It's funny seeing these missions saved for the end. Millionaire Claude decides he'd do some grunt work for some random serial killer. I feel cannonically these would take place very early on in the game. When Claude has finished one of Joeys jobs he walks across the street and hears a payphone ringing. Knowing the nature of random ringing payphones Claude knows it's extra work and decides to take the opportunity at the time he needed it.

The names of the missions are actually a play on the Peter Greenaway film, “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.” The film has a scene where “The Lover” is tortured to death by “The Thief” and “The Wife” has “The Cook” cook “The Lover.” She then forces “The Thief” at gunpoint to take a bite of the cooked “The Lover.” “The Thief” reluctantly does it, but he throws up. “The Wife” then calls him a cannibal and shoots him in the head. Obviously, the fact that Marty is putting these people in his dog food has some relevance to the film.

I feel the whole point of Martys missions was to not underestimate the other man's greed. Every character had a sensation for greed as we see with Marty himself who takes greed to the extreme and kills those who he believes wronged him financially. the bank manager bumping up his loan payments to get more out of him, the 2 thieves not satisfied with what they stolen and wanted a cut, the wife spending all of Martys money while waiting for the next payday and the loan shark demanding his money back. It's only after he meets Carl he breaks his own rule by underestimating Carl's desire to take over his business and mocks him "you've had your chance" insinuating that he knew what Marty was doing and the only person who could have told him was his wife since she was cheating with Carl.

Marty does not really exhibit the signs of being a serial killer. He fits perfectly into the spree killer category though.
@Teknanam3 жыл бұрын
A spree killer is someone who kills two or more victims in a short time. FBI says the general definition of "spree killer" is a person (or more than one person) who commits two or more murders without a cooling-off period; the lack of a cooling-off period marks the difference between a spree killer and a serial killer. But the hard to define nature of what a "cooling off period" or "a short time" has lead to the category having no real value to law enforcement compared to serial killer and mass killer. I can see an argument for both serial killer and spree killer.
@joshuagriffith91913 жыл бұрын
@@Teknanam Reading past the first paragraph of Wikipedia, Ronald M. Holmes and Stephen T. Holmes define spree murder as "the killing of three or more people within a 30-day period" and add that killing sprees are "usually accompanied by the commission of another felony." This describes Marty Chonks in almost perfect detail. He kills 4 people in a short amount of time with insurance fraud as the other felony. As opposed to “Ronald and Stephen Holmes define serial murder as "the killing of three or more people over a period of more than 30 days, with a significant cooling-off period between the killings."” With that said, there is a debate between criminologists as to how long the cool off period is and the difference between now the killers choose their victims. If it is a subject that interests you, the Devil in the White City and the Stranger Beside Me are fantastic true crime books about serial killers. As well as Serial Murderer quoted in the Wikipedia article if you are looking a purely academic look at the subject.
@Teknanam3 жыл бұрын
@@joshuagriffith9191 But that is again one definition on terms that has seen much debate. You're referencing 2 names, but more than those 2 people have debated what defines a serial killer vs. a spree killer and with that, more definitions than the one you mentioned. The definitions you've brought up between serial and spree are only separated by whether the killings happened within 30 days or not, but I wouldn't be surprised if not everyone would agree to a seemingly arbitrary number. This is why the FBI went with such a simple definition that didn't address anything like temporal or motive elements, but even they are one just one group and everyone may not agree to disregarding those elements. In the end, I guess it'd be more accurate to say Marty fits certain definitions of Serial killer and spree killer.
@joshuagriffith91913 жыл бұрын
@@Teknanam First, I agree that there is overlap between spree killer and serial killer definitions. There are key difference such as the 30 days which is not an arbitrary number as much as one agreed upon by researcher of criminal justice and the psychological (and typically sexual) gratifications that serial killers get from their likes unlike most spree killers. This is what leads me to say Marty is a spree killer. Second, I agree more than two people have debated this subject. When citing a source it is better to put a name to the source than just an generalized Wikipedia paragraph with no reference cited. I also referenced three books that give in depth profiles of serial killers and spree killers on top of the two names. In closing, thank you for spurring me to think critically on the subject. Just like when discussion other physiological issues, there is no clear cut answer. It’s an idea of percentages and sometimes opinions. So… since there is no real way to end this debate. Have a good New Years.
