I love primeagen for introducing me to vim. Also for teaching me how to config vim (typecraft helped a lot too)

Similar to his own story, watching him fly around with vim was the push I needed to get into it.

My problem now that I'm retired I don't need it often enough to remember what I learn, so I have to learn the same stuff every time. I just find it easier to stick with Micro.

Started using vim/nvim recently and I can see the benefits. I look at it this way, if you’re running a development setup on a laptop or desktop.. you know your going to need to run commands in the terminal for a few things, then why not just code from within that same terminal. My nvim setup is simple , do have a tree and split panel, and a few other additions.. but nothing to crazy. Plus just ordered a Linux computer, always wanted one. I agree with Prime on hating windows.. I use Macs mostly for the past 15 years. Also I have nvim running on my AWS setups.. so convenient when logging in through SSH.

I'm working on learning vim at the moment, and I know just enough to do alright, but I think what would help me is if someone broke up the pile of commands/motions in to groups and went "learn this group first, once you have that down, move on to this group, then this group, etc." Right now I have this big 3 page cheat sheet and it's just overwhelming.

prime has a video tutorial series that kinda does this

Personally I had a project I was actively working on when I switched to vim and basically just found parts of the workflow that were really tedious. After doing something tedious 10 times, I would research a better way to do it. The motions stick a lot better in your head when they are a solutions to problems you have already identified.

I don't think that's a useful way to learn. That's like learning a language by memorising phrases, which I don't think has ever worked for anyone IRL. Just memorise the minimum amount of motions needed at first (which for most people is just hjkl{}0bweft%/ 90% of the time). After that, just whenever something is annoying you, look up the better way to do it (there virtually always is).

Ive attempted to stick with vim and neovim, the worst part is setting up formatters, linters, auto complete, hovering to see definitions of functions, list goes on..

Does your brain work at the speed of Notepad? Use Notepad. Is your brain faster than Neovim? Yes, but at least your fingers get a break.
