I live in Orlando. Couple weeks ago there was a high end car show in Miami. Drive time would have been about 7 hours round trip via 450 miles. Gotta think about gas and tolls also. A roundtrip ticket for Brightline was $95. I took at 5am train down, was at the show before it started, enjoy that, went to to museums while I was in Miami and took the 9:30pm train home. All in all it was an excellent day. I slept on the way down, and watched a movie on my way home. I highly suggest the Brightline to everyone.

I think Brightline will be even more competitive if they build a second Orlando station near the parks (though I know that those plans are on thin ice). Also, it doesn't help that along the new section from West Palm Beach to Cocoa, it rarely hits the 110 mph speed limit and only goes 125 mph in the short section between Cocoa and Orlando. That said, still way better than driving (especially in Florida) and less stressful than most airport chaos.

The main difference between train and plane for distances this short is the price you pay for short notice tickets and frequency options. A plane ticket is pretty cheap if you buy a month or two in advance but if you decided to buy day-of, it's unlikely to be the case. As for a train, you can usually buy a few hours before hand without huge price penalty and there are 28 different departure times to choose from. And finally, the time it takes to get to your final destination. In most circumstances, the train station is centrally located to downtown (I know that isn't the case for Orlando Brightline) but when the extend the line to include an Orlando proper station, that's an additional time savings.

The travel time for Brightline to get to Disney will only improve in the coming years. The next Orlando station will be at the convention center via the Sunshine Corridor which is much closer to the theme parks. There might even be a Disney Springs station on the way to Tampa. As long as the train's time is close enough to the total travel time of flying, it'll be the preffered method of travel. We've seen this countless times in Europe, we've seen this in the Northeast Corridor, and we're seeing it in Florida with Brightline. Brightline West will likely follow the same trend.

The Brightline Orlando station is literally at the airport, could have ended your race there. 😅 To be a bit more serious, as a Miami resident I'm not very inclined to use Brightline due to 1) the cost (much more than driving or a comparable trip in Europe), especially when you have more than 1 person traveling, and 2) the fact that the station is at MCO and not the middle of Orlando proper. All of their other stations are city stations so the Orlando location is both bizarre and very inconvenient.
@beckeb008 ай бұрын
I understand all these points. There are only 4 reasons I can see using this service. 1) You've landed in MIA and need to get to MCO, or vice versa. 2) You're in MCO and you have a good amount of luggage and need to get to the Port of Miami or Port Everglades for a cruise. 3) You have a fear of flying and this is a way better experience than AMTRAK. 4) You really hate dealing with the hassle that is both MIA and MCO.

In this way it should keep plane tickets relatively modest and keep more people off the road during congested hours. I'm a huge proponent of trains ever since living in Japan/traveling in Europe. Brightline consists of Siemens Venture coaches (based off the Austrian counterpart) powered by a Siemens Charger diesel locomotive.

Even in its current state, Brightline really does compete with flying, and it could be so much more. Right now trains are limited to 79mph because of at-grade crossings with streets, which there are over 300 of along the Miami-Orlando route. It would be cost prohibitive to elevate the line above traffic but who knows maybe in this century that could happen. Elevating the lines would allow the trains to run much faster and cut down that travel time by up to an hour. A more immediate fix is to add additional trackage to the main FEC line - I have ridden Brightline before on the full route and round trip, and from Orlando to Miami, there was a small delay around Ft. Lauderdale because a freight train was passing through and our train had to wait on a siding. They really should have built three tracks at the smaller South FL stations - two for Brightline at each end, and a middle one for the odd freight train passing through. Otherwise the train was much less stressful and comfortable than a plane. In Orlando, I could be dropped off at the station near Terminal C and largely avoid the typical airport BS, but the real game changer was that the train got me right in downtown Miami. Now only if Orlando ever builds that extension of their Sunrail commuter train to the airport (and actually run it more frequently and on weekends) then it could be a relatively painless downtown to downtown ride with one transfer.

