To The Post Apocalytic Inventor, The car sounds so much, quieter, just the work you have done on the Volvo so far has impressed me. All that you do in everything that you have repaired, replaced and upgraded has impressed me tremendously. If I had money to donate to your cause I would, but my life is extremely difficult and confusing right now. I have a lot of health problems from 4 herniated disc's in the lower lumbar to cronic liver disease, and to top that off my wife has stage 4 advanced terminal cancer, Twice. Her cancer went away for 8 years and came back. And in addition to that, she has become angry and violent and has moved out of the house to her friends house and is extremely week. Well anyway you get the picture. If I ever needed a mechanical and electrical mentor, I would chose you even though you are more than likely younger than I @ 50 years old. But I appreciate your work that you do, and the presentation that you put together through your video's makes a lot of sense and is easy to follow for the most part. Thank you, Hope you keep it up, Sam from, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Right front wheel with 'loose suspension' could just be a worn out ball joint, the lubrication inside them deteriorates over time. The brake problem is probably a seized caliper or e-brake, if its the caliper it probably needs to be replaced/rebuilt. If you just wanna get it unstuck you can try pulling the caliper off, remove the pads, put the caliper back on (using the rotor to stop the piston from coming all the way out), then get someone to pump the brakes with the brake pedal while you tap on the caliper with a hammer until you get movement. You can also pull up the rubber boot around the piston and spray in a small amount of penetrating lubricant and let it sit. If it's really stuck, you can try compressed air. Oh and good luck with your move and I will most certainly donate as soon as I'm not so broke!

The rear brake that is gripping is propably the piston(s) in the caliper. Could be rust due to a broken seal, but usually if you can push the piston back in manually - and there are no leaks - it should be working again. Don't forget to bleed the brakes if you disconnect the brake lines. You shouldn't have to though. Good video as always.

Years ago converted an old Dell laptop into a picture frame:) I'm currently using an old netbook for data recovery. Its been running ddrescue for months. A neighbour had an external hdd crash. It has pictures of his children. The laptops could also be used as network attached storage servers to store your security camera footage.

In order to synchronize data on HDDs, a RAID controller is recommended (software RAID often produces more problems than anything else). The HDDs will be used internally though, because the only external solution with RAID I can think of would be a NAS. These boxes (i.e. from Synology) are also pretty awesome, you put them in your local network, connected to the router, and there you have the disk storage accessible from any device that's connected to your network. with RAID, there are different modi, you have RAID 0 for speed (it spreads the data over 2 or more drives and thus the data is read/written faster) but no redundancy, RAID 1 for exact mirroring of all the data on 2 or more drives, and RAID 5 which is a combination of both, it works with parity information, so 1 drive is for parity and the others are for the data (which gives you 1.5TB with 4 500GB drives). However, RAID 5 also often produces problems, especially when a drive fails and needs to be replaced, then the controller sometimes doesn't recognize the RAID of the other three drives or something like that. So if you want redundancy, you'll need a RAID 1 with 2 drives of the same size each. And several of them for more storage space, possibly even make a logical volume out of them so that it looks like 1 partition, although it's spread over several drives.

for the backup system build up a NAS (Network Attached Storage ) using FreeNAS (free linux operating system with all tools to build proper NAS built in). It can do software raid, mount external HDD via usb, hot swap features and so on. Just find a motherboard with lots of SATA connections. I have a FreeNAS for over 2 years working everyday even with power losses, never had a problem. I recommend a UPS in line though.

Those hdd's are cool. I double back up important stuff (3 total copies) and those may be good for that. I just install them internally across multiple computers for back ups. I use drive dock for older stuff as archive, stuff I may not want to access much, or maybe never. Drive dock great for initializing and formatting hdd before installing too. Drive dock, as far as I am concerned, the only way to wipe os off a boot drive and reformat. Note, I bet you know, but watchers may not, if you install lots of hard drives internally, this increases the load on power supply, assume 10 watts each at least. They do not turn off as soon as you click off them, they run a long time afterwords for good reason.

