@SugarTomAppleRoger the police should protect persecuted people, whether they are in minority groups or not. At the moment, they are not doing that. Now here this. The individual is the ultimate minority group. The police are not protecting individuals if they first have to check to see if the individual belongs to a minority group before delivering protection. So, you are incorrect about what the police should be for.

They probably won't even get a slap on the wrist. I wouldn't be surprised if officiallly the video evidence of the assaults is inadvertently being deleted or becoming inadmissable as evidence. Victims of assault in New Zealand don't get much sympathy in our courts. Many of our judiciary seem to be more suited to be social workers than judges.

What an absolute bloody disgrace this is on the part of NZ police and judiciary. I cannot understand how this has been interpreted as common assault. It was politically motivated, quite likely with pre-meditation of committing indiscriminate violence, by a 20 year old man against an elderly woman who may never fully recover from her injuries. Common assault is pissed bogans outside a pub having a bit of consensual biffo. This isn't that.

I was at the event in Albert Park because I was interested to hear Kellie-Jay speak. The first time I’d heard about her was the day before. There was a fenced off area around the rotunda for her supporters and I initially stood with a group of other people (including lesbians and men) who were all there to hear Kellie-Jay speak We were significantly outnumbered by the people standing outside the fenced area and it soon got out of hand. It was mostly men who were causing the chaos - banging drums, shouting through megaphones, shoving people, pushing placards in our faces etc. They then took down the fence and it was clear the security guards couldn't control the crowd that stormed up and onto the rotunda. I managed to slip out and stood on the perimeter watching. Even then a man in a mask came up and stood in front of me, staring straight into my eyes trying to intimidate me. A couple of police were patrolling but they didn’t do anything, there were quite a lot of police up towards Princes Street but they stayed up there ignoring the shouts of what was now clearly a violent demonstration. My question is - why were there so many men there and why did they display so much hatred and violence towards the women supporting Kellie-Jay??? In my opinion they were not trans otherwise they would have protected the very gender they aspire to be i.e. women. It was intended to disrupt and intimidate a peaceful gathering. Finally, Kellie-Jay is asking for safe spaces for women which we clearly need after what happened to Kellie-Jay and Emily on that day, and yet the media keep on calling her anti-trans, which she isn't. I wrote to the Stuff newspaper and asked them to stop calling her anti-trans but they have ignored me.

Emily, sorry for what happened to you and thank you for speaking up. Sean, thank you for enabling us to hear from Emily. Sean, your questions (about 'have you been kept informed? up to date? informed of what is going on? given the name of the person who committed the crime? etc) imply an expectation that this would normally and naturally happen when/if you are the victim of a violent crime. The opposite is true. Our 'justice' system as it stands is designed to keep victims in the dark; putting their needs and concerns secondary to a primary focus on protecting the rights and privacy of the 'alleged' perpetrator. He is granted a defense, and all the protections of legal provisions, whereas the victim is not represented or defended by anyone. The scant information provided is worse than useless because it never answers the questions that really matter to the victim. The matter is between 'the crown' and the 'defense' - and the innocent victim is merely a 'witness' or prime witness who is not allowed to be 'kept informed' in case it contaminates their evidence. There will be legal folk who defend the reason for this, but the true origin of this unfairness is to protect the criminal and punish the victims via the process. The process is the punishment. That is the reality of our 'justice' system. That is exactly what has played out here, and I guarantee if you speak to any victim of violent crime they will tell you the same. Emily, again, i am sorry for what happened to you on the day, and I am equally sorry that you have had the experience of being confronted by the true reality of our Injustice system. I am glad you are resilient and supported and have your sense of humour back. When I was attacked (also an unprovoked violent crime) my sense of humour was one of the four main things I identified as integral for my recovery recovery - alongside my dignity, a dash of irreverence where appropriate, and a swift physical healing from my injuries. Exactly the same as in UK. I had to take my DV abuser to court and got him convicted. As the victim, I was a witness, not given any legal support. The only thing they give you is your attacker's previous criminal record, and allow you to give evidence from another room in the court by video. Plus my abuser was able to represent himself in order to question me himself. Fortunately my doctor was able to inform the court by letter, of his past attacks on me and my injuries, and the police were on my side and extremely helpful. I will always be grateful to them. They protected me when I moved to another address. He was convicted, then appealed, which would mean me going through it all again, but then dropped out of the process because he knew he had lost. This all took many months. The abusers weaponize the legal process against their victims.

