Jeep is Leaking Water Inside!

In this video I will be attempting to find the source of a water leak in my wife's 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I will also be removing a stain from the drivers seat from the water leak.

I have the exact same problem on one side of my 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee. My driveway falls away and to the side, which may be why it's only one side? I've cleaned out the drain below the windscreen wipers but this did not solve the problem, so I'm really pleased and grateful to find this video. I also have corrosion 'blooms' both sides under the rubber gasket, which was not removed in this video. They are situated at top front of each door under the more substantial bodywork rubber gasket, which I guess hold dirt and water against this location. Hopefully, the corrosion has not perforated the bodywork, and the sunroof drains are the only issue! An easy check thanks to this video, well easier than repairing bodywork!! I'd never would have worked this out without this video. Thanks so much!! 🙏🏻

If you take the kickpanels off you will see where the draintube exits the vehicle out of a grommet. Remove the grommet and you will see it has flaps on the ends cut them off or use a drill bit to bore the grommet out. What happens is the water and debris get into the moonroof draintubes and the the flaps trap the debris and prevent water from draining properly causing them to back up and spill over the moonroof assembly and run down the A pillars onto the floors

Thanks so much for posting this. I have an 05 and it was leaking in the same way. I was dreading doing exploratory surgery. I blew out the lines and tested with a hose and it is flowing free now. Hopefully the floor boards stay dry now.

Thank you for the video! I will try what you said to do. I had this before and the dealer replaced the passenger side drain hose and the fee was between $400-$500! I will be trying the air hose. FAB Automotive, your video on this solved my exact issue with my 2005 JGC. I tested the driver’s side tube with a little bit of water and it did not drain so I used a few light doses of compressed air and “voila!”, it drained perfectly right where you indicated. I as well checked the passenger side tube and it was OK. And for that, I subscribed!

Thanks for the video! My level blow gun tip could not reach the drain hole in there, so I have used plastic soda drink straw to stick it inside the drain pipe and sticking the gun tip into the straw, it had a resistance of the air flow for a few seconds and then all the water just poured out of the bottom exit. This was on the drivers side where the leaks were happening, there were no leaks on the passenger side and no resistance for the air to flow. After blowing both sides out I tested the drainage with the water bottle and all the water just drained out as it should. Again, thank you for this informative video.

Same thing happened to my 08 grand Cherokee. One day the water was coming through the a piller on driver side. Ended up blowing on of the front speakers. I just traded it in a couple of weeks ago for a 2022 Tacoma. I will miss my Jeep. Got me through a lot of snowy commutes

Daytona 5.7 All cars with sunroofs have water drains. When I wash my cars that have sunroofs I always watch for the water to drain out behind the tire that way I always know the water is draining ok.

2005 Grand Jeep Chero and here in the NC had a heavy rain storm Monday came out from work and it literally was pouring over my driver's side ugh! I bought a mini drain thing from Harbor Freight now I can see from your video (Thanks) where the drain holes are I can clean them, I don't have air compressor so I'll have to try this way.Thanks great video and great explanation. In the end, figured it must be the grommets at the floor panels (that the blue tubes run into). I learned that it’s like the nipple on a baby bottle, and gets really skinny at the very end so can only drip water out slowly in the cleanest of conditions. Pulled out the panels only to find that a previous owner had already snipped the nipple off the grommets!!! I’m at a total loss except to say that these sunroofs just CANNOT handle intense water (& never park on an angle in a hard rain). It just flows over that wall. Will be making good use of the Adam’s! Any recommendations for cleaning rust in the sunroof track? Thanks for all the smarts.

I just got a 08 Commander and it leaks on both sides like this every time it gets wet! I already blew it out and it still happens! I’m in the Deep South, no freezing issues here. It sloshes around in the upper door areas while driving, and comes out from the front edge of the sunroof (which drips onto the steering wheel and then the seat) but mostly the side handles like yours. If I can’t figure it out soon I’m going to have to seal my sunroof closed! Thank you so much for showing us what’s inside all up in there! I didn’t want to go ripping up my new car, but I was afraid it might have been molding and rotting. Now that I know it’s all styrofoam, I can focus on the floor and seats. (I’m going to try the Adam’s) If anyone has any idea what ELSE might still be going on, please post!

