurgle. Voila!

you know why? because THIS IS NOT THE PROBLEM, now clogged drains dont help but they are not the problem WATER SHOULD NOT GET PAST THE SEAL. REPLACE THE SEAL!!!

This was the very first self-fix job i did my 06' after a hurricane rolled through about 5 yrs ago and left a foot of water inside my jeep. What you did here is not a perm fix. The ONLY perm fix to get to both floor drains where that line leads to and cut the darn things making a larger hole for the water AND dirt particles to escape. Its easy to do. :)

I don't have a air compressor so I bought a compress air bottle from Walmart it work very good . I just remove the things where there the 2 bolts and there is the hose you can remove it and pour the air from there :)

I'm wondering if a sun roof leak could cause water to come into the rear dome light... On one video, it showed that someone changed his rear brake light assembly Part 05116236AF, but never stated if the problem was permanently fixed thereafter.

it's odd that clr would work since rain water, plastic, and rubber tubing typically doesn't have calcium lime or rust, I wonder if drano would work.

There is an additional drain whole on the passanger sode, over time it will become clogged again. I have used the compressed air trick, the cutting the drain hole so it is wider, Im looking for a more permanent solution.

I took my Commander to the dealer to fix the leaking and they charged me $185 and it's still leaking. I'm also now having electrical problems which I'm thinking is caused from the water. I'm told it may be the motherboard? Sounds expensive! I feel they should do a recall on this cuz this is a defect. No $40,000 car should have leaking problems. The dealer says it's not a common problem cuz so many of you are fixing it on your own so they don't think there's a problem. I'm a single lady with poor eyesight so unable to fix on my own. I read here someone saying that it will happen again. This shouldn't be considered as regular maintenance!

My commander is at the dealer right now.the regular service department says they do not fix leaks and want to send it to the collision department. They have not responded with an estimate yet. It dries out and then runs PERFECT. That is the aggravating part. I am seriously considering just putting flex seal on the sun roof and never opening it again. There is a drain plug under the floor mats.When they come loose or get clogged up, it backs up into the interior.

@@julianocampo520 all you have to do is remove the sun visor and all 3 panels that run on the side because that where the hose travels thru I do hope you have small hands cuz is tight trying to put the new hose onto the sunroof drain hole fitting. Just fallow the old hose with the new one before removing the old so you can get the exact length. Takes about half hr to 1hr

Make sure to not drive your commander around if water has leaked in through the tube and settles on the driver side floor pan... I fried my ECU.

Please be honest did this fix it for good? Because I have replaced the tubes multiple times with the exact same pvc. Every year by winter the whole thing starts leaking again due to sut and small debris clogging the hole where the rubber stopper connects to the pvc. Im convinced there is no long term fix. Curious if this worked longer than 3 years? I have a long pipe cleaner to stick it in through each corner of the sunroof opening when ur does get clogged. However, lost my sunroof today on the freeway due to rust.... if you have a Jeep commander good luck

Yea my wife has a 2012 Jeep Patriot and her car has been to the dealership 10 times for this problem and Jeep knows about the problem and does not do anything to fix it be sides blowing out drain lines and resealing sunroof. And the there solution is to Seal up the sunroof completely so it can never be used again.😡 she didn't get a sunroof car not to use it. And go figure they want to sell her a new car, yea right like we can afford to do that and lose out on her car on a trade. There is a class action lawsuit filed against jeep that has not gone anywhere. It's such bs.

I think it comes with the luxury of having a hole in the vehicles roof. I try to keep mine closed. That helps keep out a lot of the things that will clog the drains. I will admit that they could have designed it better but I doubt it's much different with other manufactures.