It's worth noting on the Brightline West project, that it's only going as far as Rancho Cucamonga, a city 40 miles east of LA, where it'll connect with Metrolink, SoCal's regional rail service, that people can transfer to in order to get to/from LA. That's a 74-minute ride, which combined with BLW's anticipated 2 hour 10 minute ride to Las Vegas, plus time to transfer at RC, totals about 3 1/2 hours of travel time from LA's Union Station to BLW's Las Vegas station, and closer to four hours for downtown LA to the Las Vegas Strip using transit/rideshare. Flying will still remain the faster option for that route, though as Liam mentioned here the train will offer a nicer travel experience than an airplane.
@Ven1008 ай бұрын
The higher levels of service on the train will make the longer travel time on the train worth it. Also, eventually the train will make it into LA Union via CAHSR link with the High Desert Corridor.
@ChrisJones-gx7fc8 ай бұрын
@@Ven100 many an online skeptic says that train will never get past the Central Valley. I fortunately am not among them, nor are the majority of Californians. When CAHSR reaches Palmdale does remain unclear though, the sooner that gets funded the sooner it'll happen. My guess is mid-2030s, and ideally their LA-SF service begins by 2039, the centennial year of both LA Union Station and SF's original Transbay Terminal. I could see CAHSR and Brightline West pooling their resources and working together to build the Palmdale-LA segment, in return for BLW's shared use of it. One needs to consider the capacity restrictions of LAUS though, between increased Metrolink service, Amtrak, and CAHSR, even with the run-through tracks which sadly won't include a return loop. Maybe BLW could run a few trains there per day, with the remainder either terminating at Palmdale or continuing to go to RC.

WTH?! What was the actual time for both trips?!

The train is quite nice, but it's sad that you have to catch ubers at either end :(

You don't have to, especially not in Miami.

They did it because it’s race and that was the quickest option, not because it was the only option

Just FYI regarding the luggage, it does fill up. We had pre booked and by the time we got to the station it was totally full. They gave us a credit… which was very difficult to obtain a refund for as international guests who wouldn’t have an opportunity to use the credit at all. It took us 6 weeks to obtain a refund.

Brightline's definitely better as long as it doesn't kill someone on the way.

Great video but it honestly just makes me angry (not at you guys lol). Rick Scott killed off a public high speed rail network across the state his first year in office as governor. And then he goes and invests in the company that runs Brighline. Cancelled a public good for his own selfish personal interests. And then the result is this: a relatively slow high-speed rail that is slower and much more expensive than flying. I would hope they'd be competing for the car travel market (at the higher end, rentals and such) but they're not even beating plane travel market by any metric. It could have been so much better.

Flight prices between MCO-MIA are generally more expensive than Brightline tickets. Those cheaper flights into FLL ala Spirit are only cheaper when you have no carry-ons. You don't even get seat selection on the base ticket.

I never understood these daces, everything is predictable, I mean, you know at the beggining who is going to win. The race part is just editorial skills

I just was on the bright line website and it takes 3hrs 30 min to go from Miami to Orlando. Why does the video make it look like it was a close race ? Am I missing something, since Nick's flight was only 35 minutes
@Ven1007 ай бұрын
Total journey time flying is more than wheels up to wheels down. The flight gate to gate is an hour itself. You can find plenty of MIA-MCO full flight videos on youtube. Then there's the time to get to the airport before departure for security.

But what was the total travel time for each?!?

Can’t believe I live so close to it!!!!!❤❤❤

I do like MCO but yep the satellite terminals is a pain sometimes. thankfully the train might be a good think to reduce the stress of airports and brightline premium have free shuttles or car hire if you wanna go to something within 1/4 mile radius

Also, in October I was able to get a special online for the train of only $59 and the next month only $39 for the special online. Of course it wasn’t the premium one.

How many door panel blew out and how many cars were crushed on train tracks in the making of this video?