I cannot believe that (relatively minor) body rust would cause your car to fail inspection! In my state in the US you must pass an emissions test and some very basic safety tests (headlamps, turn signals, horn, brakes working) but that sort of repair would not be required at all. Some states in the US actually have no vehicle inspections at all.
@John_Ridley
@John_Ridley 8 жыл бұрын
We have no inspection requirement in Michigan, but I wish we did. There's some horrendous, unsafe stuff on the road. I've seen cars actually break in half, have the suspension parts rip loose from the body due to rust, cars modified "for performance" putting out so much unburned gas out the back (running extremely rich) that they make your eyes water for minutes after they pass you.

I strongly suspect your problem with the dragging rear brake on the Volvo is either a partly seized rear caliper or problems with the hand brake shoe set up inside the rear disc, both of these are fairly common on Volvos. If it is the rear caliper having seized it might be possible to free it up enough to pass the inspection but the caliper will be compromised and it will seize again quite rapidly so fitting an exchange caliper or having the existing one rebuilt (I'm not sure if it is still possible to get the necessary seals to rebuild the caliper yourself any more, though as there is often corrosion damage to the bore which needs to be rectified accurately to achieve correct operation DIY repair may not be possible anyway) is likely to be the best option in the long term...

In my experience a NAS is the best way to store data. Get a cheap 6 year old used Motherboard, a power supply and hock up 4 disks. 1 For the system an 3 for a RAID5 The other 3 HDDs will be used as replacement if one disk in the raid fail. You will get ~1Tib disk space from that. In my experienced Debain is the best system for such purpose. Such system can also double as local Web-server for experiments and such things (don't use Apache it's to big and to hard to configure). I build my case from Wood. Fork fine for 15 years now. With Debain you won't get any fancy NAS-GUI or such things but it's stable secure and well structured.

There are external HDD enclosures / docks that you can plug into a computer and they will show the individual HDDs, however, even the ones that accept only 4 HDDs are a little bit expensive and I dont know if the user can change the configuration so that half the HDDs are a backup copy. Another option is a NAS, but I have 0 experience with them

My suggestion for a good storage solution is to use FreeNAS with ZFS. Very easy to set up. I would use the disks in a mirrored configuration or maybe mirrored and striped (Raid 10). Raid 5 or 6 is usually not worth the trouble. You would need a host computer with lots of SATA-ports of course. But you can probably pick one up for almost free if you look around a bit.

They look more like Dell D620 or D630 laptops. The D620 has an infrared port on the left side where the D630 has a firewire port. They run Windows 10 perfectly well despite being Core2Duo laptops. If they have the Nvidia graphics chip, make sure you've updated to the latest bios, the D630s (and presumably D830) laptops had a GPU overheat issues that is helped with newer bioses. If the screens tend to generate red lines or red spots have other graphics glitches, that is a symptom of the issue. The floppy drive you have will fit in the laptop but they also have a small mini usb port on the side that you can use to connect the drive to any computer.

you can use those hard drives (all of them if you wish) with freeNAS which installs on a normal computer allowing you to have drive redundancy with consumer based hardware (ideally you'd get server hardware especially the ecc ram) using a desktop is preferred b/c you have desktop hard drives but you can use the laptops if you get adapters

I clearly would use normal debian... He could do many things in addition relatively easily. As an example, this pc could host a website or do some other helpful stuff if it is running 24/7. But for that 24/7 case, I would really fight the watts of that machine, like using a raspberry pi/old android phone with usb-to-sata converters...

But I think using a regular used, cheap pc is the best solution in respect to his Geiz or let us call it motivation. I share that motivation but alwas try to use a tool as much as possible, in special a pc. I would keep opened as many doors as possible and using a special NAS system would maybe close some or at least near-close some since debian is probably the most common free os and this way, there are best chances for everything.