I have a ‘10 Commander have you been able to figure anything out to stop the leaks yet? It’s been leaking for months now especially when it rains heavy! All over the dashboard, onto the floor and even out of the light fixtures by the doors. Tried looking for cracks or leaks in the drain tube and also tried to blow it out but nothing seems to stop it and i reallly dont want to have to seal up my sunroof /:

Have you noticed those LED lights are throwing of a lot of radio frequency noise? has it affected your wifi otr garage door openers in the garage area? Have you tried listening to an AM or FM radio in there to see if they affect radio reception?

Thank you sir! No they have not messed with anything. I almost always have my radio on when working in the garage and if I am in the garage the lights are on. I also use WIFI in the Garage and it has never messed up. Garage door openers also work with the lights on. Hope this helps

Great video! I might have missed it, but any update? Anymore leaking months later? I just did this exact thing on my 2006. Passenger side was clogged. Used the air to blow out from the top, then took out the bottom and blew it from that direction. Hopefully it stays that way.

ViperMike S Thanks! If ice gets on the sunroof then melts water still comes in but it can downpour rain on it and it doesn’t leak a bit. I think the drains freeze up and don’t unthaw before the ice on the roof.

I understand the whole idea of water leaking into your Jeep due to leaking, frozen, or even disconnected drain hoses however in order for you to have issues with the drains then that means your sunroof itself would have to be leaking. Basically what I’m saying is that your sunroof drains are a secondary problem & you should focus on the root cause of your problem which would be the sunroof not sealing properly or closing properly. That’s how your sunroof drains were able to get clogged up to begin with…

All sunroofs leak into the tray by design and that’s why they have drains. They are designed that way because they are mounted horizontal which makes it hard to seal so they add drains and a drip tray. If you have a car with a sunroof poor water on the sunroof when closed and after about 10 seconds or less you will have water dripping from behind your front wheels and that’s how they are supposed to to work.

have the same problem with my Commander. I've taken it to the dealer six times for this issue. The last time they replaced the glass, motor and every other component related to the sun roof including all of the head liners etc. It still leaks. I pulled the fuse and plan to silicone it shut for good.

Great video. This perfectly explains the issue I've been having. If that sunroof drain tube has been confirmed clear (and not frozen) what else do you think could be the culprit? After each rain the A pillar leaks, causing stains now. Super frustrating. Any ideas?

I have a 2008 Jeep Liberty and the drain tubes on the sunroof are undersized and do not drain off the water before it gets into the headliner. It's a big problem with jeep liberty. :(

My 2002 wj is leaking down the pillars and dripping onto the floor just like yours was . I have no sunroof. It’s leaking down the very front of the headliner where it meets the windshield and it’s starting to sag. How the heck is mine leaking so bad with no sunroof Exact same spots yours was. I find this very preocular- leaks under the dash on the Jeeps. over most of the years-90's through late 2000's. there is a factory repair procedure called a TSB that is normally done by the dealer at no cost to the owner. this is TSB 24-06-96. TSB stands for Tech Service Bulletin.

I’ve been a mechanic for close to 20 years so I’m very aware of TSB’s and they are not a no cost repair. TSB work is only no cost if the car is still under the factory warranty. With that being said I will look this TSB up tomorrow at work because I am intrigued. Thanks for the info.

FAB Automotive Detailing, great seeing this BUT, I have a Jeep Liberty with no sunroof, noticed today with the heavy rain that I have water coming in where the plastic roof liner end (rear of the car)to where the headliner starts. I can't figure it out. Could it possibly be - someone stole my antenna mast, I had replaced it with a universal mast which didn't make the complete connection and seal. Bought a OEM Mopar mast today. Is it possible that that is where the water can in? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Jahm823 McCartney If the GPS mount isn’t sealed right then yes it can leak. Also your windshield could be leaking in that area also. 3rd option is the door seal isn’t sealing allowing water in.

@@FABAutomotiveDetailing Thanks for your quick response. They did not steal the base of the antenna, just the mast itself which unscrews. The part I bought, did not screw all the way onto it and there was a gap. I thought water might be getting in that way. Its not my windshield no sign of water in the front of the car, just the rear cargo area where the inside roof trim starts (plastic piece). I will have to try to check if the door sear on the back is not properly sealing. I don't even know where to begin as far as how to find the culprit. Thank you again.

Just took apart my 08, and the passenger side sunroof drain hose was completely disconnected. Held on from the factory with 6" of electrical tape, go USA. Jammed the hose back in the reservoir and gave it a shot of JB Weld. She's never, ever coming off again. Problem solved. Dry as a babies bottom.

