Why does Shekhar Gupta a very senior editor keep interrupting Shamika Ravi when some issues are uncomfortable for Mr Gupta, not done. However one can surmise the following after hearing this interview : 1. The decline of Hindus is disturbing and can lead to social upheavals some of which India is already seeing and could get worse 2. Increase in the largest minority group in India alongwith lower literacy rate in this community is another area of very serious concern again a destabilizing factor Overall the interviewer was sub par and he seemed to be deeply uncomfortable that the Hindu population as a percentage of population is falling - WHY? Let the media and senior editors be mature enough to handle such topics then only will they do justice to their profession and more importantly viewers who spend time to watch such interview only to be disappointed by agenda driven media, journalists and in this case senior editors.

Shekhar ji fertility rate per woman is a clever way of masking the reality. Fertility rate should be per couple and not just woman. If we calculate the Annual Change in Population based on the first and last numbers, we get an average (-)0.125% growth per year for Hindus and an average (+)0.560% annual growth for Muslims. Based on these numbers and adding all other minorities under "others" we are likely to have 69.37% Hindus, 19.52% Muslims and 11.12% Others in the year 2100. The Muslim population could overtake Hindus at 38.83% to become 39.10% in the year 2400. All this is based on current data where Muslim birth rates were well above Hindu birth rates. Of course, this situation has changed quite a bit over the last 3 decades. As the author said, there is a dire need to study this data on a state level too.

A few discrepancies in the dataset of the paper: 1. Census 2011 figures reveal Hindu % to be 79.8% however here it is 78.06%. 2. Census 2011 figures reveal that % of Muslims was at 14.23% however here it has DECLINED to 14.09% 3. Between 2001 and 2011, % of Sikhs in Punjab DECLINED by 2% points (59.9 to 57.7%) however here it is showing an INCREASE.

The purpose, the timing and the analysis is dubious. RCS -Dem data is a compilation of various sources, extrapolations and interpolations. For India, the data ends with 2011 census and there is no verifiable data since then. But leaving that aside, it would be obvious to anyone except Shekhar Gupta that the minorities were not under any threat before 2014, the period of analysis. Ravi is being disingenuous to use the data from before the Modi government to claim everything is wonderful for the minorities today. Shekhar is of course is totally solid out.

I doubt Christian population figures. I see more than 30% in all villages in AP. However they are not reflected as Christian because of reservation issue.

What "matter of pride", it may be your opinion not everyone. We are very concerned, its all good to talk about other religions giving them services, more treatment but why in the expense of us, give the extras to them however u like. All these people calling us majorities, but what is a majority if its just numbers well the data is showing the trend, and if u are talking about rewards for being majorities, i mean where are they. All these are like forcing us to become minorities to get all those perks!
