That's my favorite flower! The cutest thing I ever saw was a little blonde blue eyed 4 year old boy standing on my porch holding a handful of giant black eyed Suzies with stems longer than he was tall. He had picked them for me because he knew they were my favorites. I'll carry that memory in my heart as long as I live, but this song brings it to life again.

Thank you so much for sharing this. My Grandma played a Banjo just like this. She sang us this song all the time when we were little. I still have her banjo. It’s over 100 years old now. Grandma was from North Carolina. I’m a granny myself now & I still play for my boys when they come home. Thank you again for sharing

I remember the old Post Office at Topton. It was just below the crest of the mountain on the Andrews side. It was a little country store with the Post Office in it. My cousin Billy drove the mail from Murphy to Asheville and back. I rode with him a few times. I could ride in the cab of the truck but wasn't allowed in the back or in the back of the post office. We stopped at Andrews, Topton, Bryson City, Sylva, Balsam, Hazelwood, Waynesville, Clyde, Canton, Candler and Asheville then stopped at them all again on the way back. Billy had keys to all the back doors if they were closed. That was a long day!

ya the clawhammer technique sure is different from any other string playin`. It takes practice to get it right. Like Travis-pickin` it takes some getting used to but when you have it you will sound like a pro.

"Black eyed Susie"🎤🎶 lol This man is the living essence of tradition. Love the banjo. You guys need to get some Appalachian clog dancing going on, get down to that bluegrass you know. I need to explore more bluegrass music as a guitarist myself, it's an essential style to learn, and a lot of those fancy guitar licks come from the banjo. Jerry Reed for example. But guys like Sonny are the last of the mohicans and there is lots to learn from these men, especially in the roots sense. They are living artifacts of history (no offense Sonny). Anyways I digress.. rambling, love this stuff.

Black eyed Susie went to town All she wore was a gingham gown Hey Black eyed Susie Ho Black eyed Susie Hey Black eyed Susie Jane. I may get drunk I may get woozy But I’m comin’ home to Black eyed Susie Black eyed Susie’s long and tall Sleeps in the kitchen with her feet in the hall Hey old man I want your daughter To chop my wood and carry my water Black eyed Susie lives in a holler She won’t come and I won’t call her All I want in this creation Pretty little wife on a big plantation. All I need to make me happy Two little boys to call me Pappy. One name Sop and the other name Gravy One sop it up and the other gonna save it. Up Red Oak and down salt water Some old man gonna lose his daughter. Black eyed Susie went huckleberry pickin’ Came home late and took a lickin’. Love my wife and love my baby Love my biscuits sopped in gravy. Goin’ back home with a pocket full of money Somebody there to call me honey.
