Interesting and enlightening interview. I have immense respect for Shourie. But at the end of it I still don’t understand how or why Arun Shourie became a liberal champion and fell out with Modi. Modi hasn’t changed since the Gujarat days when Arun Shourie was rooting for his elevation to PM and praising the Gujarat model. If you call Modi communal now, he was the same then. If you call him autocratic now, he was the same then. If you call him anti-media now, he was the same then.
@mrgyani2 жыл бұрын
A lot of ppl were fooled in 2014, me included. Ppl were dissatisfied with congress and wanted change, even a bit of right shift. I remember Raghav Bahl too did a conference called 'think right'. Shourie has always been center right. And Modi came with an agenda/ narrative of development and harmony. He bared his fangs only recently.. And that too because he realized economy isn't working, so he will have to turn the communal pot up.
@yogiadityanath35632 жыл бұрын
@@mrgyani See the problem is everyone nowadays says that in 2014 they started as centre right and then moved left because of Modi and his policies. But what they refuse to acknowledge is that they were economic centre-right in 2014 and political left today. Which isn't much of any shift; economic policies and political policies don't go hand-in-hand with either right or left wing in India. For instance, the RSS is political right but is economic far-left. I just wish people would elaborate on this difference. But the shift I do see are yesterwhile capitalists suddenly turning into communists when it comes to the farm laws solely because of a hatred of Modi. And a bunch of media houses championing them along in this attempt at keeping the farmers poorer, non-enterprenuerial and molly-coddled with cheap MSPs.

@zaurukraus92962 жыл бұрын
@@mrgyani agreed. The whole "ab ki baar, m**i sarkaar" thing was on everyone's lips. People were hopeful that the govt will be truly transformed. I remember how there was almost no communal/religious angle in 2014, and everyone was enthusiastic about the change for the sake of development. Everyone supported m**i thinking that he will bring progress and prosperity. What we got was economic blunders- bjp became the richest party while the Indian GDP collapsed... No wonder the religious temperature was turned higher in 2017 to compensate, and the heat is getting turned up and up with further economic loss.

More than anything else, I like Mr Shourie for his spirit, his emphasis on doing the hard work, like reading documents, e.t.c. But, i think he is wrong about BJP, RSS. The beauty of Hinduism as a great personal spiritual journey didn't deter Ghori, Ghazni, e.t.c. If we want any chance to survive and be in a position to remember the traditions of our forefathers, we need an open-eyed definition of the 'other'. And it doesn't have to be based on falsehoods too. The real facts of the 1000 year rule of the 'other' in India provide enough material. The inward spiritual journey to find God doesn't cut it. If you are being slaughtered because of your religion, then trying to organize on the basis of religion is a required pursuit.

Wow by time stamp 2:47 I was already loving the two learned gentlemen displaying such AUTHENTIC affection (mutual admiration as Arun Shourie ji puts it) for each other. I am willing to learn from this interview ... but GENUINE mutual affection of THIS level between ANY humans virtually shows me what paradise might be like (if such a thing as paradise exists: I really don't know if any religious view of afterlife is true or not, let me say this emphatically - I am aware that Arun Shourie ji would be having a better understanding of issues related to after life, he is pretty spiritual ... and has the beauty of humour to the point of mentioning the part of us humans chasing chowk**ri ). To me (I say it with humility of the lowest of low qualified humans ... as I actually am a nobody ) humans displaying genuine adult-yet-childish affection with wit, lots of genuine smiles, occasional guffaws of belly laughter and INDEPENDENT THINKING OF EACH HUMAN KEPT ALIVE ... is THE ONLY PARADISE I WOULD EVER FIND ACCEPTABLE (the incentives of sensual pleasure would be welcome but I find them barely pleasures when compared with humans being affectionate, witty, caring, adult-childish, ... for no ulterior motive). Need not say that Shekhar ji and Arun ji created paradise in 2:47 minutes ... who am I to pray for them ... Gods showered flowers upon them. P.S. edited this out of my vanity ... or else why would one write a long comment and then go on to revist it after a single "like". Sakyamuni is so so true when he says he never me a sentient creature who loves anything more than itself. May we all grow aware till all layers of onion are peeled off. ;-)

Disclaimer: With malice to none. The Print is my favorite and the only channel I watch/ read for some of its offerings. As SG himself says, politics is an essential ingredient, as salt in food, in a democracy. But the all pervasive media is a more essential portion of life ( food, entertainment, work, play, religion, caste etc. etc.) in a democracy where free press and free speech is incumbent. The end result is that media and politics feed on each other and the people just take the left overs. Tailpiece: In a democracy, the politicians will use the fissures in society ( which precedes modern politics by many centuries) to create vote banks (religion, caste, creed, language, parochialism etc.. etc..). So do not except them to solve societal problems.By sheer logic, it is not even a probability.The media creates the din.

Well , most viewers are in awe of Shouri so the comments are in line of that view .But unfortunately we don't see the Journalists form their own opinion the way their lean . Shouri is no exception! He has firm views how things should be ,what is Hinduism, what is liberal, how a politician should act or behave .So he despise them all . Again unfortunately we see it as braveness ,standing up to the government!

Shekhar Ji, you have to write a similar book. Indians in general and aspiring journos, in particular, will be immensely benefited. I cannot agree more with what AS said about the deterioration of the quality of people in the last 30-40 yrs in India. I have always maintained that people in India in general were of better quality (in terms of integrity, discipline, and socially responsible) in 1950-70s compared to 1980-2020s. Our society has undergone degradation morally even though we have been advancing technologically, and monetarily.