What judges in New Zealand could serve in this country & sit back and allow the Justice system to continue letting these criminals turn the court's into disgraceful shambles of a justice system. Not the first I know how soft the courts have become. Seen for myself in a court room absolutely shocked the people in the room to what he was given as a sentence if you could call it a sentence. Not long after the attacks on the women in Albert Park, as an elderlly person myself, I received details of what constituted elder abuse and how to report elder abuse. Using the Albert Park assaults and police inaction as an example, I officially reported the assaults on women, many of whom appeared to be elderly. The complaint was not acknowledged. I sent a reminder and that has not been acknowledged. Those responsible for investigating elder abuse seem to be linked closely with the NZ Police. Part of my complaint was that the elderly are no longer being told the truth about what is really happening in New Zealand. Mainstream media abuse the elderly every day. The police seem happy for that abuse to continue.

Given that diversion is done in future public interest (namely not sending one-off offenders to prison to be schooled in how to be even worse offenders) a real journalist should whether she approves of his diversion, and the reasons behind her decision. Given the nature of the crime, I don't think diversion should even be on the table and should definitely not be the outcome given the victim of the crime has not accepted it.

I'm embarrassed to admit I voted Labour in the last election. Prior to that I was a Green Party voter and have been an active supporter of human rights (including for the Trans community) for 40 years now. I think Jacinda personally needs to be held responsible for drumming up the unrest here, which resulted in the assault of this poor woman. The defamatory claims Jacinda made publicly about Posie Parker were intentionally made to mislead all NZers and were blatently untrue. I've done plenty of research and I'm yet to find anything equating to hate speech from Ms Parker - but even my own family choose to outright disagree with me. Instead they choose to mindlessly speal the rhetoric of what has become a mob culture generated and fed by our biased media and crooked politicans.

At every single step, NZ Police have demonstrated an utter lack of ability to do the job they are tasked - PAID - to do. What a ridiculous expectation that the victim of an attack by a total stranger, should know who her attacker is, where he lives and - probably - what time he will be at home so they can conveniently arrest him. Even the initial charge was outrageous. The overt institutional capture is atrocious but at least now it has been demonstrated in real time for all the world to see.

Emily I am so sorry for what happened to you. I am so proud of real New Zealand women who are standing up to speak. I had a similar experience - I filed a complaint. I received a call from a very nice officer with a British accident and felt that someone had heard me and was going to get the man who hurt my daughter and I. This was partially captured on video (by a 3rd party) and I supplied the video info in my complaint. I also supplied further video evidence including full frontal face shots of the man. However after hearing nothing further I called a few weeks ago and was told a letter was on the way and I had to wait for that. The letter was received a week later stating "after look at all the available evidence we have not been able to identify the suspect. Unless more information or evidence is found, we can't proceed any further with this case." Seems very similar to what Emily experienced. It is gobsmacking as I grew up Police 10 7 myself and it is common to post a picture in the media when they are searching for a felon - the only thought that can be drawn is that the NZ Police don't view it as a crime to hit a women. He has to get charges as what he did was criminally wrong. I am glad that you are standing strong Emily!!!! You are representing all women in saying that type of activity is not acceptable!!!

If there's a judge on this case, perhaps he or she could ask the thug exactly why he was there, and what is his opinion on transgenderism. He probably wouldn't even have a clue why he was there, and what transgenderism is. I hope Emily gets the justice she deserves, but it doesn't look likely.