I think DG thinks differently but my devices always have as much ports as possible. I always could have other usages for something and I always design my products as most general, as possible. I always try to use normed connectors, common or compatible software and so on. That is my philosophy of tools. Of course you cannot sell that debian-raid-idea to anyone like your grandmother. But we are not grandmothers, yet.

If you could get Windows Home Server Version 1 It creates a pool of all your drives. You just tell it which files in the pool you need redundancy of then it creates copies on different drives in the pool. No need for raid cards. It will also automatically backup all of your windows machines daily without your input once set up. It will run on some pretty basic hardware. Only other thing you'd need is a large tower case to hold your drives.

Since you mentioned the addition of the mini catalytic, could you please give a general overview of the emission laws in your area (reduction of fees with the installation of the cat /fee structure/testing requirements(?)). I am from California and this State has traditionally had stricter emission standards that the rest of the country. There was a time when vehicles had either a "49 State" and "California" emission systems. The State initiated a $300 "Welcome to California" emission impact fee on vehicles that were coming from "out of state". The law stayed on the books even after many vehicle manufacturers simplified matters by going to a nationwide smog system. The law was eventually repealed.. not for emission reasons, but because the tax was suppose to be used for smog remediation expenditures and was actually put into the State's general fund. The State had to refund millions of $. I am vaguely aware of Germany's "green zones" and the stickers that are required for the windshield. Additional information would be interesting..

I fiddled with a few RAID solutions on Linux for a few years, but they turned out to be very messy to recover when there was a failure. In the end I just wound up buying a couple of 5T drives and mirroring them on Windows. For ease of use I'd probably go with an external enclosure, CineRAID is cheap, but I can't attest to its durability. One of the problems with hardware RAID is, what if it runs for 4 years then the enclosure fails? Will you be able to drop the drives into some other box and read the data, or is it proprietary? Will you be able to replace the enclosure with a compatible one in 4 years? Also ease of replacing a drive and having it rebuild the redundancy, and ease of expanding (and contracting) the space by adding/removing drives.

not a long time viewer of the channel but i like your stuff on the channel, but i am a long time user of raids of different types. first one thing about usage on a hdd in a raid will only use the space of the smallest drive in it, ex. if you got a 320 500 and a 1tb drive you will only use 320 on all of them so use disks of same size is best but bigger can also be used. raid0 is when you split info between 2 drives and not recommended for backups, raid 1 is a 2 disks or more when a copy is created good to use but you lose lots of space that way, raid5 is 3 drives or more and data is split across them in this way you can loose one drive, raid6 is for 4 drives or more where you can loose 2 drives and still be ok. so it depends of what do you want out of your raid/storage, and how secure do you want it o be. to mention there are diferrent types if cards for raids as well those cards that has help from the operating system for its raid and those that have this in the cards itself(these cards are more epensive), the first one might not work if you change the chipset to another one because of matherboards breaks down which has these features built in. a raid that is written with one card/motherboard might not be readable with stuff from another chipset or manufacturer. my suggestion would be to put an extra drive in your ordinare computer and have it as a storage for recent and good info and put the rest in a computer you only use a storage device thats on when you read or put data on it. what raid to use is a bit of personal preference either r5 or r6 i more lean into r6 out of 8 drives you can loose 2 of them and still be ok, but remember to change a hdd when i gets bad, i have seen people loose company data just becauswe of lazyness not exchanging hdd. you can also read about raid on wiki and other places on the net just duckit or google it

With RAID systems, there are actually some risks and problems. For example, it is enough that a controller fails. Then ALL your data is lost. Similar can happen on a sudden power outage. I would rather do the following: Use these HDDs manually redundant. Put the files on two or thee of them and organize the data yourself. Reliable RAID systems are freaking expensive and not recommended for normal consumers. I backup my files redundant on a 8TB Seagate Archive HDD which is put in an ICY Box docking station, which appears the only one that can handle such big drives! I had a return torture before I got this ICY BOX to get the drive working via USB 3.1 gen1 (aka USB 3.0). Some of those backups are also put on a 2TB external Toshiba HDD which I plan to keep in the home of my parents in the near future.

