Four levels of scenario. Engagement, Battle, Campaign (this is the level Mark recommends), Strategic (the full war, not recommended). The last two use the Core Rulebook. Campaign scenarios should last 3-5 hours if you know the rules. Engagement's are really quick, like 15 minutes if you know the rules. These are only intended to really be used to learn the rules as each introduces a little scenario with a limited section of the engagement rules to worry about.

Even watching that has terrified me, but I appreciate that it exists and I've heard that the shorter scenarios etc are great.

This is from the days you set up in the basement and left it up for weeks. Got this in the 80's I think. I did start the campaign, actually very interesting, and if I remember, the rules are not that difficult. I did like the Coral Sea campaign and I believe I may have played a Malaya campaign too. This is not for an apartment dweller or someone with cats that like to jump onto things - which, pretty much all cats. I had to use one of those Danish biscuit tins for all the counters and a bunch of plastic baggies. GMT usually sells the boxes separately, so would recommend that. 'Flat Top' is a nice step down from this table breaker. (The original were all paper maps. That, and plexiglass the way to go).

This will just be a collectors item for most people I suspect. I do not see how anyone would have the time to play this game, or try to learn the rules. Still a cool looking game, and amazing amount of content for the money. 30-40 pages of rules is about all I can handle anymore. I don't have the time or desire to deal with anything more complex than that.

Just finished punching and clipping all the counters this weekend. Waiting for Hozan tray to arrive in order to organize and store all these counters. I’m hoping to dive into the engagement scenarios soon. Beautiful production and many thanks to GMT and Mark Herman for making this upgraded version available for the masses.

So far the engagement scenarios have been very helpful and learning the game.

The original Pacific War was by Victory Games 😉 Still got mine in shelves. Solo...not really feasible in fact. Well perhaps some engagement but none of the campaign or battle are. Battle scenario are the best way to enjoy the game that's for sure. Southern map is in fact western map Force displays are also use in battle scenario not only in the campaign if I'm correct The blue terrestrial units are not marine...they are nationalist chinese units. Same for the aircraft on the commonwealth countersheet (the Air Fleet unit were so many to be engaged) Dark red units are soviets units for the Far East Command. They don't get used very often. The light red are communist chinese troops. Yes there is Nationalist chinese under Jian Jeshi and Communist chinese under Mao.

Actually this game has a great campaign game. It's just very involved, long, and complicated.

Pacific War was originally put out by Victory games.

Wow... It's more like a life style or career than a game. I'd never do it the justice it deserves. Collectable at best for me.

Air search charts do seem asymmetric. The Japanese appear to have greater range at the least.

Owned the original by Victory games. Un playable. I'll stick to Empire of the Sun.

I'm really stuck if I should buy this or empire of the sun. I know they are both on a different scale but I'm still not sure what would be best for me.

Do you like CDGs? Do you like a campaign you can play in a day? Do you want a monster to pour over and savour for months?
@consimjim82712 жыл бұрын
@@ThePlayersAid I have never played any CDGs except for Twilight Struggle so I'm not sure. I have to admit I like the look of the map a lot better in empire of the Sun. Since it is coming out on reprint soon I might pick up empire and try that first then if I want a deeper experience I'll try Pacific war.

@@consimjim8271 EotS is a classic at this point. So you really can't go wrong with it. It's still pretty intense as far as wargames go, and there's a great level of decision making and strategic freedom compared to many other ganes.

@@ThePlayersAid The matte finish has been so nice. No reflection, easy to read, and components tend to slide less. I have never understood the appeal of gloss for maps, counters, or rulebooks, unless it has always just been a cost issue?