Ours came from the back seal of the sunroof. Water would come in and run on top of the shade to the headliner and down the A pillars just like you are showing. Nothing to do with the drain tubes.

Ram Garza If you don’t have a sunroof then it would either be the windshield or your door seal. Only thing you can do is take a garden hose with no nozzle on it and run it down the roof towards the windshield. Have someone I side watching to see if it comes inside.

I had fixed the problem it was the windshield right on top of the windshield it had rust connected to the car so I put auto silicone n it fixed it. Later gonna buy a new windshield

I have a 2006 Grand Cherokee with sunroof. All sunroof drains are clear and drain properly. Leak occurs only during rainstorm. The areas of wetness were passenger side carpet, kick panel, and right underside of glove box. Water was travelling down wire harness from the a-pillar and dumping it on these areas( it was also running over the floor light bulb--not good !). I water tested the passenger side area, where leak was . I isolated the lowest point and poured water starting in cowl area- no leak. I then went upwards and poured water along side passenger side window- no leak. I then took windshield mastic strips and sheet plastic from a blister packaging of something I bought, and made an enclosure like a bucket around the passenger side top corner of the windshield. When I filled this " bucket" up with water, I immediately saw water dripping onto the kick panel and floor carpeting. The problem : the roof is spot welded to the a-pillar at the upper passenger side corner near the windshield. On the outside, this seam is covered by sealant from the manufacturer and then the car is painted. Just below the goop of painted sealant was a very small gap. This gap was the way water was coming in and travelling through the inside of the a-pillar. The water came in contact with a small wire harness which allowed the water to dump onto kick panel and carpet. The solution was to apply " windshield and glass sealant " to the gap and other areas that looked suspect. This stuff is great. It is a runny form of silicone sealant that dries pretty hard. No more leaks!! Saved myself from having window removed or body shop investigation ($$$). Cost for the sealant was $ 6 and change.

There has to be drains for the sunroof otherwise everytime it rains the interior would get soaked. Every make and model I have ever worked on has drains.

Teehee, the drains for the sunroof are the biggest culprit for this! Usually when heavy water or snow is on the sunroof or if the drains get clogged with dirt, and other gunk!

Had the same problem on my 2005 back in 2007. Water dripping from the pillars, on my feet and from rooftop sunglasses holder. My dad filled the drain holes with silicone chalk and it never happened again. Now, does anyone have electrical dash going on and off? The air conditioning and heat also shut off as the electrical panel dies and comes back on. If I jiggle or push on the key it comes back on. Had the ignition switch recall done and it still persists. Of course, when I took it back to the dealership it didn’t do it...or they just lied to me cause they don’t know how to fix it 😂

Drea Mac Sounds like you have a ground issue if the ignition is ok!

Planet of the Abes It only leaks when there is ice built up in the drain tubes. Basically when snow sits on top of it and the ambient temps are below freezing the water must freeze in the tubes and block the drains.

I see I’m coming late to this conversation, but I am about to either tarp daily or loose my sunroof if I can’t figure this out. We’ve got another week of heavy rain forecast and I’m loosing my mind! I have wet towels everywhere and it’s starting to smell.

Take that bottom seal off that's under the car the water should drain out.

So it was helpful for finding the drain holes and things to look for... But I don't live where anything has froze...it's only down to 34° at night at the coldest points...so where's my leak at with no clogged drains and no freezen temps...????? x. X

Hahaha....okay I've been looking for a video, I have the same problem. actually jus the driver side handle. Leaks water too jus like yours. But I don't have a sunroof nor I have top cab lights. Dodge 07 ram 1500 single cab.. leaks from the top bolt hole. Same dry every where I can't find... I'm stumped

It could be your windshield. That’s about the only thing that can leak without a sunroof.

Okay, but I'm just asking. How and if it's my windshield when it leaks no where near. But I'll give it another try, cuz I've check and put silicone at the driver side corner and about a foot out across the top. But I'll give it another go, thanks..

Sorry to hear your having issues with the Jeep, but if there is anyone that can fix it looks like your the guy. Do all cars that have sunroofs have drain lines?

Yeah this is the first issue really and I think it was just frozen up! Thanks I appreciate it. Yes all cars with a sunroof have to have drains otherwise they would fill up with water and run over inside. The drains are always with the corners like you saw in this video.

I wish they'd stop with the damn commercials while I'm trying to fix my car on using the video. It gets tiring when you were in the middle of your work and a damn commercial comes on so now you got to sit there and wait until the commercial is over or click on skip. It is annoying.