Have a look at unraid or freenas to create an array of disks. Depending on the spec of your server will tell you which software to use. Freenas uses zfs and requires 1gb EEC ram per gig of storage. Unraid only requires 2gb minimum ram. This topic is quite complex to explain but I would be happy to help u build a system.

Hardware Raid is not terribly difficult to do, assuming you can source a controller cheaply. add on SATA controllers with Raid support are easy enough to set up. plenty of NAS applications that run under Windows and Linux, the latter being free if you have the patience to read and follow documentation. The cost of HDD has gone down predictably so depending on how much data you need to safeguard, having a second hard drive with mirroring, or a mirrored pair in a separate PC with a file share and free backup software can provide adequate protection for a comparatively small sum of money (especially compared with losing valuable work). Another sensible option is cloud backup using a service like Google drive or Mozy. for a small monthly fee all you need is a reasonable Internet connection and you get better redundancy than mere mortals can afford.

I use software called goodsync for syncing files. It is not free but not too expensive. ifthosedrivers were USB you could use that pi as a low power linux file server.

Btw, the main reasons windows is still used today is because the software people like is exclusive to it, and they allready know how to use windows and think mac and linux are too confusing.

Completely random and not on subject here, but I use my multimeter on a regular basis, often times for vehicle repair, and all the sudden it's showing an impedance of 37 ohms. If I press the leads together REALLY hard I can get it down to 8, but it's almost bending the leads. I purchased the meter brand new in 2010, it is a Fluke 179, and the leads are Fluke TL71's. I have not tried replacing the battery, I haven't done that in maybe 4 years or so, is it possible that is causing the issue? Anything else I'm really not sure what would be causing the issue.
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 8 жыл бұрын
1st change the battery, then try another set of leads if you have them, and otherwise polish the pointy ends of the current leads with a cloth, and try one lead at a time using the end to probe inside where the other lead connects, you may have 1 bad lead, so this will all get to he bottom of it.

jusb1066 ***** Thanks for the replies, I actually have a cheaper Uni-T I use for (reeaaally vague) amp readings (clamp type), I took the leads that came with that and I get .2 ohms which is about what I've always got with leads from the Fluke. I'm really gentle with the Fluke leads and they look brand new, I'm kind of surprised that they're doing this. I also clamped the new but shitty leads to especially the old red lead and shook the wire, it can change from 7.8 to 1.0 ohms, so it looks like that lead is going bad. Like I said though, kind of surprised, I would have figured as well constructed as these leads are they would have lasted longer. Sorry for being an idiot, I know I could have Googled what to do, but at least more comments on Post Apocalyptic Inventor's channel will help him a little. The more comments, views, and thumbs up/down a video has the higher it's ranking will be.

Germany has stupid strict car laws, in the US I can drive any car I buy with just the bill off sale and title for a while and no one ever tells you to remove rust or fix this or that, only if the emissions are very bad, but brakes, motor and body damage can be in any shape you want as long as it drives, stops, and doesn't fall apart on the road.

