This tutorial explains how to make a simple variation on the V-fold. It can be developed in several different ways and has great sculptural potential.

Honestly, I have found a new hobby within your channel that has inspired me to take on the challenges of bigger ideas and themes that can be created in a a popup book. Thank you so much for uploaded and guiding me through the mechanics. This is really fun. Keep up the good work.

Your book is fantastic, and the videos are also helpful. Question: Is it true that the asymmetrical zig-zag fold can only be made using the proportions shown in the book?
@thepop-upchannel49192 жыл бұрын
Thank you - that's an interesting question. I think the rule in the book is proably a bit limited. My guess is that the two strips that are stuck to the base still need to aim at the same point on the spine (page 55), but the additional zig-zag planes could follow the principal of the asymmetric parallel fold (page 51) A + C = B + D etc... It's worth playing around and experimenting with this - Some time ago I was experimenting Using a piece without any measured creases, sticking the two end sections to the page at wildly different angles and then closing the base firmly to see where the additional creases would be. I got some surprising results - some stable structures, some wobbly - I never took it far enough to be able to work out a theory - but it's an area of pop-up that could be explored!

I was very happy with your answer, Prof. Duncan, thank you so much! I accessed the Amazon website and found that your books are currently unavailable to Brazil, with the exception of Pop-Up Design & Paper Mechanics: 18 Shapes to Make, the one I've already put on my wish list. So while waiting for the video of the lovely little houses, I would like to know in which of your books (that I hope will soon be available here) there is the step by step to learn how to make them. Big hug, Prof. Duncan. Best regards always.
@thepop-upchannel49197 жыл бұрын
"Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics - How to make folding paper sculpture" is the book to get - it is comprehensive and has a template for making the house. It has recently been out of print but should be available again very soon. The short version "Pop-Up Design and Paper Mechanics 18 shapes to make" was produced without consulting me at all - it is not a good book, I would advise you not to get it. You will learn more about pop-up just by watching the videos on You Tube.
@elizabethmaia46807 жыл бұрын
Good morning, Prof. Duncan! I thank you for guidance on choosing the best book for pop-ups. I have already replaced the book on my wish list on Amazon by the one you indicated. Of course, I will watch your videos constantly and repeatedly, until I assimilate the basic teachings of this fascinating art. Thank you very much for your kindness in orienting me in these first steps. Many blessings to you, dear teacher. :)

House is explained in Tutorial 31.

how or where is the roof glued?
@thepop-upchannel49196 ай бұрын
This type of house is explained in tutorial 31. This type is based on a V-Fold and will lie diagonally across the spine. Alternatively a very solid pop-up house can be made using the Box mechanism explained in Tutorial 14 with a roof added using a Parallel fold explained in Tutorial 6.

hi, i'm having trouble finding a theme for the pop up book, obviously i want to make about education, can you give me an idea for a theme that would be suitable? Pls respond
@thepop-upchannel49193 жыл бұрын
Whatever you are personally most interested in, or most passionate about, would probably be the easiest subject to work with. Have a look at the Playlists and see if anything grabs your attention/imagination. Also between Tutorial 39 and Tutorial 42 there are two videos called "Be Amazed" and two videos called "Pioneers of Pop-Up" - these four videos show a wide range of different pop-ups, see if any of them attract, intrigue or inspire you.

Can you build atop this fold, ie that tower type of thing? Do you see what I'm asking?
@thepop-upchannel49195 жыл бұрын
Yes you can build on top of the Zig-zag Fold. You will probably need to make an experimental model just to check where things fold away to when the base is closed.

Could you show how to build and fold Project 3 LUNCH from your book, POP-UP design and paper mechanics. I traced the templates but I'm not sure how to fold and put together the arms (underneath and am I suppose to cut on the straight line of 5 and 6? Thank you
@thepop-upchannel49196 жыл бұрын
The arms are raised using "Counterfolds" - You can see the exact type in Tutorial 22 at 8.25. On the template - cut the unbroken lines on 5 and 6; the dashed lines are Mountain folds (they come towards you); the dotted lines are Valley folds (they go away from you). I hope that's all clear now.

Sir please can you share a tutorial for the same house (double house) its a request 😊
@thepop-upchannel49193 жыл бұрын
The way to make the house is explained in Tutorial 31. To make a double house - start by making a zig-zag fold with all the vertical planes standing at right angles to each other. When you make the houses don't add gluing tabs on the bottom of the walls (which would normally fix the house to the base) - instead glue the houses into the corners of the zig-zag fold.