If you are allowed to drive as fast as you want with your rust bucket in a region with 3 times the population on a square mile than the USA, you need some strict rules. It's bad if you flatten someone every 10 miles because the breaks or lights don't work, the tires don't grip or the steering locks up. The death per car is in the USA twice as big as in Germany. And the damage produced and injuries per car are also much higher in the US. Your buying you freedom to drive rust buckets with dead and injured people. So the rules are annoying but useful.

my whole family lives in Europe, I moved to the US in 1988, what im told is that in germany you are not allowed just to register a car that is older then 5 or 10 years old unless you do the vehicle inspection every two years, I own four cars, a 2001 volvo S80, a 1999 Subaru Outback, a 1996 Saab convertible 900s, and a 2002 Nissan Frontier 4x4 pickup truck, all my cars are in excellent condition, I do all my own maintenance like 95% of drivers here in Colorado, Im a Fire Rescue Paramedic in South Metro Fire Dept. so We respond to MVA (motor vehicle accidents ) daily and I can tell you that in my long career I have never responded to a crash that was caused by rusty undercarriage panels, worn out serpentine belts, not synchronized blinkers or rusty exhaust with some holes, the most common no operator fault accidents happen because of blown tires, cruise control being used incorrectly, and also I have seen hoods that fly open on the highway due to operator error upon closure of hood, and yet we dont require any vehicle inspection for any year of vehicle, only exception is if a car is purchased on auction that has been branded as salvaged after a totaling accident, and the auto shop fixes the car then a 5 minute inspection done by our State Troopers is required, they check that all airbags have been replaced and seat belts are working, I seen cars pass with bondo body filler still unpainted, anyway it is the operators responsibility to maintain your vehicle, and we trust our citizens with this just like we trust them with owning guns. and this is why I respectfully disagree with some of Europe's silly strict laws sir.

also we dont have unlimited speed on our highways but most places are 75MPH and that's plenty deadly if someone is for example drunk behind the wheel. We do have some pay tool highways that dont have a posted speed limit but those are rare, and in my opinion there is no reason for anyone to drive faster then 75mph, I drive to work 40 miles each way and I get there in 24 minutes at that speed so its sufficient, Europe cities dont have such long distances to be driven so the Unlimited speed limit on the autobahn isn't necessary in my humble opinion, but still fun if you have a nice new german sports car In that area, I dont think that any normal person such as our video host will push his 1990 volvo at dangerous speeds with or without rusty parts or squeaky belts or even fast blinking turn signals or say a broken horn. anyway that is my humble opinion sir, I wish you a wonderful and safe day.

TAVOR VICEROY VALDOR You and i wouldn't drive that fast, but even if only 1 of 1000 don't think so i'ts enough to ramp up the statistics. You have to "buy" feedom by giving up something else. In this regards Germans and the people in the USA made different decisions. If they where good or bad is hard to say. :-)

what are those wipers on the headlights for and how do they activate?
@michaeltempsch5282
@michaeltempsch5282 8 жыл бұрын
To clean the lights of spray/slush/snow etc. Combines with washer nozzles. Not familiar with the Volvo in particular, but they're commonly activated by pushing the wiper stalk forward (where pulling it back usually activates the windscreen washers) My current car hasn't got headlight wipers, only high pressure washer nozzles that activate automatically along with the windscreen washers iff the headlights are turned on. The wipers are more uncommon on newer cars.

They are for wiping headlights, obviously. :D Volvo is designed in Sweden where the weather is pretty snowy or dirty for good part of the year and then wipers for headlights makes perfect sense.

To these hdds: I do not know how much space you need. Please tell me, what sizes there are with their amounts and, yes, the space you need in total. I also try to spend as few money as possible, like always. I would get an old pc from about ~2004, better ~2008 that has SATA connectors on the mainboard. We will see if you actually need all 9 hdds because I would rather use just a few in order to help your electric bill. And in addition, you have spare drives for the case one disk of your array breaks. Then, I would run debian on that pc and create a raid of some kind. You can then access the storage via network, possibly gigabit. Grüße von Person Y aus Tostedt

I use unraid - it would be a great way to tie together all those hard drives into a good redundant array. Yes, it costs some money, but not much at all for what it does. There is a free option to try out. Have a look and see lime-technology.com/ - I have had my 13Tb array up for over 7 years now (of course it has grown to that, it didn't start at 13!). If a drive dies, you just replace it and keep on going, no data loss...
